Sam Wilson and the Lesbian Bible Killers

Sam Wilson is the Vice President of the Sussex County Council and is pretty het up over the defeat of the Bible Study course at Cape Henlopen School District. Het up enough to have taken to the airwaves (WGMD Delaware 105.9 – don’t know who this host is) to tell listeners far and wide that he was plenty disturbed over the 3-3 vote. According to him, at least one of the Cape Henlopen Board members is a *gasp* — lesbian! And (according to Wilson) lesbians are “not strong on the bible”. He seems to think that said lesbian(s) had too much influence over the vote. But thank goodness there is western Sussex to hold strong on the bible and morals, because I think that eastern Sussex doesn’t have time to demand that their neighbors “Show Us Your Bibles!” — since they are too busy tending to their own lives (and getting reservations to all of the good restaurants). Take a listen (approx 4 minutes):

Sam Wilson on the Radio

Really? This is a public official who gets his sour grapes on by spinning up a lesbian conspiracy theory. This is a REPUBLICAN public official spinning up a conspiracy theory, so I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. But if this kind of thing is the face of the GOP rebuilding in Delaware, well, all I can say is you better be sure there is enough popcorn for ALL of us. I don’t care if it *is* Sussex County, you won’t be doing much building with your public officials leaning in with this kind of bigotry.

Let’s Check On That Republican Outreach

Okay… this is confusing.  Rick Chick?  Peeps?

Republican Michigan Governor Rick Snyder brought along stickers that said “I’m A Rick Chick” to the annual Mackinac Policy Conference in his home state yesterday. The stickers included a pun based on the popular chick-shaped “Peeps” marshmallow candies.

Have a great weekend. Guess I’ll hang out with my chick peeps!

I’m Calling It For Santorum

Know why?  Because we’ve seen this scene before.  My guess is that Santorum will be the 2016 Republican nominee.  He was first runner-up in 2012, so… it’s his turn.  Rand Paul will take over his father’s role and act as spoiler.  His Libertarian supporters will be rabid, as usual, and the Evangelical community won’t trust him.  Meanwhile, the “business and money” side of the GOP will once again run a Jon Huntsman and lose quickly.

Which means… the nomination is Santorum’s.  And I think it will be an easy win, mainly due to the make-up of the Republican primary voter.  These voters are incapable of seeing past a primary to the general, and when you consider how many moderate Republicans have left the party then you understand who will pick the nominee.

The Republican’s base motto of “He’s not Conservative Enough” will finally be tested.  And I’ll remind you that while most Americans were appalled by Christine O’Donnell, Sharon Angle, Richard Mourdock, etc., Conservatives weren’t, and still aren’t, appalled.  In Conservative Land, these candidates’ losses were the fault of RINOs.  It wasn’t the messenger.  It wasn’t the message.  It was an act of betrayal.  And they have spent the last 4 years purging the traitors.  Which leaves us with… the Republican Primary Voter.

So, yeah… I’m calling it for Santorum.

Republicans Love Living In Their Bubble

Steve Benen looks at the latest polls, and – surprise! – Americans still aren’t buying what Republicans are selling.

This poll suggests the GOP isn’t just wrong, its understanding of public attitudes is the exact opposite of reality. The public is prepared to hold Republicans responsible for this self-inflicted wound that will undermine the economy, the military, and public needs. The one thing the GOP is counting on — avoiding blame at all costs — is already failing miserably.

Indeed, looking ahead, voters were asked, “What should be the focus of steps to reduce the deficit?” A whopping 76% majority said there should be a combination of spending cuts and new revenue. Only 19% of the public — fewer than one in five — agrees with the Republicans cuts-only approach. Given the number of Americans who self-identify as members of the GOP, this suggests the Republican Party has failed to even persuade some of its own voters.

Wait, it gets even worse for Republicans (and better for Democrats).

On specific issues, the same poll found that Americans side with President Obama over the GOP on who has the better approach to reducing the deficit, who’s right on reducing gun violence, who has the better plan to deal with immigration, and by a huge margin, who’s better on the climate crisis.

What’s the good news for Republicans in these new national polls? There is no good news for Republicans in these new national polls.

Meanwhile, the Koch brothers are scratching their heads in confusion.

The massive amount of outside political spending unleashed by Citizens United did not, as feared, make it easier for rich people to buy an election. Instead, it showed that rich people are pretty dumb about politics. Take the billionaire businessmen Charles and David Koch who are spending their 2013 figuring out why they the money they spent in 2012 was such a waste. They have already fired most of their 100 staffers at Americans for Prosperity, and they’re now conducting an audit.

Like American Crossroads and the Republican National Committee, the Koch brothers are trying to figure out why they couldn’t beat President Obama — and several Democratic Senate candidates in red states. The Kochs have delayed their twice-a-year meetings with big conservative donors until they’ve finished their audit, Politico’s Kenneth P. Vogel reports. The results of the audit will be presented at an April seminar, Vogel writes, adding, “Early indications suggest that they’ll continue playing in politics but will tweak their approach to reflect 2012 lessons.”

First, I love the fact that they wasted sooooo much of their money.  Second, they simply refuse to see what everyone who didn’t buy into skewed polls saw – Republican policies are terrible.  Hey, when your egos insist you surround yourself with people telling you what you want to hear and skewing polls in order to make you feel better you end up with the 2012 election.  When your answer to that loss is to substitute a Hispanic for Mitt Romney and have him put forth the exact same policies then you’ve learned nothing – and all the money in the world won’t change that.

Also… only “22% of Americans, nearly a record low, consider themselves Republicans.”

You’re welcome.

It’s True! People Are Losing Their 2nd Amendment Right To Bear Arms

But it isn’t President Obama who’s taking away people’s 2nd Amendment rights:

A gun shop in Arizona has a clear message to would-be customers who happened to vote for President Barack Obama: take your business elsewhere.

The Southwest Shooting Authority in Pinetop, Ariz. took out an advertisement last week in the local newspaper, the White Mountain Independent, that spelled out the store’s new policy in explicit terms.

“If you voted for Barack Obama your business is not welcome at Southwest Shooting Authority,” the ad reads. “You have proven that you are not responsible enough to own a firearm.”

And… there you go.  A commenter over at TPM said, “You can’t spell crazy without AZ.”

Conservatives Expand Their Base With People Who Share Their Values

Rob Tornoe has an excellent post and cartoon up calling out Papa John.  I point to Rob’s post because what I’m about to link to is the Conservative flip side.

You see, NOM (National Organization for Marriage) is organizing a boycott against Starbucks for the company’s support of gay marriage.  Oh… you haven’t heard about it?  Perhaps that’s because you live in the wrong place.

The Colorado Independent reports that officials from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) have vowed to make Starbucks (along with other companies that support same-sex marriage) pay a “price” in Middle Eastern countries that are hostile to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.

[…]

“So for example, in Qatar, in the Middle East, we’ve begun working to make sure that there’s some price to be paid for this,” Brian Brown says in audio recording of the conference call, which can heard on the Independent’s website. “These are not countries that look kindly on same-sex marriage. And this is where Starbucks wants to expand, as well as India. So we have done some of this; we’ve got to do a lot more.”

And Conservatives actually became upset when people referred to them as the American Taliban?

NOM knows a boycott in the United States won’t work, so they had to leave the U.S.A. to find people who share their values.  Amazing.

Apparently This is How Low the Bar Is Set for Republicans

The 31 Worst People On the Planet Just go over there and see what passes for acceptable commentary by these folks on Twitter in response to the President’s win on Tuesday. Just click on the link — I won’t replicate any of that here.

The only good news is that Buzzfeed has preserved these (and the user names) forever.

And how about this one? She doesn’t think that what she did was wrong. Got her fired from the local Cold Stone, though. And a visit from the local Secret Service.

As an aside, Mitt Romney is losing Facebook friends at a rate of 847 per hour. Perhaps Eric Dondero started a worthy trend.

The Geoengineering of Hurricane Sandy

So has anyone heard this story? This seems to be another giant bit of tinfoil hat being spread around the wingnut universe — namely that President Obama is somehow responsible for the geoengineering of Hurricane Sandy. In order to disrupt election coverage, to interfere with voting, to skew the polls. I’ve only been able to manage bits and pieces of this lunacy, but somehow chemtrails are involved. Chemtrails!

This guy has taken the time to show you some of the evolution of Sandy, helpfully pointing out where the abnormal aerosols are that are somehow powering this thing. No explanation of how released aerosoled material maintains its movement AGAINST hurricane strength winds. He does note, however, that this might be ripe for lawsuits by the people hit by this storm (approx. 2 minutes long):

It looks like Alex Jones over at InfoWars is a major vector of this lunacy. I can only hope that he is telling his viewers that Democrats vote on November 6 and InfoWars consumers vote on November 7.

Tell us in the comments what you’ve been hearing about this crazyness. A prize for whoever comes up with the best connection between this and Agenda 21.

Here We Go Again

Expect more of this:

Someone vandalized an Obama campaign building in Des Moines by spray painting the words “Muslim Lier” on a large banner, police said.

The word “liar” was misspelled on the sign, officers said.

Sigh.

And we know it’s only going to get worse from the functional illiterate group.  Everybody… buckle up.

The Party That Cried Wolf

So I read this today

American Crossroads and its affiliate Crossroads GPS are going up today with their biggest paid media push so far in the 2012 cycle, with a $16 million one-week buy on TV and radio in eight presidential battlegrounds and four Senate contests, POLITICO has learned.

On the presidential level, American Crossroads will spend $11 million on a spot called “Actually Happened,” which focuses on the impact that President Obama said the stimulus would have on the unemployment rate. The spot features a man using charts and graphics to show where the president said unemployment would be around now, under 5.5 percent, compared to where it is, at 8.1 percent.

And, after reading the article, all I can manage is a shrug.  Four years ago I would have been blogging furiously about this. ( I would also gleefully be pointing out that the graph in this ad showing unemployment figures was moving downward.)  I would have been calling everyone to arms.  And while I’m not advocating for complacency – because GOTV efforts and countering these ads is critically, vitally important – I will point out that after the last four years of Republican hysteria over everything Obama I’m kinda numb to it.  And I’m starting to think the American people are as well.

For four years we’ve heard Republicans screaming hysterically about how the ACA would create Death Panels and Kill Grandmom.  We’ve heard from the Birthers (and are still hearing from them) and watched as they launched investigations and went to court trying to oust the Kenyan Usurper.  We listened as Reverend Wright morphed into “foreign” and “not American” to “Food Stamp President” to a thousand more ways to make Obama the scary “other.”  We have heard lies about Obama raising taxes; lies about ending work requirements for welfare, lies about giving black people cell phones.  We’ve even heard that Obama’s father isn’t his real father.  There are many more examples, but I don’t have all year to write this post!

And it’s these lies combined with a unprecedented level of sustained hysteria that has me feeling numb.  No one can take this constant outrage seriously.  There’s simply too much.  If everything is an outrage, then nothing is.  And that’s a problem.  When you cry wolf all the flippin’ time people stop listening… They also stop believing you.

Imagine If…

… Republicans embraced the anti-vaccine idiotic message:

I’m glad that (apart from Donald Trump) the anti-vaccine movement isn’t really linked to the right. Can you imagine if vaccine skepticism were seized on by the right-wing noise machine? It would spread like wildfire. A third of Americans simply wouldn’t vaccinate their children, insisting that the health effects of vaccination are just a “theory.” Every Republican in Congress would have to sign an anti-vaccine pledge. There’d be movements to make vaccines illegal in the red states, and dispensers of vaccines would be defunded in those states, and their offices would be shut down. Right-wing billionaires would bankroll documentaries linking vaccination to Hitler and eugenicism, and the Fox/talk radio crazies would flock to those documentaries, which would break box-office records. Half the books on the bestseller list would have covers depicting Democratic politicians as Dr. Mengele.

So… I guess there’s a silver lining?
