Can We Learn From This?

Can We Learn From This?

There’s been an interesting evolution in the DL comment section. I wanted to give my take on it.

Whenever the subjects of race, women’s issues, religion (mostly concerning Muslims), LGBT, etc. come up and white privilege is pointed out we hear white people quickly saying “not all white people” and then sharing their reasons as to why they are the exceptions to whatever is being discussed. This derails the conversation, moving it away from whatever social issue is being discussed and putting the focus on white people’s concerns. I have lost count on the number of posts on DL where this has happened, and I’d like to figure out how we can stop doing this.

What Creeping Sharia Law Looks Like

What Creeping Sharia Law Looks Like

And this is right here in Millsboro and the Indian River School District, where one Shaun Fink is trying to impose his religious bigotries (beliefs masquerading as bigotry) on the high school students in the District. You can read the details of Mr. Fink’s attempt to impose this atrocious bit of Christian Sharia law in this NJ article. Mr. Fink is hiding behind his so-called Christianity to try to demonize and ostracize LGBT people, objecting to the teaching of differences in sexual orientation as against his beliefs. Unfortunately, Mr. Fink still thinks he is living in the last century where not only could you get away with that kind of bigotry, but there was little price to be paid for it. In this century, this kind of bigotry is simply not a survial skill or a leadership skill — two things you want your kids to have. An official demonization of LGBT people — objecting to making them normal (as if they aren’t already) not only does not serve these kids, but also tries to use the government to impose your bigotry on others. Even more, what Mr. Fink knows is that kids are more tolerant of differences among them, including LGBT differences. Trying to curb a basic course on sexuality to impart Mr. Fink’s message that LGBT people are not “normal” is about him imposing his beliefs on these kids — because he knows that they don’t prioritize these differences. And trying to control other people — their behavior and their beliefs is what Sharia Law is all about, right?

Catholic Ministry States: Fetuses Are Not People

Filed in National by on January 24, 2013 10 Comments

Why would a religious organization who has been extremely vocal when it comes to abortion, contraception and the unyielding belief that life begins at conception suddenly claim that state law protects doctors from liability concerning unborn fetuses on grounds that those fetuses are not persons with legal rights.

Because they are being sued.

Republican Super PAC Threatens To Put Religion On The Table

Filed in National by on May 17, 2012 18 Comments

My first thought is… are they seriously considering putting religion front and center?  That strikes me as politically nuts since the last thing Romney obviously wants to discuss is his Mormonism – Hell, he can’t even refer to his religion by name!  And if this PAC goes down the religion road then I’d expect Romney’s religion would suddenly become fair game… and he’d end up not only uttering the word Mormon, but explaining its tenets to his Real Christian base.

Can A Progressive Also Believe in G-D

Filed in National by on June 10, 2011 49 Comments

It’s a simple question and it grew out of some of the comments that were left on my post regarding circumcision. As a progressive/liberal, I also believe in G-D. I attend synagogue regularly, I serve on its board of directors, and I teach in its religious school. I also believe in evolution and the Big […]

Politics And Religion

Filed in National by on January 18, 2011 32 Comments

Imagine if something like this was said by a non-Christian governor: ”Now I will have to say that, if we don’t have the same daddy, we’re not brothers and sisters,” he said. “So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not […]

“Conservative” Jesus

“Conservative” Jesus

I’m not surprised by this article, since many conservatives politicize Jesus.  Instead of modeling their lives after Jesus, they model Jesus after their lives.   Very convenient.  They’ve reduced their religion to taking sides at a sporting event. He helped the poor without one government program. He healed the sick without a government health care system. […]

Kentucky’s Creationist Theme Park

Filed in National by on December 2, 2010 6 Comments

Oh, for crying out loud! I just got back from the press conference where Steve Beshear announced his enthusiastic support for a Creationist theme park (“Ark Encounter”) that teaches children that not only did humans live with dinosaurs several thousand years ago, but they rode on “Noah’s Ark” with them. And the tax breaks that […]

Arizona Takes The Lead In The Dumbest State Contest

Arizona for the gold. In an era saturated with absurd moments of anti-Muslim fear-mongering, mosques have become a touchstone for Islamophobia. Even unbuilt mosques have set off a wave of anti-Muslim sentiment in Tennessee, Texas, California, and most notably, New York. Not to be outdone, the people of Pheonix, AZ were quick to call foul […]
