Castle’s Failure

We’ve talked quite a bit on Castle’s failure to recognize the threat of the Tea Party and Christine O’Donnell. Castle’s failure is a lot more than just campaign rust. Castle did nothing while the Republican party became more and more extreme. Here’s a case in point:

Cap-and-trade is an environmental program intended to reduce greenhouse gases by allowing polluters to trade permits for emissions in ways that benefit cleaner industries and help those businesses needing more time. But cap-and-trade became an unlikely rallying cry for O’Donnell supporters during her campaign.

Joseph Cooper, a Johns Hopkins University professor and a member of the Annenberg Foundation’s Institutions of Democracy Project, that cap-and-trade legislation became a symbol and rallying issue for groups unhappy over the economy and government mandates.

Conservative talk-show hosts and conservative publications hammered at the issue in recent weeks, making points that resonated with conservative voters. They identified Castle as the poster child for cap-and-trade.

“You have an economy that’s in serious trouble and they’re talking about taxing utilities and raising costs for benefits that are disputable,” Cooper said. “If the country were in good shape, maybe there would be a more balanced discussion. The problem is people are suffering out there, and the realities of what people confront in their daily lives overcome media debates.”

That idea took root in Delaware and was frequently mentioned as a top issue by O’Donnell supporters questioned about their votes Tuesday.

Yes, Castle was defeated by cap and trade. Republican voters cited it as their top concern. The cap & trade program was a fairly small-scale program to reduce emissions by allowing corporations to buy permits to release pollutants, and those permits would decrease the total amount allowed to be emitted slowly year by year.

Less than a year ago, cap and trade was the policy of choice for tackling climate change.

Environmental groups and their foes in industry joined hands to embrace the approach, a market-driven system that sets a ceiling on global warming pollution while allowing companies to trade permits to meet it. President Obama praised it by name in his first budget, and the authors of the House climate and energy bill passed last June largely built their measure around it.

That sounds like something Republicans should support! Don’t they supposedly love the “free market?” It was a Republican idea!

The idea began as a middle-of-the-road Republican plan to unleash the market to reduce power plant pollution and spur innovation. But when lawmakers tried to apply the concept to the far more pervasive problem of carbon dioxide emissions, it ran into gale-force opposition from the oil industry, conservative groups that portrayed it as an economy-killing tax and lawmakers terrified that it would become a bonanza for Wall Street traders and Enron-style manipulators.

Mike Castle sat back and did nothing while his own party demonized the idea of cap & trade. They turned it into “cap & tax.” In fact, Republicans are now completely opposed to doing anything about the environment and all GOP candidates this cycle are global warming deniers.

What did Mike Castle do to stop this? Did he ever stand up and give a speech about how important this is? Or did he do his usual “they have a point” go-along-to-get-along shtick? Mike Castle thought the legislation was important enough to break with his party but not enough to stand up to them. Unfortunately we all lose when extremists run the show.

Last Night I Was Shocked, Today It Makes Sense

Last night I couldn’t believe Christine O’Donnell beat Mike Castle.  I walked around stunned.  How could this happen?  And then I realized what happened.  Why wouldn’t she win?  For far too many years the entire Republican Party has fed their supporters a steady diet of issue-less tripe.  They’ve run on liberty, freedom, real America, family values, Christian nation, etc.  Even their claim of “less government” rings hollow due to lack of specifics.  But today’s GOP doesn’t do specifics – they simply call their opponent names (commie lib, socialist, etc), question their Americanism, and wrap themselves in their god and the flag.

So why wouldn’t O’Donnell win?  Ideology trump issues.  That has been the GOP message for years.  Last night establishment Republicans lost to their own strategy.

Castle Is Optimistic

Politico writes that the Delaware GOP believes Christine O’Donnell’s momentum has stalled and that Mike Castle will prevail tonight.

Republican National Committeewoman Priscilla Rakestraw, who has been working the phones on Castle’s behalf, and who spoke to 300 potential voters at the Academy of Lifelong Learning Thursday, said she believed O’Donnell’s momentum has sputtered over the past few days due to the heightened scrutiny surrounding her record.

“The phones this afternoon and tonight, were totally different. People were much more willing to talk and much more forthcoming. Democrats were even asking how they could help, and I told them to call their Republican friends,” Rakestraw said late Monday, predicting an 8-point victory for Castle. “The mood seems different.”

Even the Delaware GOP thinks the race will be in single digits under the best case scenario.

He projected that if turnout draws 30 percent of the state’s 180,000 registered Republicans, the former two-term governor and nine-term congressman would win by 8 to 12 percentage points. If turnout just breaks 20 percent, he believes Castle’s margin will shrink to 4 to 6 points, but said he would survive.

“Watch the early returns from the districts surrounding the city of Wilmington but not in it — that’s the key to [the] whole mess,” Mell told POLITICO.

Castle is relying on New Castle County to carry him to victory. We’ll all be watching!

GOP Claims Castle Leads By 7

The war of words between the Delaware Republican establishment and the O’Donnell campaign continues. Tom Ross suggests that the PPP Poll will drive Castle voters to the polls:

“I don’t buy it, it’s a Democratic poll, but it’s all about turnout. There’s a large segment of the population that is familiar with her antics, that she’s kooky and they really don’t have to worry about it,” Ross said. “I think the good thing is that it might grab the casual voter laughing about her claims for the last two weeks. I walk into places and people start laughing, ‘Oh are you hiding in the bushes?'” he said, referencing O’Donnell’s claim to The Weekly Standard that party operatives were trailing her home at night.

Another Delaware-based party operative said internal polling showed Castle leading O’Donnell by 7 points, a margin that still is much closer than many ever expected.

“The PPP poll is actually helping us, scaring the heck out of New Castle County Republicans,” said the aide.

The Castle campaign has not released this internal poll and I wonder how old it is. Most of the action in the polls has occurred since the Palin endorsement on Thursday. The Delaware GOP team has been quite active today, actively pushing a story of O’Donnell’s lawsuit against the ISI (for $6.9M). No matter how this turns out tomorrow, the big loser is the Delaware Republican party.

Where Did Castle Go Wrong?

Even if Castle manages to squeak by in tomorrow’s primary, this primary election has to be seen as a huge loss for Mike Castle. Castle is a 30-year officeholder in Delaware with a clean record. How did he get brought so low by a marginal candidate like Christine O’Donnell? Mike Castle talked to The Hill about how Lisa Murkowski warned him:

Castle said Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) phoned him after her stunning primary loss at the hands of Tea Party-backed Joe Miller with a warning.

“She told me to be careful, because [The Tea Party Express] will come at me with everything they’ve got,” Castle recounted. “They’re certainly not above misrepresentation.”

Castle said while he took Murkowski’s warning to heart, he was already taking the primary challenge from O’Donnell seriously.

“We understand what we’re up against and we’re not taking this lightly,” Castle said, bemoaning the involvement of the Tea Party Express. “This is the first election I can remember in Delaware where a campaign is being funded almost entirely by out of state interests.”

Mike Castle did respond to O’Donnell’s threat. In the last few weeks, the Delaware GOP has aggressively attacked O’Donnell, but this doesn’t seem to be working. Castle’s unfavorables have gone down more than O’Donnell’s.

It’s a mystery to me why Mike Castle didn’t recognize the Tea Party threat. He’s one of the first people to have had a confrontation with them (the famous “Crazy Eileen” episode). I wonder why Mike Castle hasn’t emphasized his rightwing record in the current Congress, to fight allegations that he’s liberal. Castle basically ignored O’Donnell until it was too late.

Is there anything Castle could have done to change things or is this just a really weird year and Castle’s facing forces beyond his control?

PPP Shows O’Donnell Lead

PPP says the DE-Sen race is too close to call but shows a lead for O’Donnell:

It looks like there’s a real possibility of a major upset in the Delaware Senate primary on Tuesday night, with insurgent conservative Christine O’Donnell leading longtime Congressman and Governor Mike Castle 47-44. That 3 point lead is well within the poll’s margin of error.

If Castle is indeed defeated Tuesday night it will be yet another sign that conservatives have a strangle hold on the Republican Party and moderates may or may not be welcome anymore. Castle has an overwhelming 69-21 lead with moderate voters but they only make up 33% of the likely primary electorate. O’Donnell has a 62-31 lead with conservatives that’s more than enough to propel her to the overall lead.

It’s clear that Castle’s popularity has taken a sharp turn in the wrong direction over the last month. An August PPP poll found his favorability with Delaware Republicans at a 60/25 spread. Now his favorables within the party are negative at 43/47. That’s largely a product of 55% of voters in his party saying they think he’s too liberal compared to 37% who think he’s about right.

Say hello to Senator Coons.

The PPP Tease

PPP Polls has been polling Delaware this weekend, specifically the Republican primary races. The numbers will be released sometime tonight but meanwhile they’re teasing us with some of the results.

53% of primary voters in Delaware think that Mike Castle is too liberal

PPP says the race is in single digits. O’Donnell’s challenge is to get almost all of these 53% of Delaware Republicans to vote for her over Castle. Has Castle done enough to make Republicans doubt her? While we’re busy speculating here’s two subjects we can discuss:

  • Christine O’Donnell has big signs up with her picture on it. Is it a good idea for politicians to put their picture on campaign signs? I’ve only seen this with female candidates.
  • Was it a mistake for Castle to refuse to debate O’Donnell?
  • As soon as the numbers are out I’ll post them.

Bigger Than Palin? Try The NRA

Another big endorsement for Christine O’Donnell:

The National Rifle Association endorsed conservative commentator Christine O’Donnell Friday in Delaware’s Republican Senate primary. The Tea Party-backed O’Donnell is looking to upset Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) on Tuesday.

The NRA’s Political Victory Fund cited O’Donnell’s “commitment to preserving the Second Amendment” in its endorsement of her Friday.

“Christine O’Donnell will be a strong voice in fighting ongoing efforts by anti-gun politicians to dismantle the Second Amendment,” chairman of the NRA’s Political Victory Fund Chris Cox said in a statement. “We ask all Delaware gun-owners and hunters to vote for Christine O’Donnell in the U.S. Senate Republican primary on September 14th.”

The NRA’s endorsement made no mention of Castle, but the longtime congressman earns an “F” from the gun lobby for his voting record.

I’ll bet this, more than the Palin endorsement makes a difference.

    Christine Loves Her Some Innuendo

Pass the popcorn!  And break out those… man-pants?

O’Donnell appeared last on Mark Levin’s radio show, and fired back at an FEC complaint that was filed by the Delaware Republican Party, which supports Castle, alleging that she has illegally coordinated her campaign activities with the Tea Party Express.

“You know, these are the kind of cheap, underhanded, un-manly tactics that we’ve come to expect from Obama’s favorite Republican, Mike Castle,” said O’Donnell. “You know, I released a statement today, saying Mike this is not a bake-off, get your man-pants on. (Laughs)

Mike Castle Has A Short Memory

We already know that Mike Castle thinks deficits are bad when Democrats are president and loves spending money unless it directly benefits Delawareans. Mike Castle is now mad and blames Obama for Mike Castle’s own vote to raise taxes.

Today, candidate for Senate Mike Castle issued the following statement in response to Chris Coons’ endorsement of President Obama’s economic plan that includes massive tax hikes and a second Stimulus Bill:

“Now is the worst time to consider raising taxes on any American. With our country facing near double digit unemployment and an economy struggling through the worst downturn in decades, increasing taxes at any level will kill jobs and slow down our recovery. Now is the time when families and investors need stability, not more debt or higher taxes.

“It is typical that Chris Coons would immediately rubber stamp the president’s call for higher taxes and a second ‘stimulus’ package, as he repeatedly raised taxes on the residents of New County Castle, refused to rule out voting for higher taxes if elected to the Senate and supported the first stimulus package that has failed to fulfill its promise of keeping unemployment below 8% or create long-term job growth.

“Delawareans know that I am the only candidate in this race who has a proven record of opposing government spending and higher taxes, and this is a fight I will continue in the U.S. Senate.”

Does Mike Castle realize that Mike Castle voted for these tax increases? The Bush tax cuts enacted in 2001 had a sunset provision in 2011. Mike Castle voted “yes.”

As far as government spending goes – could Mike Castle please show me where he voted against spending when Bush was president? With smart politicking like this I can see why Castle is proud of his important Bill Lee endorsement.

Any Idea Why This Is Important?

Yesterday failed GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Lee endorsed Mike Castle for Senate. He sent a letter to the Delaware GOP which was released to the news media. Is anyone actually suprised by this endorsement?

    From the letter:

I have been a conservative all my life. Like Ronald Reagan, I was a conservative long before it was the popular way to be. I believe Mike Castle is the best candidate to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate.

His opponent in this primary is delusional, insisting that she carried two counties against Joe Biden in 2008. She has lost touch with reality. It is crucial that conservative Republicans focus on the reality of winning in November.

Some groups outside Delaware, trying to promote their own agendas, are supporting Christine O’Donnell. They have stated that they would rather elect a Democrat than Mike Castle. Are they CRAZY?
I say to them, get out of here! We in Delaware don’t need outsiders telling us what to think.

So let’s pull together and prepare for the battle that will really determine our future and our nation’s, the one in November.

So, the gubernatorial candidate who literally phoned it in endorsed the candidate who hasn’t really campaigned in at least a decade. YAWN. So, why was this all over the media yesterday? The NJ talked about it, the Delaware GOP tweeted it, other GOP operatives tweeted it and Mike Castle tweeted it. I also heard this story on the local NPR coverage this morning.

I guess I’m continually amazed at the hold that Castle has on the local media. The media is lovinginly repeating the attacks on O’Donnell – delusional & crazy.

    Tornoe’s Toon: Christine O’Donnelled Out

    christine-odonnell-tea-party

Obviously as a cartoonist, any crazy is good crazy. So Christine O’Donnell, Delaware’s own little Sarah Palin, is like finding a pot of gold.

However, there is a part of me that is saddened that such an unqualified, inexperienced masturbation-hating nutjob has an outside shot to beat out a Republican incumbent who is likely to win Delaware’s open Senate seat and flip a blue state to red.

This coming week should be fun, with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of advertising being flow in from out-of-state Tea Party groups to prop up their conservative wingnut. Wonder if they’ll air drop the lady in red who questioned Obama’s citizenship at a Castle town hall meeting last year.

Let’s guess who she’s supporting in the primary.

Does Castle Understand The Tea Party?

Reporters were all over the state yesterday covering the Castle-O’Donnell race. Dave Weigel, from Slate covered some campaign events and got some comments from Mike Castle.

There’s something almost quaint about this faith in the local media, especially when O’Donnell’s supporters are asked about the same stories. They, like many members of the Tea Party movement, don’t think that information in newspapers is definitive; it may even be inferior to what they hear from their friends or from talk radio. This is one of many reasons why Castle gets along with these activists the way a negotiator might deal with a hostage-taker.

“Some of the things they seem to advocate go beyond the norm,” says Castle. “I have trouble distinguishing sometimes between the factions out there that are in this ultra-conservative mode. You know—be it the patriots, or this Tea Party Express, or the different factions of the Tea Party. I’ve seen advocacy for eliminating the Department of Education, for example.”

He’s interrupted again—”Hi, Debbie!”—but keeps musing on how Tea Party activists shout down legislation by saying it’s unconstitutional.

“There are a lot of things that the federal government does that, you know, might not be explicitly in the Constitution per se,” says Castle. “There are a lot of things that the states do, too. And they’ve been doing it in some cases since the 18th century.” He shrugs. “I do suppose it is a good question to ask.”

It doesn’t sound like Mike Castle is taking the Tea Party very seriously, and that’s a problem. They’re going to be running his party soon and perhaps at least one of the houses of Congress.
