If you didn’t get a chance to read the Jeff Montgomery articles on tainted groundwater, put down that glass of water and read it now.  Seriously, put down the water.  You come away from that series feeling like a passenger that has no knowledge of boats, but just found out that your ship is sinking […]

Next Wednesday, John Kowalko’s House Energy Committee will conduct a hearing to investigate the cost structure being used by Delmarva Power to install “smart meters” in homes in Delaware.  In Delaware, the cost of installing these are borne by the ratepayer, whereas in other states, Delmarva picks up the cost. Guest Post: A Eulogy for Chris White

Filed in National by on April 23, 2010 17 Comments

From Representative John Kowalko (D-Newark):

I’ve known Chris White for over four years, working with him intimately over a nine month period to produce the Foreclosure Mediation Program. No one brought more knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication to crafting the successful creation of that program and, simply put, it probably would not exist today without Chris.

Healthcare NOW!

Filed in National by on February 21, 2010 46 Comments

On Friday, I was able to leave work a little early and visit a healthcare rally held in Newark. The event was a stop on an 8 day march from Philadelphia to Washington. The march is called The March for Melanie in honor of an activist from Philadelphia, Melanie Shouse, that recently lost her battle with breast cancer.

Melanie’s death certificate certainly said that the cause of death was breast Cancer, but it was just as much caused by a lack of healthcare.

Who Will Run and How Do They Stack Up?

Filed in National by on January 26, 2010 34 Comments

With Beau Biden’s withdrawal from the Senate race yesterday, we have a lot of scrambling going on. Let’s discuss the pros and cons of each of the prospective Democratic candidates.

First, let’s dispense with Lt. Governor Matt Denn. I spoke to him yesterday. He isn’t going to run. His two kids come first in his life, and not seeing them for days at a time would be an abdication of his most important role. But let me say for the record, he would be my first choice.

Kowalko Suits Up For Battle

Filed in Delaware by on June 28, 2009 6 Comments

John Kowalko has been fighting tooth and nail with the Governor (against the across-the-board pay cuts) and against the Republicans that don’t think that we should increase a single tax (even a small tax on alcohol and a larger one on cigarettes).  But now, it’s crunch time.  By midnight Tuesday they need to have a […]

Pushing The Issue: HB253

Filed in Delaware by on June 18, 2009 4 Comments

John Kowalko chairs the Joint Sunset Committee and he’s trying to challenge the Delaware Way from that vantage point.  Case in point: HB253 (restructuring the Victims Compensation Board).  From the presser: House Bill 253 is identical to Senate Bill 144, which was developed by and sponsored by the members of the Joint Sunset Committee, a […]
