Justice for Tyler Clementi

Tyler Clementi was a Rutgers University student who committed suicide days after his roommate showed a video of him with his boyfriend to other students. And now, that roommate has been convicted of hate crimes, evidence tampering, and witness tampering in the case.

Mr. Ravi’s roommate, Tyler Clementi, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge three days after Mr. Ravi viewed him on the webcam. The case became a symbol of the struggles facing gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers and the problem of cyberbullying in an era when laws governing hate crimes have not kept up with evolving technology.

Ravi had said all along that this was only a prank, that he didn’t hate gays and it was all a terrible mistake. But he couldn’t explain why he deleted twitter feeds telling people to view the webcam and making disparaging remarks about gays.

Ravi’s conviction will not bring Tyler Clementi back. But it should serve notice to all who think that those of us who are gay and lesbian will sit back and just “take it” when we’re made the butt of “jokes” or hate speech. Maybe it’s time for gays to bash back. Maybe it’s time for us to bash our oppressors where it hurts – the pocketbook and the voting booth.

Time for Pat Robertson to Hang it Up

I know that Pat Robertson hates the gays. He’s been on us for decades, blaming us for earthquakes, hurricanes, forest fires, and 9/11. Personally, me thinks he dost protest too much (you know what they say about closet cases – the ones who yell the loudest about the gays are the ones with the most skeletons in their closets).

But this latest bit of wisdom from Robertson takes the cake. G-D, in his omnipotence, decided to stop people from “doing something gay in New York” by making it snow.

Rev. Pat Robertson sparked controversy in today’s broadcast of his “700 Club” program when he claimed that G-D created the blizzard currently battering the Northeast “to punish Americans who were planning to drive to do something gay.”

__Explaining his theory, Robertson said, “Because of the bad road conditions the Almighty has made, any gay activities that people were planning on doing will have to be postponed by a day or two.”__ Additionally, he argued, G-D shut down major airports in the New York area “so that people who were hoping to fly to do something of a gay nature would have to take a train or a bus, so it might be days before the gay thing they were going to do could occur.”__

So I’m wondering, what were these gay things that people were going to New York to do? Catch a musical? Go to the Metropolitan Opera? Dinner at Elaine’s? I’m really at a loss.

And Robertson didn’t spare the straights, either.

As for the millions of straight people in New York City who were also grounded by the bad weather, the televangelist said, “I think G-D probably wonders: If these people are really straight, then what are they doing in New York?”__

Personally, I think that since Robertson came out (no pun intended) for legalizing marijuana, he’s been toking up like Cheech and Chong. Either that or he’s just a stupid ass. Or maybe both.

Pat, time to turn in the Bible and the go away to that rest home. You’re an embarrassment to all men and women of the cloth. And I think the Almighty has more things to worry about than people going to New York to “do something gay,” things like poverty, homelessness, endless wars, and the other ills that affect society.
