Forced Birth Improves The Economy? Armed “young, hot little girls on campus” Will Stop Rape?

Forced Birth Improves The Economy? Armed “young, hot little girls on campus” Will Stop Rape?

There’s just so much of this nonsense. As a woman, who’s also raising a teen daughter, it’s overwhelming and frightening. It’s also disheartening when issues that directly impact over 50% of the country are dismissed as single-issue votes. Women do not view abortion or contraception as a “pet” issue. These issues directly affect our economy. Having a child is one of the biggest economic decisions for both men and women. If only we treated these issues with the same freak out we display when it came to a gas tax and tax cuts – and, make no mistake, abortion and contraception are a way bigger deal than things like the gas tax and tax cuts. Mainly because cutting/raising taxes won’t make a damn bit of difference to a woman’s (who’s forced to give birth) economy.

And yeah, I’m going to keep writing about women’s issues, mainly because it’s really all the GOP talks about. They link controlling women to every flippin’ bill they pen. It’s almost impossible to discuss anything the GOP puts forth without discussing women – and religion and gay people. All Republican roads lead to controlling sex.

The Hobby Lobby Ruling Is A Slippery Slope That Will Affect More Than Contraceptives

The Hobby Lobby Ruling Is A Slippery Slope That Will Affect More Than Contraceptives

If you haven’t read Justice Ginsburg’s dissent in the Hobby Lobby case you really should.  She makes excellent points – points that demonstrate how this ruling will extend beyond contraceptives.

In a decision of startling breadth, the Court holds that commercial enterprises, including corporations, along with partnerships and sole proprietorships, can opt out of any law (saving only tax laws) they judge incompatible with their sincerely held religious beliefs.

She’s correct, of course.  No matter how the majority opinion tried to limit this ruling to controlling women (and Alito didn’t even bother to explain why this ruling was limited) it opens the door to every company’s “sincerely held religious beliefs”.  How could it not?

BREAKING: Hobby Lobby Ruling Today In

Filed in National by on June 30, 2014 69 Comments

I’m not sure what to expect, but I’m leaning towards the Supreme Court, yet again, not doing their job.  My guess, and I could very well be wrong, is that they rule in favor of Hobby Lobby, but pull a Bush v Gore cop out – meaning that the enforcers of the law of the […]

Republicans Losing Women Voters

Filed in National by on April 2, 2012 5 Comments

President Obama has emerged with an impressive lead in swing states around the country — thanks to women voters abandoning the GOP in droves, according to a new USA Today/Gallup poll showing President Obama leading among women voters in the top dozen battleground states by a whopping 18 points — greater than the 12-point gender gap he won with in 2008.

Women Are Not Single Issue Voters And Contraception Is Not A Single Issue

Filed in National by on March 11, 2012 8 Comments

Lately I’ve heard politicians of all stripes state that women are not single issue voters. This statement appears when the subject of contraception emerges and the two parties use the line for different reasons. The point is… access to affordable contraception encompasses more than a single issue. Rush Limbaugh and the Republicans act like contraception is something that only pertains to a woman looking for a good time on a Friday night – as a way to cut loose without suffering the “consequences.”

For 99% of women who use, or have used, contraception, the decision to prevent pregnancy is based on economics. Can we afford to have a child at this time? Are we at a point in our lives where having a child would be a responsible financial decision? Do we even want to have children? (That last question has Republicans taking to their fainting couches.) If we were talking about buying a new car and whether we could afford it, or if spending our money on that was responsible when we were struggling to pay other bills, we would be applauded for demonstrating good fiscal sense. In fact, Republicans normally love to wag their fingers at people buying big screen televisions they can’t afford. Pointing out how people are irresponsible with their finances is one of the GOP’s favorite pass times.

So why don’t they admit that household economies are directly tied to family planning?

Republicans Should Have Learned The Komen Lesson

Filed in National by on March 4, 2012 46 Comments

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.

That. Is. Not. An. Apology. What that is the classic: Sorry, if you can’t take a joke. I was just being humorous, but you’re too sensitive to have a sense of humor. I was simply making a very important, bigger point, that you’re too stupid to understand. An apology isn’t an apology if you can fit in the word “but.” Go ahead and add that word after Rush’s first sentence. It fits beautifully. And the backlash that’s building around this situation has much in common with the Komen fiasco. Attack women, or an institution women love, and face the consequences. 2012 is shaping up to be the year of the woman.

GOP Gov nominee in Virginia opposed contraception

AG Bob McDonnell, the GOP’s nominee for the ’09 Governor’s race in Virginia, is currently enjoying a modest lead in the polls; but what are Virginia voters going to make of this? At age 34, two years before his first election and two decades before he would run for governor of Virginia, Robert F. McDonnell […]
