Song of the Day Jan. 7: Ray Lamontagne, “Crazy”

Filed in National by on January 7, 2019

I’m a sucker for a good cover, especially when it gives a new perspective on the original. “Crazy” was the hit off the 2006 album by Gnarls Barkley (a collaboration between CeeLo Green and Danger Mouse). Later that year Ray Lamontagne sang it during a radio station acoustic session, and it quickly went viral. Its only official release was as the B-side to a 7-inch British single.

The original shows off Green’s amazing voice, which he used to good effect — he really does sound off his rocker. Lamontagne’s version strips away the production to showcase the pain in the lyrics, showing that you don’t have to hurt to be crazy, but it helps.
