Nov. 23 Open Thread: Judge Dread

Filed in National, Open Thread by on November 23, 2018

Now even SCOTUS Chief Justice John Roberts isn’t Trumpy enough for Trump. Roberts rebuked Trump for trash-talking the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and Trump has lashed back ever since. Roberts pointed out that there are no “Trump judges” or “Obama judges,” something Trump could have figured out himself had he registered that three of his losses in court lately have been handed down by judges he himself appointed. Picking a fight with Roberts seems particularly stupid since Roberts is now the court’s swing vote.

Uh-oh. Looks like those crafty Deep State agents have made a fool of Trump once again, this time on the Khashoggi murder. Apparently the CIA has a smoking-gun recording of the Saudi crown prince ordering that the dissident journalist be silenced. At least Trump is telling the truth about his refusal to accept the truth: He wants the Saudis’ money.

Democrats surfed a blue wave with less help than usual from corporate PACs, and those corporations aren’t about to take that lying down. A corporate PAC trade group intends to lobby for higher limits on campaign contributions, perhaps in exchange for greater transparency.

Cops in Georgia have a great tool in their war on drugs — a roadside drug-test kit that gives positive results on just about anything. For example, this woman was jailed for four months after the test registered “methamphetamine” on a bag of cotton candy.

In cast you missed this, Nate Silver lays out the GOP death spiral: Democrats got almost as many votes in the midterms as Trump got when he was elected. As Lindsay Graham once said, they can’t make angry white men fast enough to keep up.

Finally, Gritty was interviewed by Time magazine just before Thanksgiving and one exchange in particular gave us more evidence the creature lives in Delaware County, Pa.:

What’s your favorite Thanksgiving side dish?

Simple. Boat of gravy. With a straw.

White meat or dark meat on your turkey? Do you wish there was orange meat?

Boat. Of. Gravy. With straw.

Khashoggi is the murder and dismemberment that , dare I say it, will not die. And this time the tape is not a rumor but a fact, had not heard there’s a tape of the crown prince giving the order. Trump is playing a money game with the Saudis despite the massive dislike of the kingdom and it’s many evil ways. And as usual Gritti does not fail to impress, staying on point and delivering the message.

“We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,”- John Roberts

How gullible does this guy think we are?

  3. RE Vanella says:

Gullible, yeah. Why in the world would anyone try to pull a fast one on us!

  4. bamboozer says:

Roberts is famously obsessed with the legacy of this court. He’s also trying to prop up the courts tattered image of impartiality, rather hard to do when you favor big business with every decision and have gifted the nation with Citizens United, Hobby Lobby and District of Columbia vs. Heller. He should give it up, it’s a far right court and we’re stuck with it for a generation.

  5. RE Vanella says:

    On balance this about right.

To be fair though, there have been Bush appointees who’ve ruled against the president

    The chief himself upheld Obamacare.

At least when adult professional literate sentient humans lie there’s enough truth to make sense of the words.

  6. Jason330 says:

” Picking a fight with Roberts seems particularly stupid since Roberts is now the court’s swing vote.”

Except Roberts strikes me as one of those idiots who will try to prove his impartiality by siding with Trump.

    • Alby says:

Which Trump just made impossible. Now the only way Roberts can show independence is by voting against him. This is why it seems particularly — even spectacularly — stupid, by which I mean self-destructive.

Trump strikes me as Bill Murray in “Groundhog Day,” where he tries every form of self-destruction to get out of his predicament. Trump is the most miserable man who ever lived.

  7. nathan arizona says:

Whatever his faults, it’s good to see Roberts speak out against Trumpian ideas on court independence. Let’s not quibble. We need all the allies we can get. And preserving the “independence of the court isa good motivator.

I’ve found you can also ingest a whole can of cranberry sauce with a straw if you really work at it. Must be the jellied kind, the cranberry sauce preferred by all right-thinking people. Although sometimes I’m not sure that’s cranberry sauce at all.

  8. what did you say? says:

The real issue is simple, Trump is replacing Judges and will nominate two more to SCOTUS

    Too bad liberals
