“Kathy McGuiness to Drop From Auditors Race Citing Multiple Conflicts of Interest”

Filed in National by on October 1, 2018

The above headline still has, remarkably, not run anywhere. Nevertheless, Spads is hitting the airwaves making this valid point.

James Spadola, the Republican nominee for Delaware State Auditor, attacked his Democratic opponent Kathy McGuiness, citing a conflict of interest over campaign contributions and endorsements accepted from state leaders, the same people she’ll have to hold fiscally accountable if elected.

Spadola appeared on the Dan Gaffney Show Friday morning and said McGuiness has too many conflicts of interest to serve as Auditor, specifically citing a $1,200 campaign contribution she accepted from the Insurance Commissioner.

“If you want an independent fiscal watchdog there’s only one option, and it’s me, James Spadola. If you look at my challenger, she has taken money and endorsements from the same department heads, the same people that she’s supposed to hold accountable,” Spadola said. “Trinidad Navarro, the Insurance Commissioner, donated $1,200 to her and there’s allegations right now about the Insurance Commissioner’s Office.”

Spadola also raised concerns over the several endorsements McGuiness has touted from elected officials, including an endorsement from Wilmington City Council President Hanifa Shabazz, who had to request an audit of the city council last year after it was learned money was directed towards a program that had ties to a former council member.

As much as I want McGuiness to lose because her candidacy is fraudulent, I want Spads to lose because he is a Republican.

Holy Spadola Batman! Too late for a different Dem candidate? A real one this time.

  2. Peter Briccotto says:

Hold your nose and vote Spadola. I am. Not because Spadola stinks…but there’s that stench his party can’t cover. The Auditor’s office isn’t a policy office…Senator/Representative/Governor McGuiness gets a hold of it 😉

  3. Alby says:

The office has been in Republican hands since Christ was a corporal. I doubt Spadola could fuck it up worse than Wagner did.

  4. RE Vanella says:

Discussed this with some very savvy activists last week. I’m still on the fence. A few people whose opinions I respect were trying to convince me to abstain.

Spadola was a cop and a serial office seeker. While a vote for him is a fuck you to the Delaware Way. A vote for Spadola just puts him on a neo-Castle path. That also does zero good.

    I’m back to undecided.

  5. Delaware Left says:

Is it that hard to just leave the line blank?

    • RE Vanella says:

No, it isn’t. It isn’t about ease or difficulty. Is actively trying to screw K McG worth it considering you have to vote for a Republican ex-cop Castle sycophant serial office seeker?

I think I answered my own question.

  6. P Armstrong says:

The question is: who does leaving it blank favor??

Also, wouldn’t it be a conflict to serve in two elected positions at the same time, especially if one position is Auditor? KMc has told people she intends to continue serving as RB Commissioner if elected to state office.

Let us also not forget that she is the one who tried to give LLCs voting rights in RB. . . . .

  7. RE Vanella says:

They’re both horrible in their own special way. The lesser of the evils is Spadola, bit is that enough for me to care?

  8. Peter Briccotto says:

Sometime y’all make me scratch me head! Sit out?!

First, this only Spadola’s second run at office. He came pretty close to beating McDowell in 2016 Senate Race. He’s no Protack!

Secondly, I much rather have a cop with tested investigative experience in the Auditor’s office instead of legislative hall. Let alone the fact that he’s financial background laps hers about 76 times. Let’s face, McGuinness is there as a stepping stone for her and a service to Speaker/Trooper Pistol Pete! Don’t worry, she can prescribe the heartburn meds for y’all when she’s in office doing his work! Haha! While Spadola was investigating financial crimes, she was debating parking fees and swimming pools!

She’s making a joke of our party by only being interested in fraud the week after she lost to BHL. Abstain and hand it to her, and I’ll remind you of it as she ascends to the throne in two our four years with zero leglistlaive accomplishment!

I don’t work typically work for Republicans, and James is a well deserved exception. Our Party will be better served with James in office today, and for many many many tomorrows.

  9. RE Vanella says:

    “much rather have a cop”

    “our party”

    “well deserved”

  10. puck says:

I’m holding my nose and voting for Spadola. Voting third party or blank is a vote for Park City Kathy and the Schwarzkopf brigade.

The whole point is to keep her out of statewide elective office. Our only hope for that is to elect Spadola. If we elect her, she’s on a path to become governor.

I don’t want to vote for a Republican, but this is strategic voting. Spadola will be easier to get rid of in four years than McGuinness. It’s like using maggots to cleanse an infected wound.

    • jason330 says:

Well put. But I doubt the maggots are up for the task this year. KMcG has the blue wave to ride.

      • RE Vanella says:

Yep. It’s a fair point. I just Can’t square the fact that, while we road block K McG, we put Spadola on the path to a bigger role later on. This, it seems to me, is just as shitty.

But I guess we cross that bridge when we come to it. Like puck argues. Stop Kathy now and stop Spadola later.

        • Peter Briccotto says:

I wouldn’t be as enthusiastic to support Spadola in a race on policy. In fact, since I’ve neber voted for. Republican in a legislative office, I can’t imagine I ever would. But I knows he’s prepared on day one to manage the office, and will be more focused on improving the office of the Auditor to better serve Delawareans.

  11. Sussex Worker says:

A Republican Auditor Spadola would immediately be the Party pick for higher office- there is no competition. A Democrat Auditor McGuiness would need major accomplishments in order to even try to jump over Bethany Hall-Long, Trinidad Navarro and maybe Colleen Davis

As to Spadola, how did he investigate financial crime in his 9 years as Newark police officer? He hasn’t held a job since. Look at his LinkedIn page- pay day loan job. Nothing at all about audits or financial crime.

You want to elect this man not even knowing his position on Trump or Arlett? He and Simpler and Lavelle have all got to go. Elect the Democrats and then Primary next time those who fail us

    • Alby says:

Neither candidate is a Democrat, though one is running as one.

Trinidad Navarro? Colleen Davis, who’s never won anything yet? So much for the deep Democratic Party bench.

    • RE Vanella says:

You know, this Sussex Worker makes a reasonable point. At least the Democrats have the stable and the sane on the back bench…

      GOP have
      –Simpler, Spadola
–Kent and Sussex doughy rubes (Bonini, the guy who brought a loaded 9mm into Salisbury airport)
      –Fucking maniacs (Arlett, Walker)

Even Bethany Hall Long is better than all those and she ain’t even that great….

(Please note: I saw the Truono routine at Cab with my own eyes. I thought it was a solid 8 minutes of stand-up. Fucking joke.)

Bill Lee’s like 85. Roll his ass out there…

The more I think on it. Let’s fucking bury these ghouls once and for all.

      Sussex Worker, I’m convinced!

  12. RE Vanella says:

“The literal mind is baffled by the ironic one, demanding explanations that only intensify the joke.” —–Christopher Hitchens

  13. RE Vanella says:

I wish I could explain how difficult it is for me to choose one hate over another.

  14. Anon says:

Why not vote for Spadola? Go on his website and you will find actual plans, in addition to his background. McG literally said “yeah, yeah. Actually, the Insurance Office, as I’ve brought up before several times, was audited in 2011 and they found it inconclusive and that was it. So, we wasted a lot of tax payer money and folks’ time and what do we have but an inconclusive report” when questioned about her donations from the Insurance Commissioner.
Who cares if Spadola has future plans; legislative R’s won’t win and he will literally make sure dark money doesn’t prevail. Kathy will do favors for her donors and treat the office as a joke. I know everybody wants to make sure our taxes aren’t being abused and yes, the Republican will do that. Look beyond party affiliation. Don’t let a letter distract you from a cheater who is waiting for Carper’s seat. Spadola is a good candidate. He distanced himself from Trump explicitly when he ran for State Senate and is a wholesome guy, get to know him he’s very accessible. I’m a lifelong Democrat but I vote for rightful people, not snake hacks. Keep McG out of political life please.

    • Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

There is no such thing as an inconclusive audit report. If the auditor could not reach a conclusion on the accuracy of the financial reports, that is effectively a failure.
You’ll forgive me for being a bit skeptical that a republican will be the one to come in and clean house. There has been a republican in that office for 30 years and been ineffective, the attempt to audit the IC office being a perfect example. Sadly, we are reduced to determining who will be the lesser long term evil rather than clinging to hope that the person elected will make a positive change for the state.

  15. puck says:

“A Democrat Auditor McGuiness would need major accomplishments in order to even try to jump over Bethany Hall-Long,”

McG doesn’t have to jump over BHL – she can jump under her in 2024 (Lieutenant Governor) and become governor-in-waiting. She would become a fixture in the DINO firmament, and would cause great damage serving the police caucus and charter school lobby. Better to block her now at Auditor and work for a real D auditor candidate in 2022.

  16. puck says:

One thing is sure. If you are one of the numerous petty tyrant grifters running a scam at your charter school fiefdom, you can rest easy no matter whether McGuinness or Spadola is Auditor. They’ve both got your back.

  17. Peter Briccotto says:

Suit yourself. Just don’t complain in 2024 when she ascends the throne. Unconventional thinking should be celebrated, which is why I come here every day to read! With that said, if you can’t see through the danger of McG after these two races with her dismissive, conceited, and disingenue behavior, then go do it. The odds of Spadola getting a state wide office policy office – like Simpler – would be controlled by Delaware Way Democrats. You really think McG would let that happen? Cut off your nose to spite your face at its finest.

And experience? Rehoboth is a mess! Dig a little deeper, and the stench is pretty solid.

  18. RE Vanella says:

Peter – You are not wrong. That’s why I said it’s a minefield wicket. No scoring options. Block and survive.

As far as not complaining, you come here everyday. Regardless of final decision and outcome, I’ll be complaining.

  19. Rep Paul Baumbach says:

Senator Bonini did not bring a loaded firearm to the airport, Senator Pettyjohn did.

    • RE Vanella says:

Fair point. It’s ambiguous. The comma was meant to separate the two rather than a descriptive phrase. As in the other bullets… “Simpler, Spadola” and “Arlett, Walker”. X, Y…

      But it’s not clear.

I knew it wasn’t Bonini. I knew it was another vapid blob of kindergarten paste in suit. Just didn’t feel like looking it up.

  20. puck says:

I read REV’s comment that way first (about the gun), but then I saw it could be read both ways
