Sept. 25 Open Thread: Trump Brings U.N. Gift of Laughter

Filed in National by on September 25, 2018

Not content with being a figurative laughingstock anymore, Donald Trump broke out his FIGJAM act (Fuck I’m Great, Just Ask Me) at the U.N. this morning and became a literal laughingstock as well. When he started bragging about how his administration is the greatest in U.S. history, the room full of world leaders broke out in laughter. Trump responded, “I didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s OK.” Fox News viewers never saw it, though; the network cut the replay just before the guffawing begins. The New Yorker’s Andy Borowitz joked that Trump will say, “I got much bigger laughs than Obama,” but that actually sounds like something he’ll tweet before the week is through.

The Kavanaugh Klusterfuck is exposing a class divide in this country, and Michelle Goldberg points out that the mollycoddling of America’s soft, pampered rich boys is how the privileged perpetuate themselves.

I never know how much stock to put in people like body language experts, but this one picked up an interesting tic in Kavanaugh’s Fox News interview: Whenever he said he wanted a “fair hearing” (not an investigation, as an innocent person would), he shook his head from side to side, as if his body were negating what his mouth was saying.

Novelist Gary Shteyngart, who was born in Russia, has a jaundiced view of his adoptive country, as evidenced in his novels “Absurdistan” and “Super Sad True Love Story.” He says when the Soviet Union fell he hoped the country would become more like the U.S. Instead, he laments, America is becoming more like Russia, a naked kleptocracy.

Do Fix News types ever care that the info they receive from their beloved entertainment network is altered, distorted or just general misinformation or are their fragile tribal egos needing to hear only what they want to hear all that matters?

“Without changing … relationships in society … between men and women, adults and children, whites and other ethnic groups, heterosexuals and gays … society will be riddled by domination, even in a socialistic ‘classless’ and ‘non-exploitative’ form.“

    I believe this.

Expect a tweet tonight about withholding UN funds or kicking them out of NYC or something.

Republicans hire sex-crimes prosecutor to question Ford, schedule Friday vote on Kavanaugh

“We have hired a female assistant to go on staff and to ask these questions in a respectful and professional way,” Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters.

Why the hell would Christine Blasey Ford agree to this?

    I mean, Jee-zus.

Between this and the way they’ve basically tricked the Times into putting Rosenstein in jeopardy (meeting scheduled for Thursday is pure coincidence I’m sure) I think we’re running out of runway…

Rachel Mitchell. Arizona sex crimes prosecutor…

  10. puck says:

Yesterday’s Rosenstein drama was a trial balloon, the Trump team probing the defenses. Apart from triggering the libs, what Trump learned is that if Rosenstein is fired, neither Republicans nor Democrats will do anything at all.

Only twist is the initial report was Today to retire. Vague.

Problem is now, you can’t fake it now. Everyone’s ready.

So… Who know? With the mid terms rolling up it’s coming to a head. Squeaky bum time. Dicey.
