Song of the Day 9/20: Sheer Mag, “Nobody’s Baby”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on September 20, 2018

OK, I sense this crowd wants some kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll, and given the news this week, I think it should be from a woman’s perspective.

Sheer Mag was very hot in Philly a couple of years ago. El Som gave them a shoutout when they were booked at the Arden Gild Hall last year, but I don’t think they’ve ever featured on Song of the Day, so here’s Tina Halladay spitting out “Nobody’s Baby”. If I’m wrong, so what, they’re worth hearing twice.

The song shows the band at their power-poppiest, with two guitars crunching out an arena-rock riff (twin-guitar attack!) behind Halladay’s distorted tender-tough snarl, and the lyrics on this one match the tenor of the times.

Most of their tunes, like “Can’t Stop Fighting,” repurpose classic rock sounds into something choppier and more post-modern. If you like straight-ahead melodic rock, give them a listen.

Always up for some killer guitar. Lot of good bands out of Philly lately.
