U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mum on Plans to Permanently Close St Georges Bridge

Filed in National by on September 15, 2018

While official word from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is that the St. Georges Bridge on Route 13 over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal will be closed from September 10th through January for repairs, rumors from within DelDot indicate that the bridge owners have no plans for reopening the bridge to vehicle traffic.

Since Tuesday when it closed, and no construction or survey crews have been seen on the span, questions began to swirl about the construction timetable. The Army Corps awarded a $3.7 million contract to Freyssinet, Inc. for “steel beam repairs” but that money is actually going toward converting the bridge to pedestrian/cyclist traffic after engineering studies disclose that the bridge is unfixable.

This stealthy closure appears to be intended to head off the kind of backlash DelDot endured when it announced plans to close the bridge when the Rt1, William V. Roth bridge opened in 1995.

If the bridge is unfixable I’d like to see some proof other than the say so of the Corp. of Engineers, they’ve been out to kill this bridge for over 20 years. Hard not to notice how crowded Delaware has become and how busy the highways are. We need this bridge and we need it to be functional.

$3.7 million doesn’t seem like enough for “steel beam repairs”

Is there any confirmed or documented truth to this, or are all your declarative sentences based solely on rumor and speculation?

Just because a handful of people don’t see something happening doesn’t mean it’s not actually happening. Perhaps Army Corps folks have been occupied with storm preparations?

It just occured to me that the if the Essayons want to find the Ga-jillion-Billion dollars Freyssinet, Inc is going to come back with as the real price to fix the bridge, they should have it designated part of Trump’s border wall.
