Song Of The Day: Sept. 11, 2018

Looks like it’s Richard Thompson Week.  When he performed at the Gild Hall, it was truly a mesmerizing concert.  Top-notch songwriter, one of the best guitar players on the planet, and a strong expressive voice.  No, he may not be the most lovable guy around, but his songs are true works of art. Just realized it’s September 11th.

    Never forget…

…that on this date in 1973 the CIA executed a coup against the democratically elected Allende government in Chile and installed the military junta of Pinochet.

    Not fake news or anything.

Do you have a tune commemorating this?

  2. No. But I accept the challenge. Searching…

  3. There’s also a sly Pinochet reference here:

“Can’t go left in General Pinochet’s Cadillac.”

Check out “Victor Jara of Chile” by Adrian Mitchell, as sung by Arlo Guthrie, Christy Moore, or Dick Gaughan. Gaughan added extra lyrics to the Mitchell version, giving it a little extra sting. It’s on his “Live in Edinburgh” recording.

Can’t believe I still get so angry about this.

  5. Mike Dinsmore says:

Even better still, there’s “Song for Allende,” a song written by Don Lange, and which appears on the 1975 album which he did with Doug Freeman. This is one of those “desert island discs” that for some reason has never been released on CD. The song is probably on YouTube somewhere.

  6. Mike Dinsmore says:

Just found a very scratchy and warped version of Freeman and Lange’s “Song for Allende” on YouTube. However, I also found a version of the same song by Christy Moore on YouTube. So Christy has covered both Allende/Jara songs.

    This is the winner.

Being that today is a day we should Never Forgetâ„¢, let’s remember that when someone says “socialism has never worked anywhere” we can say that beyond being untrue whatever obstacles there are for leftist governments the biggest one is having to fight a secret war against the Central Intelligence Agency of the United States.

    To wit, and recently:
