Primary Elections Results Thread-Sept. 6, 2018

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on September 6, 2018

I’m a pessimist by nature–and I’m pessimistic this evening. At least when it comes to the three key statewide races. I have the most hope for the Harris-Carper race. But the small turnout for that GOTV event last night concerns me. I’m not sure we’re quite there yet, at least not at the statewide level. Until/unless the voters most impacted by the corporate insider game revolt against it, we’ll still be a work in progress. That especially holds true for those who live in Wilmington. I hope that the results prove me totally wrong.

However, I have high hopes that several new progressive candidates will emerge tonight. In fact, I expect it. And, I have been so wrong before that I am fully prepared to eat loads o’crow. Looking forward to it, in fact.

Win or lose, Kerri Harris and Chris Johnson have emerged as progressive champions for now and for the future.  We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude…and a commitment to stand with them moving forward, win or lose.

I want to especially thank Kerri Harris for stepping up when nobody would.  Who knew that we even had a Kerri Harris in our midst? Just a wonderful person, incredibly well-grounded, and precisely the kind of citizen who would make a great Senator.  Thank you, Kerri, for stepping up.

Chris Johnson is one of the most impressive candidates I’ve ever met. My only pessimism is based on those fucking Jennings TV commercials.  LBR Syndrome all over again.  In a just world, Chris Johnson will play an integral role in Delaware’s future. I’ll be with him every step of the way.

Both Johnson and Harris, along with Eugene Young and several others, offer tremendous hope for the future. We’re on our way.

This will be the thread to share the results together and to engage in the dialogue we’ve offered here at DL for over a decade. To offer congratulations and possibly commiserations.

Now, for the results.

  1. 8:32. Bupkus. Is Mcguiness enabler Elaine Manlove juxtaposing some numbers, or something?

  2. jason330 says:

    I second all of that.

  3. Rumor has it that the results are emerging in Cyrillic lettering. Truth or fiction?

  4. 8:45 and no results? This is…not typical.

I’d better not see Ed Freel’s bespectacled mug anywhere NEAR the Department of Elections.

  5. jason330 says:

    DEMOCRATIC PARTY ; ; ; ; ;
    THOMAS R CARPER ; 24285 ; 1241 ; 25526 ; 63.19 % ;
    KERRI EVELYN HARRIS ; 14391 ; 478 ; 14869 ; 36.81 % ;

  6. jason330 says:

    Carper already at 33,000

  7. jason330 says:

Oh well. It was the longest of long shots. Yhank Kerri Harris for stepping up when nobody would. Carper is now fully exposed.

  8. SussexWatcher says:

Is Scott Walker going to win the GOP nomination for Congress? Jesus.

  9. jason330 says:

Also ARLETT. The Party of Mike Castle is no more.

  10. SussexAnon says:

    Kathy McGuiness for Auditor? Really?

  11. And just like that, a HUGE dump comes in.

Looks like Carper and Jennings have significant leads. McG has a modest lead on Davies.
Lakresha Roberts is in second in the AG race.

Darius Brown looks like he’ll win SD 2. Probably the best we could have hoped for.

Tizzy Lockman leads Jordan Hines, but it’s not soup yet.

Looks like Nnamdi will beat Potter. YES!

Bolden leads Jacobs in RD 2, and should hold on.

Sherry Dorsey Walker will win RD 3.

Kendra Johnson has skunked the field in RD 5 (Melanie George’s district). That’s an upgrade, although Alajavon would have been an upgrade as well.

Very close in RD 7. Seigfried leads with half the vote in. But, if Arden has already been counted, he may not hold on.

A surprise (to me) in RD 16. Franklin Cooke has won.

Good news in RD 17. Melissa Minor-Brown has won. An upgrade, especially on gun control issues, over Mike Mulrooney.

    More updates have come in…

  12. jason330 says:

    Go DAVE CARTER!

  14. SussexWatcher says:

    Takeaways:

A woman with $100,000 took a third of the vote against Delaware’s winningest politician with a war chest exponentially greater. That’s a ton of discontent in the Democratic Party, and Raser-Schramm and Chadderdon had better take note.

The party regulars came out in force: Carper, Jennings, McG.

How soon until Tizzy Lockman can run for something higher?

  15. …Deep cleansing breath.

Slumlord Scott Walker leads actor Lee Murphy with about 2/3 of the vote in. No doubt Rethug boneheads have confused Walker with the Wisconsin governor. They…are…stoopid.

Justin King has apparently won the R nomination to lose to Trey Paradee in SD 17.

The 7th RD is fucking close. 3 RD’s remain.

Krista Griffith looks to have defeated Rachel Blumenfeld in RD 12. She’ll face Debbie Hudson.

Guillermina Gonzalez has a modest lead in RD 22. Michael Smith leads on the R side. Still too close to call.

Sean Lynn romps in RD 31. Very good. He’ll face David Anderson, and will win reelection.

Jesse Vanderwende has won the R 35th RD nomination.

Jordyn Pusey has a 17 vote lead over Ken Woods.

David Carter has built a nice lead over Bill Powers. More to come…

  16. SussexAnon says:

    Delaware is still ‘Republican Lite’

  17. RE Vanella says:

Disappointed. But it was a real fight. I’m proud of it. I can keep my head high.

Kerri and her team are the best. Courageous. It takes real guts to do what they did. And will continue to do.

This result will never change that.

  18. Andrew C says:

Kerri Harris won’t break 36% but will still get more votes than the winning Republican today. That’s pretty cool.

  19. Ladeez and gentlemen: Delaware Rethugs have chosen slumlord Scott Walker to face Lisa Blunt Rochester. I cannot make this stuff up.

Ray Seigfried, who is not a progressive, won the 7th RD D nomination. This is depressing. I wish Joe Daigle had run a decent campaign. He would’ve blown him away.

Monique Johns has won the 9th RD D nomination. I see no reason why the result in the general should be any different than it was two years ago. A missed opportunity for the D’s.

It’s gonna be Gonzalez vs. Smith in the 22nd. Reason for optimism for the D’s? About 500 more D’s voted in the primary than R’s.

One ED remains in NCC District 1. Woods has a 20-vote lead on Pusey.

Scott Phillips will be YOUR NCC Sheriff.

  20. SussexWatcher says:

I think Chris Johnson’s showing is the biggest disappointment.

  21. Congratulations Guillermina Gonzalez — knocking on doors pays off!

  22. SussexWatcher says:

Why are there 353 districts for Senate and congress but only 350 for auditor and AG?

  23. SW: When the state House and Senate reconcile their maps, there are occasionally ED’s where there are literally no voters. So, the ED’s exist, but they don’t really exist.

BTW, David Carter has unseated Bill Powers.

  24. jason330 says:

    JORDYN PUSEY ; 1601
    KENNETH R WOODS ; 1621

    EVERY. VOTE. COUNTS.

  25. I’m especially depressed by RD 7. Ray Seigfried, who is a Charter Schools guy, wins a primary with 28.71% of the vote. He’ll be worse than Bryon Short, who was bad when it came to promoting the Chamber agenda.

  26. Pusey loses by 59 votes. Really thought she was gonna win. Don’t give up on her moving forward, she’s got real promise.

  27. Dana Garrett says:

When people won’t even do as little as vote for a better life for themselves, you learn it’s a terrible time to be alive.

  28. Peter Briccotto says:

Its official. I’m going to work my ass for Spadola. Biggest disappointment of the night.

Well fought Kerri! A little too late of the start, but impressive none the less!

    Carter – my family’s District – WOOHOO!

    Potter. Nuff Said.

Gonzalez will be an amazing addition to Delaware lawmakers!

  29. Gonna be tough to elect an R statewide when the top of the ticket is Trump’s campaign manager and a slumlord who happens to share the same name as an R governor.

If I’m Ken Simpler, I’m worried.

  30. SussexWatcher says:

Speaking of which, did anyone get to the bottom of the claims that the Dems’ treasurer nominee is a former Republican whose dad is a past Sussex GOP chair?

    • Don’t know. Who made those claims anyway? And why would it matter if it were true?

All I know is that I met her at the Arden Fair and she is seriously impressive.

  31. Kelly says:

I am so happy that Nnamdi crushed Potter. He can take his Report Card and stick it up his ASS. I am Happy for Darius Brown. Now he has more power than them Velda. 1 down and 1 to go meaning Potter’s wife is next. I am soooo happy that Dam Guy lost he is the biggest racist I ever saw. Congratulations to all the winners.

    • Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

The funny part is that after all the raises, the Wilmington Treasurer now makes enough coin that it might attract some real competition.

  32. Bane says:

Looks like Kerri added some voters to the mix, but she was unable to peel many voters away from Carper. I’m sure while there are moral victories for Kerri and progressives here, I fear that Carpertown will see 64% of the vote as a strong mandate.

    • jason330 says:

      Yeah. That part sucks.

      • RE Vanella says:

Does suck. She took on a herculean task and garnered more votes than Arlett.

I said it from the beginning. Fight hard and everywhere. Win a few. Repeat.

She should be very proud. I am. This will be a movement. Trust me. By the time the Delaware Way is ready to go to assisted living there’s going to be a large organization in place.

        • Anon says:

Every progressive with a real D challenger lost. That’s a clear statement that you need to go form your own party.

        • Joshua W says:

Kerri was a complete unknown, never worked in politics before, started her campaign eight months before the primary, she raised barely any money, and she ran against the man who practically built and controlled Democratic politics in Delaware for the past 30 years.

And yet she had him running scared, forcing him to shift to the left. She fired up so many people across the state and the nation, and brought in people who had never done any kind work of political campaigns. And in the end she turned out a huge swath of new primary voters and gave Carper the biggest primary challenge of his 40 year career.

Everyone who worked on Kerri’s campaign should be immensely proud of what they accomplished last night.

    • Hmm says:

It IS. Look I’m just as progressive if not more than you all… But de voters are DuPont retirees that’s the reality.

  33. Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

I do hope that Mr. Kowalko continues to push to find out who leaked the Grant Thornton report to the News Journal.

    • Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

      From Delawareonline.com:

John Fluharty, who works for Wagner and is the former executive director for the Delaware Republican Party, said: “Democratic voters sent a clear message to Kathleen Davies tonight.”

“Don’t go away mad, just go away.”

      Hmmm……
