Ayanna Pressley Defeats Longtime Representative Mike Capuano in MA Democratic Primary Upset – Tom Carper, You are Next

Filed in National by on September 4, 2018

In a major upset, Representative Michael Capuano has conceded to Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’s 7th District. Though results were coming in slowly and the race had yet to be called, Capuano conceded just 80 minutes after polls closed.

Pressley challenged Capuano, who has been in Congress since 1998, from the left, and the race drew comparisons to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s upset victory over Congressman Joe Crowley – particularly after Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley.

We’re coming for you Tom. You have more in common with Mitch McConnell than you have with ANY of your Delaware constituents, and you fucking flaunt it. It ends Thursday.

“In the end, Pressley will win #MA07 by 18 points. No poll showed her beating Capuano.” –Dave Weigel

I find this fact very interesting.

Her polls did. There’s a difference between public polling and polling that you pay for. Public polling is just scientific enough to call it scientific, but not scientific enough to be accurate. I keep saying this and everyone acts like I’m talking rocket science.

Public polling mostly used land lines. They over sample white voters and older voters. In February, shortly after Pressley announced her run for office, the same outlet, WBUR, noted that the majority of the district’s voters were white, even though the district’s population was minority-majority. In WBUR’s July poll, Pressley’s lead among voters ages 18-49 was eight points; among people of color in this minority-majority district, her lead was 18 points—coincidentally the margin she eventually won by. When you pay good money for a real poll with live callers, they really do a lot to dig into the data, but public polls from these organizations who spit out polls every day, are more focused on speed and web hits than accuracy.

The famous Manchester United manager Scotsman Sir Alex Ferguson used to call this “squeaky bum time”.

“People who feel seen and heard for the first time in their lives, a stakehold in democracy and a promise for our future,” she said. “That is the real victory, that is bigger than any electoral victory. And I want to thank you all for being foot soldiers in this movement and for ushering in this change.”

    THAT ALL DAY!

She wasn’t really an outsider. She is a current elected official and received endorsements from some big heavy hitters. Definitely not like Cortez.

  7. RE Vanella says:

Serious question. Why put every victory up to this type of scrutiny? It’s not the Bronx. Not really an outsider… Three way race. Florida, Minnesota… Special circumstances!

Why the need to find that one reason why it’s different? It’s interesting the need to apply this context.
