Why Isn’t John Atkins In Jail?

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on July 25, 2018

After allegedly strangling a woman earlier this month, Atkins was arrested again this week for harassing the same victim and for breaching the conditions of his release:

His punishment?:

He’s free on his own recognizance.

This man is a serial abuser of women.  He is not wired right. While many people accused of non-violent offenses languish in jail due to their inability to afford bail,  this demonstrated threat to society is permitted to roam free? To continue his dangerous course? In the interest of justice and, most especially, the safety of his victims past, present and future, he needs to be locked up. Now. Before a tragedy inevitably occurs.

  1. Alby says:

Why hasn’t Pete Schwartzkopf apologized for bringing him into the Democratic Party? Why hasn’t his questionable judgment about people he wants to convert from the GOP — looking at you, Kathy McGuiness — been challenged by the quislings under his control?

  2. jason330 says:

Laws are not written to protect us from people like John Atkins. They are written to protect people like John Atkins from consequences. against.

  3. I’m serious. He continues to harass a woman he tried to strangle. He has a history of violent episodes against women. He represents a threat to society. He violated the terms of his previous release.

Can some lawyer explain to me why he hasn’t been taken into custody and put in jail for the protection of the victim of his ongoing behavior?

  4. liberalgeek says:

Also, his guns should be seized.

  5. Alby says:

I can’t stress this enough — Pete Schwartzkopf vouched for this guy. Is that the kind of judgment you want in a Speaker of the House?

  6. Harold says:

Was it Schwartzkopf? I thought Gilligan was behind the switch.

  7. Alby says:

Gilligan was speaker, but the deal was worked out through Schwartzkopf:

“In December 2006, Atkins was forced to resign after an alleged abuse of power during a non-DUI/DWI event in Maryland that later culminated in an alleged domestic incident at his home. Then Mr. Atkins made a deal with then House Minority Whip Peter Schwartzkopf: Atkins would run for the seat as a Democrat and vote for the Democratic leadership. But then he could vote as a Republican for everything else. And vote as a Republican he has. ”

  8. Sussex Worker says:

The House Minority Whip in the 2007-2008 Session was Helene Keeley, not Schwartzkopf

Pete beat Helene for Majority Leader in 2009

The whole party made the mistake of asking Atkins to run as a Democrat but they did it because they were seeking to take control of the House- which they did

  9. Alby says:

“Pete beat Helene for Majority Leader in 2009”

With Atkins’ vote. The whole party didn’t vouch for him, Schwartzkopf did.

  10. I was still working for the House in 2008. There was, to put it mildly, a lot of concern in the Caucus as to what Atkins’ impact would be. Probably the greatest concern was that there would be a 21-20 split in the House, with Atkins being #21. As it turned out, the D’s took a comfortable majority, and Atkins was not in the position to dictate everything the Caucus could do.

Nevertheless, it was a cynical and amoral ploy on the part of Schwartzkopf. It ranks right up there as Pete’s worst decision, along with his cutting a deal with the Senate R’s and shutting his Caucus out of the budget negotiations a couple of years ago.

Man whatcha all worried bout. John’s a gold ole southern boy who just trying to settle a personal matter between hiself and a woman who don’t know her place. Y’all just let these little squabbles go and forget bout seizing our guns too. Y’all just crazy

  12. Kevin Ohlandt says:

This is Delaware. We still have Patrick Miller doing his theft of state funding going on at his local fire company after pillaging through Brandywine and Indian River School District.

  13. He’s now in jail. Being held on $18,000 cash-only bail:

I really hope that I had something to do with this.

  14. XDem says:

Some dumb bastards don’t know when to quit. What a jerk! Schwartzkopf has crap all over his duplicitous face.

  15. AQC says:

I think it was more because the dumbass contacted her again. These are the kind of guys that kill women. He needs to stay in jail.

  16. Alby says:

Didn’t he used to drop in for visits at SCI with his son? Maybe he knew he’d have to break out someday.

  17. Yes he did. Maybe he just wanted to make sure his son would visit him. Or maybe he slipped him a key, just in case.
