July 10 Open Thread: It Could Have Been Worse. Maybe

Filed in Delaware, Featured, National by on July 10, 2018

At least one right-winger wanted an all-out culture war, and so was hoping that Trump would nominate Amy Coney Barrett.  I’m sorry, you can read all the tea leaves in search of hopeful signs, but Kavanaugh will push the Court rightward. A good day to call Carper and Coons’ offices, and contribute to Kerri Harris’ campaign.

Here is a real good collection of the ‘best’ reporting on Kavanaugh from the indispensable Pro Publica.

Judge rules that Trump Administration can’t detain children indeterminately.  From the ruling: “”It is apparent that Defendants’ Application is a cynical attempt…to shift responsibility to the Judiciary for over 20 years of Congressional inaction and ill-considered Executive action that have led to the current stalemate.”  If the D’s somehow get control of the Senate, Rule #1 must be: No approval of any judicial nominees.

Agree it could have been worse, Amy Coney Barrett would have given the Evangelicals a foot hold on the court, as opposed to the current Catholic majority. The real fun begins when they try to overturn Roe vs. Wade, but in the meantime the court is a rubber stamp for big business and the Republican party.

  2. Ben says:

Roe V Wade is as good as overturned. THe next GOP push will be for enough governors and state houses to pass an amendment. This also guarantees that trmp will not be removed from office.

  3. Dana Garrett says:

Trump chose Kavanaugh for one reason. He’s for making the president immune from prosecution while he’s in office.

  4. RE Vanella says:

Tour de France is on. Les Bleus are in the final. And Al’s on the coast of Brittany.

    Fucking hell.

  5. Bill B says:

If the new court with Kavanaugh does overturn or severely restrict Roe I’ll be the first to come back and say I was wrong. But I don’t believe they’ll touch it. Why? $$$$ The GOP has raked in millions for years from the suckers who want freedom to end where the uterus begins. They’ve had chances to move on Roe legislatively and have never made a serious effort. If the Court gets rid of Roe what will Republicans use to fundraise?

  6. RE Vanella says:

Saw this anonymously on the internet. It’s a very important concept many people don’t seem to understand. So here it is:

    ………………………….

I don’t think all cops are bad because of the actions of a few.

I know all cops are ‘bad’ because all cops, as a condition of their employment, swear to enforce all laws, including laws which are unjust and initiate violence on peaceful people. It’s the job they are sworn to do. Pledging to suspend morality and logic in order to unquestioningly impose on another person the will of psychopaths and sociopaths is morally unacceptable.

So yes, all cops are bad, but not because of the actions of the few. Good people exist, and there are cops that are otherwise good people, but there are no good cops.

    ………………

    It’s perfectly clear.

  7. Paul says:

That’s a very 60s view of cops. I like it because it fits.

  8. Alby says:

The reason all cops are not to be trusted is that the good ones cover for the bad ones.

How ironic that right-wingers blather constantly about “tyranny” without recognizing it in their midst. The danger isn’t from federal troops, which are not used inside the U.S., but from the thousands of local police forces who are never held to account by their supposed overseers, the civilians who run the government.

  9. Alby says:

@REV: Lloris is a national hero today.

  10. CinqueB says:

You know what is really going to be fun? President Trump nominating ACB to replace RBG. Chew on that one for awhile.

  11. Alby says:

    Why would that be fun?

  12. AntiIrrational says:

“I know all cops are ‘bad’ because all cops, as a condition of their employment, swear to enforce all laws,…”

    “It’s perfectly clear.”

It is perfectly clear that you (i.e.: many of the posters) do not want a civil society based on a system Laws designed for the common good. Law enforcement personnel are tasked with dealing with likes of some of these posters, who don’t believe the laws should apply to them. HOWEVER, God forbid, someone runs a red light and ruins your Lexus. Then all bets are off and the individual should hang.

Yet again, DL and its posters display an arrogance, hypocrisy, and truly astonishing lack of intellectual honesty about the rule of law. You’ve mentioned ‘tyranny’ but fail to understand the tyrannical left’s desire to dictate terms when it suits them. You want individual liberties and rights strictly adhered to when they apply to Liberal ideologies but not when they are conservative ideologies. Free speech?? Only when the Left says so. Civil liberties?? Only when the left says so. Open discussions?? Only when the left allows it. Antifa, the protestors that shout down opposing views, violent protests calling for or inciting harassment, weaponizing the IRS and FBI.

Law enforcement’s JOB is to enforce laws your representatives have passed. You like it when it enforces rules you like, but when it enforces laws you don’t like, Police are bad?? My gawd people, have you no shame. Go to some lawless 3rd world country if you don’t like police or law enforcement here. What do you think happens when there are no police who enforce the law??

But it’s Trumper’s, Tea partiers and right wing ilk that are blind to tyranny?? The irony is incredible.

Here is your truth. SCOTUS, as the highest court in the land, should reflect the highest level of adherence to the laws as written. Not as ‘interpreted’, AS WRITTEN. Roe V Wade was a gymnastics exercise to tolerate the termination of an inconvenient pregnancies. By any measure, it is the killing of an INNOCENT human life. Liberal ideology speaks volumes of the “unethical” death penalty of CRIMINALS but an innocent potential human life, that a woman failed to take precautions to prevent, is just a collections of cells to eject?? I would gladly pay taxes to provide guaranteed pregnancy prevention for millions of women before endorsing the financial support for fetus killing. But that’s just me. Women’s right to choose exists before getting pregnant. Why can’t women exercise their rights BEFORE? We can pass laws to make you wear a seatbelt before driving. Why can’t we pass laws to require women use pregnancy prevention before getting fertilized?

REV: Antiirrationalist sounds mostly like a fool, but I still have to ask . . . Who’s your favorite anarchist?

  14. RE Vanella says:

    tl;dr

Fuck the police. For the reasons I said.

If you believe “ciivil society” relies on doing violence on peaceful people because of “the law” you can choke on my scrote.

    Anonymous coward.

  15. nathan arizona says:

REV: I like this Seattle guy, but don’t really think he’s an anarchist. I thought you might go with Bakunin.

  16. RE Vanella says:

    Name drop!

(… I knew you wanted a philosopher or writer, some academic, scholarly show. I refuse….)

Sorry, bro. No offense. Not interested right now. Maybe some other time.

    Football’s coming home….

  17. RE Vanella says:

In the interest of full disclosure…

My first thought was Sacco and Vanzetti.

  18. nathan arizona says:

REV: No problem. I was just kind of interested in the philosophical underpinnings of your ideas (and maybe ribbing you a little). I’m sure you have them. But I realize it’s not something most people give a shit about –especially if they’re hanging on every play of the World Cup!

  19. mouse says:

The standing army is only an arm of the standing government

The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it
