When Gram Parsons was fired from the Byrds, he, along with Chris Hillman, who had had a hand in his firing (Parsons said he wouldn’t tour in South Africa b/c of apartheid, but he was also terrified of flying and had a serious drug problem), formed the Flying Burrito Brothers.  In many ways, The Gilded Palace Of Sin is the logical successor to Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. I like what Gram Parsons was trying to do, and the songwriting is great, but man I hate pedal steel. It can work well as an occasional well-placed accent, but I can’t stand the obligatory curlicues on every bar. Totally non-inspired and a distraction from the song.
