Song Of The Day: May 14, 2018

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on May 14, 2018

You say you want women with attitude? Howzabout Beyonce and the Dixie Chicks showing the big-hat Country Music Association how it’s done? In a song about a gun-lovin’ drunk of a father?

Still disappointed you censored my poll question. Pretty weak. I know they get a safe space there, but here to?

(Please don’t tell me some cockamamie story about blog rules or civility. You’ll just embarrass everyone.)

  2. RE Vanella says:

Hmm. Guess it was Al or Jason.

I wrote a funny poll dunking on Blue Delaware but it got pulled down.

Based on Jason’s bit about arguing with Democrats, etc…

(I apologize for assuming it was you. My bad.)

  3. Jason330 says:

I didn’t pull anything down that wasn’t mine.

Since I jammed this thread up with bullshit I’ll make a music related note.

Yesterday I splurged. Brought two old records.

Sonny Boy Williamson – “Real Folk Blues” original Chess pressing (1965)
Lightin’ Hopkins – “Smokes Like Lightin'” original Bluesville pressing (1963)

Both near perfect condition. Doesn’t look like they were every played. Original sleeve and liners.

  5. RE Vanella says:

    Fucking Al. Puss.

Poll question was do the folk at BD know their politics are garbage.

    Aware
    Oblivious

Dum Dum liberal politics like theirs will get us all killed.

It was in the It Must Be Election Season thread.

  6. Al is the LEAST likely of us to avoid that kind of confrontation. Me? It seems like the only time that they attract commenters over there is when Al and Jason comment. I don’t bother.

    Why give them free pub?

  7. RE Vanella says:

    I’m blocked. 🙂

  8. nathan arizona says:

I was hoping this would be a Beyonce-free zone.

  9. RE Vanella says:

Oh, and the reason? Neoliberal half-measures need to be mocked and crushed or we are never going to get anywhere politically. That’s why it’s important to point out that politics like that are why we are in the current dangerous situation so I fail to see how it gets us out.

The combination of sanctimony, certitude and stupidity are not helpful and bad and should be called out.

  10. Alby says:

@REV: It wasn’t me. All I know how to do is type.

Those records are quite the score. Where did you find them, if you don’t mind me asking?

For the record, I love real blues, I just don’t like the happy, honky-tonk kind, which should have a different name because the people playing it don’t sound mournful in the least. If the singer ain’t bitchin’, it ain’t blues.

  11. Alby says:

@nathan: I feel the same way about Beyonce I do about all musical acts from Madonna to Iggy Pop: Put some fucking clothes on and sing.

  12. nathan arizona says:

I’ve lately been getting into the “other” great bluesman whose last name is James: Skip. Earlier than Elmore and different, as I’m sure you know. Neither had to strut around half-naked.

  13. RE Vanella says:

    Squeezbox Records
11th St between Lincoln and Union
    old Parisi carpet warehouse.

Talk to Rich. He’s building a museum in there, for real.

He’s got pre war blues 78s that are really collectors items. I don’t even have the equipment to play them though.

Also, he has a repair shop contact and used gear so if your old stuff needs a little love or you need a new amp, Rich is your man.

  14. RE Vanella says:

El Som specifically, you should go meet Rich. He threw a block party Saturday with 6 bands, food, beer, etc. Probably going to do another one in the fall.

I reserved comment on this for a full day. While both camps may have attitude, I believe it is a collaboration that was spawned in hell, with no one benefiting.
