Delaware Political Weekly: April 20-26, 2018

1. Melissa Minor-Brown To Challenge Mike Mulrooney in RD 17. Well, they certainly differ on gun control issues. Mulrooney is proud of his association with the NRA,  generally supports the NRA position on gun measures. Brown does not.  Melissa Minor-Brown is listed as an RN with the VA.  So, I hope that the new candidate has navigated that whole Federal employee thingy. Unlike Rev. Brandt. Assuming that she has, this could be a race to watch.  While I personally like Mike Mulrooney, I think he’s a pretty vulnerable candidate.  Very solid with the construction trades as a union electrician, but it remains to be seen how far that union support extends.  The 17th RD runs from the heart of William Penn HS country south along the river through New Castle. A solid D district, 9917 D; 2615 R; and 3688 I. Whoever wins the D primary will win the general election.

2. Fresh Air On NCC Council? Sure looks that way. Longtime community activist David Carter is challenging Bill Powers in Council District 6.  Both Carter and Powers agree on one issue: The below-the-canal district has been under-served.  Which raises the obvious question: Who is better-equipped to address the situation? The  guy who has been on County Council since 2006 and still presides over this underserved district, or someone with genuine success in community organizing w/o the same track record of failure? Along with Jordyn Pusey, who is challenging ‘Son Of A Hack’ Councilman Kenneth Woods in Elsmere-based District 1, we could be looking at a serious upgrade on Council.

3. Fresh Air On County Council-Part Deux? Wait, there’s more.  Dee Durham,  who is one of Delaware’s most effective environmental leaders, is poised to challenge, wait for it, Bob Weiner in Brandywine Hundred-based CD 2.  Nancy Willing wrote the definitive profile on Dee Durham back in 2014.  County Council has a no more diligent self-promoter than Bob Weiner, and he won’t be easy to beat. But a good government D like Durham is probably the best candidate to take on the challenge. Especially with her grassroots organizing skills. She can attract some traditional R’s in the mold of, say Andrew Knox and Liane Sorenson, and significant portions of the district are represented by D’s like Debra Heffernan, Bryon Short and Sean Matthews.  Durham previously ran in a D primary for State Senate District 4 way back in 2008, where she lost in a primary to Michael Katz.  More than a few people are sick of Weiner’s grandstanding and his capacity to use up all the oxygen in any room he enters. One never knows when one’s time in political office is up.  This could be that time.

4. Three-Way Primary in RD 7. Larry Lambert is poised to enter the race, and will face Joe Daigle and Ray Seigfried (and perhaps others?) in a primary to succeed the retiring Rep. Bryon Short. I need my spies to fill in some details on Lambert. I know that he lives in Claymont, has been deeply involved in the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Delaware, and that he was an enthusiastic supporter of Eugene Young for Mayor. Sounds good to me. Three candidates who…don’t suck. Details, pipples, I need details.

5. Filing(s). Kent County Levy Court Commissioner At-Large Terry Pepper (D).

That’s it for this week. What’d I miss, and whaddayathink?

Dave Carter and Jordyn Pusey are inspiring me to think about runing against my do nothing NC Council member – Bill Bell.

    Powers really is terrible.

  2. TonyDem says:

Jason – that would be awesome!!!!!!! Do it!!!!

  3. Joshua W says:

I agree with Tony, this is something you should definitely do, Jason. We need a better, more progressive county council now more then ever.

  4. Mitch Crane says:

I hope this doesn’t hurt your chances ;), but you are a person with strong convictions and integrity, even if sometimes wrong. You should step up.

  5. JWM212 says:

Please do. Bell is totally useless. Shows up for a few photo ops and nothing else. Doesn’t respond to constituents.

  6. Alby says:

Bell got the job as councilman after years on the county payroll as Gordon’s “liaison” with volunteer fire companies.

If you’re running, jason, better join a volunteer fire company pronto.

  7. chris says:

Good that Bob Weiner finally getting a challenge …….about time.
