Confederate re-enactors get shut out of Dover Days Festival
DOVER — One side of the Civil War’s combatants won’t be represented at the 85th annual Dover Days Festival this year, but hopes to tell its story again in 2019.
Since the Mason-Dixon Guards Camp 2183 couldn’t confirm its nonprofit status to Kent County Tourism Corporation’s specifications, the Confederate re-enactors weren’t permitted to take part without registering instead as a vendor.
That wouldn’t work for the Ellendale-based organization, according to Camp Commander Robert Eldreth, since the living history area needed could not fit into the asphalt area that organizers offered for the May 5 event.
“Our display was not conducive to what was being offered,” Mr. Eldreth said. “There would be no place for the tents and everything that comes with the camp scene, so being in a vendor spot wasn’t possible.”
Golly, what a shame. Now people will just have to use their imaginations to find a bunch of white losers fighting for their right to stop progress. Oh, wait…
Wait a minute, can you necessarily ascribe Confederate beliefs or sympathy to the people playing the Confederates in Civil War reenactments? I always figured these things were about as political as a Renaissance Faire.
Back when everyone bought the Southern BS about the war maybe.
But I get your point. I was actually back and forth a little on calling them racists but ended up thinking that yes – if your hobby is going around upholding Southern honor – you are a racist.
If you want to be a civil war buff, fine. If you really want to represent the south put yourself in chains and tie yourself to a tree.

Last time I checked there were Union re-enactors out there. Are you suggesting that people who sympathize with the North would rather portray someone on the Southern side? I’m afraid I’ll have to ask for some evidence of such people before I swallow that codswallop.
Well, someone has to play the bad guy in order for the Union re-enactors to do their thing, right?
I’ve only known two actual re-enactors: neighbors of about 20 years ago. Travelled all over the country to do this. They were eccentric and much more interested in the minutia and details of the uniforms and other aspects of the material culture, along with accurately re-enacting the quotidian aspects of camp life like cooking, than they were in the political history or even the military science. I have no idea what side they played, though, or whether it was fixed or changed from battle to battle.
But my guess is, if the roles are fixed and those neighbors lived in or moved to an area where the only “brigade” was devoted to portraying the other side, they’d still have joined. I’m afraid that’s all the evidence I can provide.
Edited to add: What do you know, from 1992 to 2002 Denmark had Civil War re-enactments with only a Confederate side, so I guess it can be done:

Most people I know who study the South in the Civil War have ancestors who fought on that side. My kids have ancestors who fought on that side. But I think you have to have some sympathy to want to do it, even if it’s just of the “product of their times” sort. That’s still sympathy.
The Renaissance Faire might be more popular if they re-enacted the War of the Roses.
Maybe they can get tank commander costumes and drive panzers into Smryna.

Perhaps the Confederate re-enactors could re-enact the surrender at Appomattox, or stand at attention for a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and Lincoln’s second inaugural address and salute the Lincoln re-enactor.
Also…If they convince a bunch of African American buddies to chain themselves up, wear rags, and stand around to be berated and abused, that would add some authenticity.
Our class went on a field trip to Gettysburg back in middle school. I’m trying to see if Ia can picture what I remember of the Union reenactors charging and riding and shooting at absolutely nothing.
It’s called a “historical reenactment”, so I guess it all depends on the level of historical accuracy you prefer.
I like the level of historical accuracy that doesn’t downplay or diminsh slavery. The very level of historical accuracy, in other words, that Confederate dressup guys hate.

Yes. With all of the historical accuracy they can muster without mentioning that the “cause” they are so devoted to was the continuation of slavery.

Those reenactments are boring anyway, even when there are two sides. I can only imagine what a snooze fest a one sided reenactment will be.
