The Illinois version of Tom Carper may well lose his primary

Filed in National by on March 19, 2018

Representative Dan Lipinski is a House version of Tom Carper. His voting record is pro-Trump (like Carper’s) in a district that is solidly Democratic (like Carper’s). Betting markets currently have him as the underdog. I hope that holds.

Rep. Dan Lipinski, a conservative-leaning Democrat unaccustomed to close elections, came to make his pitch at the St. Patrick’s Day party for seniors just as the retirees finished their corned beef and cabbage.

Before the seniors got to their dessert, the veteran lawmaker facing a liberal insurgency brewing in his party touted his commitment to bringing federal dollars to the district.

  1. That is my “home” Congressional district in the Chicago suburbs.
In fact, both Lipinski and his primary challenger are in my high school district (Lyons Township, LaGrange & Western Springs, IL)
Although I see the parallel you’re trying to bring up, for the record, Lipinski is much more conservative than Carper.

Have you asked the Democratic Chair of Sussex County how she feels about Tom’s candidacy in lieu of his recent vote to take away the authority of the Comsumer Financial Protection Bureau to curtail banks from using racial profiling to block African-Americans from getting loans just like in the bad old days of institutional racism?

Thanks for commenting AL. You must be following the anti-Trump AG primary going on in Illinois right now: https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/18/illinois-attorney-general-race-democrats-trump-469753

It raises the question – Does “conservative” mean anything to anyone anymore? The parties appear to be the “Sees Trump as a Normal President” Party and the “Sees Trump as a Threat to the Republic” Party.

In that sense, Carper and Lapinski are in lockstep.

Lipinski is not just a DINO he’s a not so stealthy Republican, he also inherited a dynasty from his father who was no better. Will do the victory dance if he loses the primary. I certainly understand the concept of take no chances in November, but this turd must be flushed.

Jason: I think you might be right about what the two parties are these days, but are you suggesting that Carper is of the “Trump Is a Normal President” faction? I’m no Carper fan, but being cozy with banks and corporations doesn’t put him in that group (or in the left wing of the party either, of course). There’s a difference between a pro-business moderate and an authoritarian/fascist. Or maybe you weren’t saying what I thought you were saying.

Yes. Carper is in the “Trump Is a Normal President” camp. He is an accommodationist. I haven’t seen him use his position in the Senate to do anything in to resist Trump.

Unless you are talking about fighting to give banks more ….I don’t see any fight in him at all.

Jason: You’re not leaving much room in the “Trump as Threat to the Republic” party. If it came to a pitched battle, I’m pretty sure Carper would not take the side of the fascists. I think Carper would vote for impeachment if it came to that (I hope I hope, despite the turd who would replace him). And I believe his voting record has been anti-Trump on the whole. Should he leading a coup? I’m pretty sure he would be a coup follower, though not a leader, if/when that time comes. Or at least he wouldn’t get in the way of it. Progressives alone aren’t going to bring down Trump and what he stands for, although I’d be happy enough to be proven wrong about that.

David Letterman once said he was pretty sure he lived next door to the Kuplotters back in Indiana.
