GOP’s Tax “reform” lays an egg as a campaign issue

Filed in National by on March 14, 2018

I hadn’t tracked on the fact that the GOP was thinking that their clusterfuck “tax cut” scam was going to be a big vote getter.

But it became evident a few weeks ago that Republican messaging on the (the tax “reform” clusterfuck) wasn’t working the way the party hoped. (go figure) Outside GOP groups, which had poured nearly $11 million into the race ― much of it on advertising the tax law ― suddenly shifted tactics. Instead of touting their signature legislative achievement, Republicans began airing scary-sounding ads about immigrants, and attacking Democrat Conor Lamb’s record as a prosecutor. One GOP ad accused Lamb of allowing “gun runners” to avoid jail time and “walk free.” It’s a well-worn playbook, one that Republicans used to turn out their base last year in gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey.

Yep, the Republicans are all “true believers” when it comes to the tax cut game. Not that they think it will benefit anyone but the rich, it’s that they think the electorate will buy it one more time. Not this time, their running out of fools, old and young, to buy their trash. And damned if it didn’t take long enough.

Faith base… true believers…. Don’t expect them to move off tax cut magical thinking any time soon. Larry Kudlow is a TV personality best know for his bedrock faith in the notion that tax cuts will work if they are ever REALLY cut low enough and for long enough.

The other tactic that didn’t work was the Pelosi boogeyman. Much has been made of Lamb’s claim that he doesn’t support her, much less has been made of the fact that GOP ads tied him to her anyway. Which ads do you think these bubble-dwellers heard, Saccone’s claims or Lamb’s denials? Two weeks ago Republicans themselves admitted that argument wasn’t working, so ignore anything they’re saying now. Today’s lies are for the choir.

To the chagrin of the punditariat, the vast majority of the voting public has very little idea who Nancy Pelosi is. Half can’t name the Vice President at any given time.

Good point. $11 million is nothing for the VRWC to set ablaze trying to make Pelosi history’s greatest Hitler (greater even than history’s actual Hitler). Go for it guys!

What I like it that the VRWC’s coffers are going to be spread mighty thin this coming November.
