Wilson’s impatience rankles GOP
Reading the seething between the lines of his Facebook post, it is clear that Dave Burris is pretty pissed off at David Wilson. I’m not sure what effect that anger adds up to in the race to replace Simpson in the State Senate. Maybe it amounts to nothing, but Milford’s well-liked Mayor, Bryan Shupe, seems more like a candidate more in the Burris mold. Who knows…Maybe Wilson saw the writing on the wall, and decided to the early announcement was worth the risk?
Word of his impending retirement quickly spread through political circles on Friday after state Rep. David Wilson, R-Bridgeville, filed his candidacy for the seat.
Simpson, 70, said he had planned to announce his decision after the General Assembly reconvenes in March, something he told Wilson and only a few others.
There are only two, count ’em, two ED’s from Wilson’s Rep. District in Simpson’s Senate district. He had nothing to gain by doing this. And plenty to lose.
Stupid is as stupid does.
This is embarrassing for these people and their families. Very sad.

Of course Wilson ha pissed people off, and for no good reason UNLESS he knew Simpson was going to announce and simultaneously endorse a successor candidate like Shupe. Then the field would have been effectively blocked, so he went for broke. Just a possibility.
My money is on the mayor. Young, telegenic, well-spoken, small businessman, record of accomplishment, and buddies and former business partners with Dave Burris. Yep, he’s running.

The photo of Wilson’s filing has Rep. Harvey Kenton standing behind him, meaning Harvey is fully on board with bigfooting Simpson’s dignified retirement announcement.
Look for Sussex Register of Wills Cindy Green to run for Wilson’s seat. Her term is up this year, so she’d have to give up a safe and easy job to run, but it would be worth it to her to bring her religious nutjob perspective to Dover. Green would be a less polished version of Nicole Theis, anti-abortion, anti-gay, pro-Jesus all the way, no compromises.
Good stuff, SW. If only the moribund D’s were in position to take political advantage of the apparent GOP rifts. The Simpson district is not a lost cause for the D’s, any word on who, if anybody, might emerge for the Democrats?
Sussex Dems are a tight lipped bunch when it comes to strategy and the Delaware way. The R’s can not keep quiet about anything. Wilson as a Senator? Not nearly enough polish or deep thought, but that has yet to stop anyone from being elected to their highest level of tolerable incompetence.
OK, I’ve got it figured out now. I think we’ve gotten it backwards. Burris works for the Senate R’s, right? With Simpson planning to retire, they concocted a scenario where Simpson would pass the torch to that towheaded guy from Milford.
Understandably, IMHO, some legislators resented being cut out from consideration and decided to take matters into their own hands. Hence, the Wilson candidacy. And Kenton standing with him.
I think we’re blaming the wrong people. They had every right to revolt against the Burris/Simpson/Shupe plan. Burris is pissed b/c he can’t herd cats. And Simpson is not a victim, he was a co-conspirator.
BTW, Waterpirate? I think ‘tight lipped’ is code for ‘haven’t got a clue’.

Taking my scenario a step further. Burris works for the Senate R’s, right? He and Simpson concocted this succession plan. I’m sure that Senators Pettyjohn and Richardson must be THRILLED that they might have to take sides in a primary battle. Burris works for them, too. Or, like Debra Allen, is he merely a mistress to one master?
Well, it looks like Sussex Dem Vice-Chair Greg Fuller, aka He Who Has Never Won An Election, lives in the 18th. So that’s a guaranteed failure.
El Som, your scenario is spot-on. It’s going to be nasty unless someone comes in and mediates. But I’d put Wilson ahead in the primary based solely on his name recognition and personal popularity.

Simpson and Wilson have been plotting this for 2 years. Something changed Simpson’s mind. Now Dave is getting his revenge for losing Simpson’s endorsement. That’s my theory.

Sussex is red. And as long as Sussex has the rest of the state to pay (or heavily subsidize) for roads, parks, bridges, schools, police, first responders, you know, everything, they will continue to vote that way in their magical land of make believe.
It is more clan than party. Maybe not today, but Milford is movable.
