Dems folded a losing hand on DACA

Filed in National by on January 23, 2018

You remember the Overton window, right? Well, it has moved. 538 reports that Trump has moved the debate on immigration so far to the right that Democrats are now scrambling for some crumbs that were not even considered controversial when immigration reform was last considered in congress.

Let’s be honest. The Overton window was moved by Trump working hand in glove with “centrist” Democrats like Chris Coons who never seem to have a plan other than retreat. At some point we need to ask, how does Trump seem to consistently “win” the PR war against Democrats even when he is taking “unpopular” positions?

DACA case is a good case study.

“Immigrants who were brought to the country as children, who have played by the rules, should be the LAST in line to be deported.”

That’s basically all DACA says. And yet, using the right wing noise machine, Trump and the GOP are able to make DACA a synonym for “illegal, bloodthirsty, rapist and murderers”. As in “Why is the Democrat Party putting our military families at peril to defend these DACA illegal immigrants, many of who are bloodthirsty, rapist and murderers?”

The GOP messaging is absurd on its face, and yet the “Democrat Party” has no response. No response other that what Coons said on ‘Morning Joe’ this morning, which was something to the effect of:

C’mon. Democrats are stuck with people like me. Who else are Democrats going to vote for? Republicans?

I’ll get the exact quote soon, but that paraphrase is pretty close.

Coons

Chris Coons spent four years as president of the New Castle County Council getting beat up on by friggin’ Tom Gordon.
    That’s right, Tom Gordon.
And now we expect him to stand up to people with real power?
    Who are we kidding?

By the time Dems like Coons are done “negotiating” on behalf of people who are registered in the DACA program, they’ll be lucky to not be in concentration camps.

    From Josh Marshall:

For those who watch politics constantly and are consumed by internal dramas and squabbles about Democratic ‘toughness’ and bad strategy, this is either a deflating defeat or a confirmation of pre-existing intra-party critiques. Democrats lost. Democrats weak, Trump strong! The reality is that very few people whose opinions of things are not set in stone are even paying attention to the optics of all this. The policy question – settling the Dreamers issue – is very important. But that remains to be decided as much as it was before. Get up, dust yourself off and realize that this is a skirmish in a larger political battle which will come to a head again in three short weeks.
