Leaving the Rails Far Behind

Filed in National by on January 11, 2018

The Trump train jumped the tracks today, as an immigration meeting at the White House prompted him to ask the gathered senators, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” He was referring to Haiti and Africa. It did not go unnoticed. The Washington Post included the word “shithole” in its front-page headline.

Anyone still think he finishes out his term?

  1. MSNBC also used the term ‘shithole’.

Somewhere, George Carlin nods his head in approval.

  2. ScarletWoman says:

I don’t know; feeling very pessimistic today. The normalization of this stuff continues apace, and Congress seems to be in a coma. I now believe he could expose himself on Fifth Avenue, take a dump, AND shoot Santa Claus and nothing would happen.

  3. mediawatch says:

I’m waiting for the response from the Shithole Caucus of the United Nations, AKA the majority of the UN General Assembly. With no effort at all, Little Rocket Man may have just won himself dozens of allies.

  4. Ben says:

Keep dreaming. There is no logical reality in which the GOP takes him out. Their base has total control. Those pig fuckers love this stuff.
There is also no way Dems get enough power to do him in. He finisnes his term and we’re Damon lucky if the dems don’t run Biden/Booker and throw another election.

  5. Liberal Elite says:

The problem is that Trump is turning America into a shithole country.

Things that happen in shithole countries that Trump trying to do here:

    Infrastructure is crumbling
Pollution laws are gutted and/or ignored
Natural resources are exploited and environment badly fouled in the process
Tribalism is rampant as a proxy for patriotism.
People are exploited and robbed by large corporations… goes unchecked.
Gini index of income inequality is high and increasing
Censorship and exploitation replaces net neutrality
The press is censored and denigrated
Laws are exploited to attack political opponents
    Racism is encouraged and promoted
    Healthcare is substandard and exploitive
Human rights are ignored and abused
Courts are stacked with partisans and sycophants
    Underemployment is high and increasing
Lower and middle classes bear the bulk of the tax load
Corporate pork and rent seeking is rampant
Taxpayer money is wasted on the worst sort of programs.

Yes. That’s right. Trump is doing ALL of the above.
That’s his “Make America a Shithole” campaign.

This list also apply to Russia and North Korea and other shithole countries.

  6. Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

I think Ben is correct and there are people celebrating this as we speak. I would call this a dog whistle but it’s more like someone screaming “Here boy!” at the top of his lungs.

  7. jason330 says:

“The problem is that Trump is turning America into a shithole country.”

The GOP is an explicitly racist organization. It has been an implicitly racist organization since Nixon. Maybe is some way this is progress?

No voter can deny what they are voting for.

  8. The new generation of racists is smaller than the old generation of racists.

    That’s also progress.

  9. jason330 says:

The Queen of England explicitly wants nothing to do with Trump. That’s progress too, I suppose.

  10. bamboozer says:

Older than most of you and well remember the racism of the past, dramatically more virulent than it is today and very much out in the open. And that was growing up on Long Island, not Mississippi. There are still lots of racists here, many in denial but more than a few unrepentant ones as well. As for the Republicans they secured the racist vote during the Civil Rights Era and have held fast ever since. Trump the Dotard, as ever a lawyers nightmare of a client, merely gives voice to what far too many are thinking.

  11. mouse says:

The problem being that type of comment fits exactly into the mentality of 30 some percent of the voting public who don’t distinguish between yucking it up and bonding with their red necked buddies and appropriate behavior for a world leader.

  12. RE Vanella says:

Theresa… Theresa… Come get your boy! He’s not coming. He’s wet his nappy!

  13. Homesteader says:

Liberal Elite- excellent comment! You hit the nail right on the head.

  14. Dana Garrett says:

Yeah, I still think Trump finishes his term. That he is a racist and bigot isn’t news. It was known while he ran for office from the things he said about people from Middle Eastern countries and the exposes about how his real estate practices discriminated against prospective African American tenants. Besides, Republican lawmakers don’t depend on “minority” voters for their support in any case. A bigoted president doesn’t harm their status. In some cases, it could help them.

  15. Ben says:

The first 8 months of this year will be all about winning primaries for the shithole party.
After that, it is making sure people dont forget HOW they won said primaries.

  16. Alby says:

I’m not suggesting he screwed up by calling them shithole countries, or demonstrating his racism. As Dana says, we already knew that.

I take it as a sign of further decline because he said it in front of Democrats, who are not invested in covering for him. To stay in office he’s going to have to hide his mental decline, and that won’t be possible if he says shit like this in front of his enemies.

  17. Ben says:

Alby, I want you to be right, but what does his removal from office look like to you?

Are you putting your faith in his cabinet or Republicans in congress?

  18. jason330 says:

RE Vanella, Thanks for that. I have a new love in my life – Artist Taxi Driver

  19. Alby says:

Ben: Answer cloudy. Ask again later.

Wait, that was the Magic 8-Ball answer. What I see is the clamor growing so loud that it can’t be ignored. I can’t predict how all parties will react to that. I also can’t predict what’s going to happen with the Russia probe, or when all the money-laundering stuff will become so obvious that a clamor will start about that. All I’m going on is how much the public is exposed to these stories across a range of media, and the tone and tenor of public reaction. I also go by what the public is reading on the internet (as opposed to social media, which thrives on real-time conflict among users). The more headlines are devoted to political stories (vs. Beyonce et al), the more it’s penetrating.

I don’t know how much you or others subject yourselves to conservative media, but they are now like the little Dutch boy who’s run out of fingers to plug all the holes in the dike. This reminds me of the experience the Mormons had with the internet: The exposure to the outside world caused a significant number to reject the propaganda they were raised on.

There are a lot of different worlds out there, and the Trumpsters only inhabit two or three of them.

  20. Ben says:

I wish I shared your optimism. This is the same GOP that MADE trump. They are him now. You’re suggesting they slit their own throats. I happen to support that… metaphorically and literally, but they are cowards and it wont happen. At this point, I lean slightly toward thinking he wont get re-elected… then down the memory hole he’ll go. Fucking morons in this country forgot about W, they’ll forget about the Shithead.

  21. Alby says:

I don’t think it’s accurate to say the party made him, at least not on purpose. Nobody in what I would describe as “the party” wanted him to win.

Fox made him — that’s where he learned all the shibboleths for his rallies, the phrases that triggered the mob responses. The way the politicians thought it worked was that they used Fox. What they found out the hard way is that Fox used them. The other 16 candidates treated Fox as a tool to get their message out. Trump acted as a megaphone for the message Fox was putting out already – naturally voters were more in tune with him. He was more in tune with them.

As I said elsewhere to Dana, the mental decline over the first year makes it highly doubtful they’ll be able to credibly prop him up that long.

  22. ben says:

You keep saying that, but they keep proping harder.
And there is basically nothing left of the GOP you claim didnt want him. They may be unpopular nationally, but the “people” who vote in GOP primaries jsut let out a “Heellll yeah!” when they heard the shithole remark…. they THEN took up Master’s talking point and are saying the media made it up. They are hopeless sacks of shit, all of em… And every last member of congress will ultimately bow to them, or lose the primary to a Roy Moore clone. I think if you really thought about it, you know deep down. They have 0 incentive to even look like they are breaking from him until late september, and will go back to “normal” after the election no matter the outcome.

  23. ben says:

Let’s say a miracle happens and the Dems take back both houses, but dont have enough votes to kick him out on party lines…. even THEN moderate fucks like Carper will get all squishy about the lack of bipartisanship…. Do you honestly think the GOP will go along with it? Back to their base. Back to the noble stand of the white trash. He probably loses in 2020 and the dem who wins will be faulted, by the same people who made Trump, with the real shith ole of a country we are by then. I say buy a gun and learn some marketable skills. This ride just started.
