Open Thread Jan. 9: Bad Ideas Abound

Filed in National by on January 9, 2018

Why not Oprah? Lots of reasons, but three of them are named Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and Jenny McCarthy. Of all the many reasons to oppose such an idea, her ready embrace of a parade of charlatans is the one that perhaps should give us the most pause.

Republicans don’t have the luxury of looking ahead to 2020. They’re more worried about the midterms, and what they see has them bailing on the House of Representatives at a record pace. Yesterday nother vulnerable California rep bowed out, and the GOP is finding it difficult to recruit candidates in places like New York, where nobody wants to challenge Gov. Andrew Cuomo or Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

Don’t worry, though, Republicans — a hero is on the horizon! That’s right, disgraced former sheriff Joe Arpaio has taken the hat off his 85-year-old, empty head and thrown it into the ring to become the next senator from Arizona. How this will play in a race where the frontrunner is warning supporters of the threat of chemtrails should make for a good episode of “Mystery Science Theater 3000.”

What is it with the offspring of would-be dictators? Why are they so incompetent? The latest example comes to us from Israel, when Bejamin Netanyahu’s son drunkenly spilled the beans on his father’s corruption. In vino veritas, as they say.

The government Netanyahu leads keeps demonstrating why a theocracy is a recipe for authoritarian government, no matter which “god” is being served: Israel has now blacklisted the Quakers, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947 for helping Jewish war refugees, because the Friends won’t stand for Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians in their midst. The bullied almost always grow up to be bulliers, don’t they?

Oprah for president is yet another shining example of American political stupidity, running strong now for over 200 years and unlikely to stop anytime soon. As for Arpaio consider his competition for the nomination, the strictly far out there Kelli Ward who’s also a chem trail fan. If (huge if) the Dems field a solid candidate they could pick up a seat here.

Leave is to Democrats to always want to fight the last war.

“You have a celebrity? Well look at OUR celebrity!”

    Strategy!

Oprah-fever is a function of the fact that Democrats have no national bench. Aside from Bernie and Biden, Pelosi and Schumer are the only Dems with national profiles, and who thinks they should (could?) run for President?

Well, it was a good speech. Leave it to Democrats to get overexcited about the slightest glimmer of uplift.

  4. Whoa. Looks like Dianne Feinstein, of all people, just released the Fusion GPS transcripts. Yep, it’s true:

@ES “Whoa. Looks like Dianne Feinstein, of all people, just released the Fusion GPS transcripts.”

I’m trying to make sense of all of this. This seems to be in response to Grassley’s and Graham’s referral of Steele for prosecution for potentially lying to the FBI. The release seems to put a big spike in that. And if that’s the case, then the GOP’s attempt at deflection not only fails in this case, but exposes a very ugly trend.

It appears that the GOP is in the “do anything” to save Trump mode, including the request of unjustified prosecution of people simply telling the true story.

…and it also exposes blatant lies told by Grassley.

Where are the editorials calling for his resignation??
