Open Thread Jan. 4: Trumpapalooza

The infotainment media was rocked yesterday by a salvo of revelations from the upcoming book by Michael Wolff, “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,” which describes a workplace that makes a shark tank seem like a community swim, along with a bumbling, rageaholic president who is both feared and mocked by those who work for him. The lead item was Steve Bannon’s opinion that the Trump Tower meeting between Don Jr., Kushner and some Russians was “treasonous,” but the petty depredations might prove more damaging in the long run. Calling Hope Hicks, in her presence, the “best piece of tail [Corey Lewandowski] will ever have.” The anecdote about how Trump schemed to sleep with his friends’ wives. Legalistic details don’t stick in the memory the way these examples of Trump’s skeevy behavior will. And the sad revelation that Trump literally has no friends (maybe if he hadn’t slept with all those wives…)

There’s a whole separate issue here of whether Wolff should be trusted, as his career is littered with people claiming he made up quotes. But he’s clearly also the subject on some media envy, and claims he has tapes to back up the book’s quotes.

The reaction of Trump and his minions illustrates yet again why he’s not up to any task at hand — he simply trotted out his tired old playbook of threatening toothless lawsuits and phoning in “anonymous” leaks to his last friend in the media.

Anybody paying attention should realize that Trump himself is a distracting sideshow from the real project here — the GOP sack of America. But it’s the only part of the show the public is interested in, and the show must go on. Indeed, more excerpts are out today, including one in which Wolff says Trump’s memory is failing and he often doesn’t recognize old friends.

Joe Biden visited Capitol Hill yesterday for Doug Jones’ swearing-in, and he did not disappoint the media in attendance, tossing out opinions like candy to a throng of kids. Highlight: Bannon’s remark that a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting was treasonous was a “hell of a statement coming from Bannon.”

So true. The GOP knows the jig is up so they are looting the store.

The looting phase is vintage Republican going back many years, just like Reagan, just like with Bush they do as much damage as they can before being removed. This time they’ve tipped their hand and much of the populace knows what their up to. The question becomes how much can we undo after the 2018 election and the blood bath of the far right I believe to be coming. And I am nothing like an optimist.
