Alabama Senate Race Open Thread

Filed in Featured by on December 12, 2017

All signs point to a razor-thin race.  Here’s one sign: Exit polls show men voting for Moore by a 57-40 margin and women voting for Jones by a 57-42 margin.

Earliest results have Jones up, but with less than 4000 votes in. Not statistically significant.

  1. While results may not yet be significant, Jones has a decent lead, 11,661 to 8572. I’m following write-ins as well b/c Sen. Shelby said that that’s what he would do. About 1% are write-ins so far, almost all coming from Moore. In a close race, that could be the difference.

Results pouring in quicker now. and it’s tighter: 19408 for Jones, 16657 for Moore. 3% in.

  2. Moore takes the lead, but it looks like rural is coming in earlier than urban. 29,206 to 27,248.

  3. Moore expands lead w/7% in. About a 7K lead.

  4. Just scoped out the precinct by precinct numbers. Virtually none of Birmingham, Mobile or Tuscaloosa are in. Moore’s lead is around 11K, but it’s a lot closer than that.

  5. Some Birmingham vote just dropped. It’s back to a 2K vote lead for Moore. Starting to think that Jones wins…

  6. 23% in. Moore with a 17K lead, but I feel good. Virtually all of the city vote is out. Those #’s are gonna be huge.

  7. MSNBC changes characterization from ‘Too Early To Call’ to ‘Too Close To Call’.

  8. Moore lead widens to about 40K. Gonna need huge margins in the city districts. With Alabama’s voter ID law, that may be difficult.

  9. Almost all of Montgomery is still out. Better than half of Birmingham, most of Mobile. Current margin aside, it’s gonna be close.

  10. Down to 6,000!! Looks like there’s more than enough city votes to put Jones ahead. I. Am. Psyched!

  11. Jones takes the lead on the NYTimes and MSNBC count! I’m tellin’ ya, with the vote that’s still out, he’s gonna win.

  12. Up by 11,000 and it’s only gonna grow. It’s OVER, ROVER!!!

    Just popped the champagne.

  13. Liberal Elite says:

    It’s been called.

  14. McConnell is saying that the winner won’t be seated until after they try to sneak the tax bill through. I can see that ending up in court.

  15. Liberal Elite says:

Jones should think about running for a National office.

He probably can’t get re-elected in 2020 in Alabama, but he could be valuable to a National ticket…

  16. The way the political landscape has changed, there’s no telling what things will look like in 2020. Wasn’t it Lindsey Graham who said that you can’t grow angry white men fast enough to rely on them? They’re dying off. Trump represents their last gasp.

When you think that the Voter ID laws probably held down the margin even more, you have to wonder what is in store for the Rethuglican Party moving forward. If you can’t even guarantee a win for a Senate race in the reddest of red states, you’re in trouble.

If only the D’s stood for something…

  17. Liberal Elite says:

@ES “If only the D’s stood for something…”

Standing for regular order and not having new crazy batshit nonsense everyday.
People might just go for that… Let’s call them the good old days!

“Bring back America” might be a good slogan.

  18. I somehow doubt that the American people will rally for ‘regular order’.

But I take your point. The crazy batshit nonsense has caused a tremendous amount of political fatigue. I’m pretty sure that people are already exhausted by it and will look for what (I can’t believe I’m quoting him) Warren Harding called ‘a return to normalcy’. BTW, normalcy isn’t a word. Or wasn’t when Harding coined it.

  19. nathan arizona says:

“Regular order” sounds pretty good right now.

  20. BTW, I LOVE Steve Kornacki.

  21. Rufus Y. Kneedog says:

“If you don’t believe in my character, don’t vote for me.” will go down in history right alongside “I’m not a witch.” in the political stupidity hall of fame.
Moore and O’Donnell both made the egomaniacal blunder of making the race about personalities instead of issues. America wins.

  22. That quote was a classic. I picture a voter on the fence hearing that line and saying, ‘Uh, OK’.

  23. Arthur says:

I find it humorous that people are posting things like ‘the alabama vote restored my hope in humanity.’ Really? half the people still voted for a child molesting, racist, ass. i guess people have a very low bar for humanity

  24. Alby says:

@Arthur: I believe the thinking is that if Alabama has just enough decent people to defeat Roy Moore, what excuse do Michigan and Wisconsin have?

  25. Dave says:

The good news is that Roy’s God told him to go pound sand. His God did not will it. God wanted Doug Jones. If God had wanted Roy, God would have made it happen. God’s will be done. God delivered the State of Alabama and the nation from evil.

Now that’s nonsense of course, even for someone who believes in a higher power, but if the Democrats have any sense at all, those are the messages they should be delivering, because that is the only message that has a chance of resonating with those people who voted for Moore.

Sure the Democrats ought to stand for something, but they ought to also start targeting their messaging to wider range of people. There is nothing wrong with God being on the side of Democrats or with Democrats quoting biblical verses. Heck I do that all the time and I don’t believe the bible is the word of God, but when I am speaking to those that do, I do use biblical verses to sway them.

One of my favorite things to do here at the beach is to quote Leviticus to someone I know is ardent Xtian and is eating lobster, crab or oysters: Leviticus 11:12
“Whatever in the water does not have fins and scales is abhorrent to you.”

It’s a lot of fun to listen to them try to rationalize parts of the bible they adhere to and the parts they don’t. Then I go on to quote Mark 7:6 “He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.”

The bible is full of opportunity to put Xtians in their place (which is not at the right hand of God). You don’t have to believe it because it’s not about you. It’s about them and their beliefs.
