Open Thread, Nov. 11: Saturday Scrapple

When it comes to judges, I like ’em well-seasoned. Republicans like ’em raw. Yesterday every Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted for a 36-year-old twerp who has only practiced law for three years and never tried a case. Real raw. Bellyache raw.

Louis C.K.’s apology got a mixed reception from critics and the public — a lot of women said it was too little, too late — but the judgment by the industry was swift and harsh. Salon’s Leigh C. Anderson rounds up the reaction and wonders if a comeback could ever happen.

If the NFL is ever going to rebound, it’s going to have to do it without the flag-wavers at the Dover American Legion post. They used to watch football every Sunday, but they’re switching over to NASCAR and golf, not-so-coincidentally the whitest “sports” on Earth except for maybe croquet.

Remember when House poobah Kevin McCarthy blurted out that he thought fellow California Rep. Dana Rohrabacher was being paid by the Russians? If he is, Robert Mueller might find it while he’s looking into Rohrabacher’s meeting with Michael Flynn.

Philadelphians are still fighting about Frank Rizzo, even if it’s now just his statue. (Remember, Philadelphians argued for years about where to put a statue of a fictional boxer. These people fight about statues that aren’t even Confederate generals.) This story reminds us that Rizzo created a persona much like the one built by a certain blustery, orange-tinged, press-baiting pol who lives in a big white house today.

Do I trust the police? Oh sure, sure I do. Because I’m white. If I were black, I’d be much more likely to be treated like this hit-and-run suspect was by some L.A. cops, who were caught on body cam planting drugs on him. Bet a lot of cops spent this morning double-checking how to turn those things off.

Back in school teachers told you that humans reached the Western Hemisphere by walking over a land bridge across what’s now the Bering Strait. Guess what? They were wrong. The new scientific consensus is that humans reached the west coast of both Americas by boat from Asia thousands of years before the Clovis people did by land. I don’t even want to think about how much rowing was involved.

The Dover Legionnaires need to know that police brutality stains the flag. Every time you boo or boycott an NFL player who takes the knee you are pissing on the flag.

The real disrespect for the flag (and the Constitution for which it stands) comes from the jumpy, hopped-up, poorly trained, and/or racist cops who kill or mistreat unarmed civilians and the prosecutors, judges, and juries that let them off the hook. Those are the guys you support when you boycott the NFL protesters.

A fresh start for Louie CK? I imagine the new routine will consist of him dropping trousers and masturbating on stage, and will be wholly embraced by a public that is constantly hungry for new forms of degredation.

Alby, you didn’t add the little bit at the end that invites us to share anything we want to share
