BREAKING: Townsend Will Not Seek AG Nomination, Will Run For Reelection To State Senate

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on November 9, 2017

State Senator Bryan Townsend stated today that he plans to seek reelection to the State Senate instead of mounting a race for Delaware Attorney General.

Two D’s who might seek to appeal to progressives are considering the race and will likely decide in the next few weeks.  State Rep. Sean Lynn appears poised to run for the AG slot rather than seek reelection to the House. John Carney’s Deputy Legal Counsel Chris Johnson  is seriously considering a run as well.  There is some possibility that the two may come to a meeting of minds on who will run, but it’s by no means a likelihood.

Former Attorney General Charles Oberly is considering a run, and his recently-released report on solutions to the prison problems is, IMHO, a solid blueprint for moving forward. Former Tom Gordon ally and current FOP officer Tim Mullaney has already announced.

There could well be more. Someone is pushing for Ian McConnel on our blog and, while early signs were that McConnel would not run, he may be reconsidering.

I’ll talk more about this in tomorrow’s Political Weekly, but please feel free to talk about it today.

ElSom: Please explain why Carney’s deputy legal counsel might appeal to progressives? I’ve seen little that appears genuinely progressive come out of the Carney administration.

The race is a mud run already. Check out Amy Cherry’s interview with Mullaney, who played the wounded innocent: “I was hoping that all candidates would refrain from the ‘Trump-type’ of campaign style in putting out false information to attempt to damage another person’s reputation.”

  3. That’s a good question, MW. Especially since Johnson has successfully argued against FOIA requests on behalf of Carney, and especially since the puff piece I linked to is from a business publication.

I take it back. And don’t tell me ‘no takebacks’.

Sean Lynn is an authentic Democrat in terms of being the side of the little guy. He has my strong support if he runs.

Townsend is a great State Senator. He has been tough on DEDO handouts, calls for greater government transparency, and standing up to DE Way.
Glad hes staying put for a while…There need to be a few smart people left down in Dover, very few left anymore.
