Manafort Ordered to Surrender

Filed in National by on October 30, 2017

I know the wording is boilerplate, but I hope the “surrender” verbiage hurst Trump’s feelings. He is such a status conscious twit.

WASHINGTON — Paul Manafort and his former business associate Rick Gates were told to surrender to federal authorities Monday morning, the first charges in a special counsel investigation, according to a person involved in the case.

The charges against Mr. Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, and Mr. Gates, a business associate of Mr. Manafort, were not immediately clear but represent a significant escalation in a special counsel investigation that has cast a shadow over the president’s first year in office.

  1. Initial charges appear to be tax evasion counts, due to an expiring statute of limitations deadline.

  2. Dana Garrett says:

Doesn’t seem to be Russiagate related. No relationship to Trump.

Reading through the document, that sure looks at least like attempted collusion to me.

    Here’s an nice little nugget:

“35. On July 27, 2017, defendant PAPADOPOULOS was arrested upon his arrival at Dulles International Airport. Follow his arrest, defendant PAPADOPOULOS met with the government on numerous occasions to provide information and answer questions.”

    We’re number one!
Per the filed indictment: Manafort and Gates owned or controlled 23 “Domestic Entities” used in the scheme. Of those 23 domestic entities (LLCs) 9 were Delaware LLCs. Congratulations, Delaware, you are number one again.
Please call and write your representatives and senators demanding that they move HB 57 to the floor for a vote. HB 57 strives to reform current Delaware code regarding Delaware LLC licensing law to ferret out these individuals and entities that engage in nefarious abuses such as money laundering, arms dealing, drug trafficking and human trafficking.
The bill’s synopsis reads thus: “To obtain obedience to federal laws protecting national security, with the help of registered agents, this Bill will prevent the use of our Limited Liability Act by persons and nations identified by federal agencies as a threat to this country. The bill also seeks to prevent existing limited liability company owners who are on the lists of prohibited persons or governments, but may have formed a Delaware LLC already, from getting involved in industries in which the federal government has placed restrictions on certain investments. Requiring clearance from the Committee on Foreign Investments in the U.S. for their plans will enable the Secretary to waive this provision when it is received. Registered agents must be the parties to screen for identified threats because those with a contract with the Department of State enter applications on its computers on a regular basis. CFIUS seldom prevents investments, (two since 1989 to be precise) but it may ask for mitigation in some way to reduce the potential threat involved. This Act will not impact the ability of almost any applicant to easily form an LLC nor does it require any companies to disclose more information to the Secretary of State in its application for certification than is now required”.
Please call and email Representative Melanie Smith and demand that she stop opposing release of HB 57 from the House Judiciary committee and vote it to the floor for a full House vote.

    Representative John Kowalko

  10. Delaware LLC’s have often been used (we really have no idea just how many times) to shield legally-dubious behavior from the authorities. At what point will we decide that we really shouldn’t be in that business? OK, asked and answered as it’s a yet another of Delaware’s gimmicks for keeping taxes low on Delaware’s wealthiest.

So, why don’t we at least increase charges for licensing these LLC’s? The mere fact that Bryon Short has several of these hardly seems to be a reasonable justification for the General Assembly to dismiss this proposal.

  11. RE Vanella says:

You guys should ask John Carney about this. He has a lot of fine ideas.

  12. jason330 says:

I can just hear the chamber’s response… Kowalko wants to kill the golden, diseased, festering, putridly corrupt goose!

  13. alby says:

“it’s yet another of Delaware’s gimmicks for keeping taxes low on Delaware’s wealthiest.”

It’s a way of keeping taxes low on everybody in the state. It brings in almost $800 million a year. You aren’t going to raise that much just taxing “Delaware’s wealthiest.”

  14. mouse says:

Being home to corporate crooks has to fail at some point

  15. alby says:

Only if someone offers them a more comfortable home. The race to the bottom is never over.

  16. john kowalko says:

Dear Heffron, Bullock, Geisenberger, members of the Corporate Bar Commission and all my Chamber of Commerce friends,
I DO NOT WANT TO KILL OR HARM THE GOOSE. I ONLY WANT TO ENSURE THAT WE DE-WORM IT AND DE-FLEA IT SO IT WILL NOT DIE AND DECOMPOSE CORRUPTING ALL OF THE LEGITIMACY AROUND IT AND POISONING DELAWARE’S AND IT’S TAXPAYERS’ REPUTATION.
Wishing you all the success that money can buy I remain sympathetically yours,
    Representative John Kowalko

  17. john kowalko says:

Pardon me. “Delouse” is the appropriate term
    John K.

  18. RE Vanella says:

Technical yes the word is delouse. I gotta admit though, reads better in the original.

    Kowalko for Governor…

  19. The Papadopoulos indictment looks like a huge deal, according to law professor Seth Abramson. Abramson thinks that Papa Doc has been wearing a wire for months now:

BTW, he was a lot more than some guy who dropped into the office to volunteer. They sent him to Israel as their Russian expert.
