Open Thread for Friday, October 27, 2017

Filed in National by on October 27, 2017

Sorry for the delayed open thread. Three reasons: 1) I’m still figuring out how to code this, 2) my gout is acting up and 3) I got sidetracked by a clip of Idina Menzel singing “Defying Gravity,” which, yes, throws my heterosexuality into doubt.

It’s also a very slow news day, as evidenced by the appearance of the word “Kardashian” in my news feed. Say what you will about Trump, at least he’s held the Kardashians at bay in the media. That’s no small feat.

That no-bid contract to restore power in Puerto Rico is even worse that it looked at first — it forbids auditing. Let’s see how many elected officials call for an immediate investigation of this incredibly obvious example of corruption. This, not whatever President Orange Crush tweeted lately, is what a responsible media would be trumpeting to the public.

What was billed as Trump’s major address about the opioid crisis turned out to be a rerun of Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” program. Trump doesn’t look as good in a red dress.

Fox News is not thriving in the Age of Trump. Unlike their rivals, Fox’s ad revenue is down while MSNBC’s is up and CNN held about even. Laura Ingraham should fix that right up.

I love me some Eugene Robinson, but he is a creature of Washington. Here he advises Democrats to stress “opportunity” as often as possible. Uh, Gino — didn’t the last Democratic candidate stress that? Young people aren’t falling for that dodge anymore. They can count. Opportunity for all equals success for very few. It’s a feature, not a bug, of capitalism, and it’s why young people aren’t all that thrilled with capitalism.

I admit I’m not fan of technology, but this bowled me over: The iPhone has an ultrasound features that a surgeon used to diagnose his own cancer. Let’s see your landline do that.

Have at it.

LOL, Ivanka, Eric and Little Donny are the new Kardashians, along with self-proclaimed “first First Lady” mama Ivana…
    Who needs a Dynasty reboot?

  2. alby says:

@Homie: Absolutely. I still think many Trump voters just wanted the entertainment.

  3. Kelly says:

There is a story on delawareonline about Theo ripping off the Wilmington taxpayers and Bud Freel has the nerve to say he knew nothing about it. Are you kidding me, it is his job to know where every penny of taxpayers money his going. He is definitely covering for someone or getting a payoff. This makes me sick all this shiot going on with Haifa and Velda Potter ripping off city funds. They both need to be impeach. And they both want to run for Mayor. God Help us ALL

  4. Paul says:

For the gout: purchase and consume about 8-15 cherries. The ones in the frozen food section work well and have the added bonus of storing until it acts up again. Best wishes. The cherries worked for me. Just start consuming a half dozen or so at the first sign. Or later, it doesn’t matter, they work.

  5. alby says:

Paul: Thanks, it’s a go-to for me, but even the concentrated juice couldn’t hold this one off. I’m improving already, though.

  6. chris says:

    Per Kelly’s comments:
Bud Freel has given so much cover to Haniffa and Velda’s corruption, it is a disgrace. The folks in Forty Acres really have Bud’s number now. He is a walking case for term limits!

  7. Kelly says:

Thank you Chris for your comment. If it wasn’t for Bud supporting Mrs
Potter for Treasurer we would not be having this discussion. I think he should be removed as Finance Chairmen and replaced with Rob Williams he is the real watchmen of the Finances.

  8. chris says:

YES.. Bob Williams is the ONLY member of City Council speaking out about the slush fund corruption. The silence is deafening from the rest of Council.

  9. Arthur says:

I think its time for someone to start running on a platform where the only money collected for the state is used for state programs. no more $5k here and $100k there for these types of slush accounts. im willing to bet that if every one of those accounts were looked at from the state, county and local level there would be malfeasance. These accounts were designed for graft

  10. Jim C says:

Alby, sorry to hear about the gout firing up. I had to order colchicine from a Canadian pharmacy after Humana decided that it wouldn’t pay for it anymore.

  11. alby says:

Jim probably knows this, but anyone who doesn’t have gout probably doesn’t — colchicine is Exhibit A in how the pharmaceutical industry owns Congress. It’s been around since 1500 BC, but thanks to the FDA, one company holds a monopoly until 2029 and increased the price more than 2000 percent — and no, that’s not a typo.

I like the commenter Kelly. I’m glad Kelly is my neighbor.
