I can’t make this up:

World’s most despicable ‘human’ being:

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

Let the lawsuits begin!

A distraction ploy – red meat for his base of deplorables.

  3. Probably. Not to mention: Policy by twitter account?

    Random thoughts:
    1. He knows more fake news about Russia will come out later today.
    2. Senate GOP needs distraction as cover while it dares work in public on healthcare.
    3. Tweet went out before he told what’s left of his staff to draft the executive order.
    4. If you’re not going to vote for me, I don’t want you in my Army.

  5. Ben says:

Distraction or not, it has to be fought.

  6. At least two R senators, McCain and Joni Ernst, have already issued statements in opposition to Trump’s ‘policy’ tweet.

  7. anonymous redux says:

yes, this is a set-up to get liberals fuming over something relatively (I said relatively) small. it would be like losing a presidential election because some democrats worried more about where a few people went to the bathroom than about economic disparity. both are important, but priorities!

  8. alby says:

@redux: I don’t know any liberals who cared more about the bathroom issue than bigger issues. If you’re going to cite this meme, at least understand it.

Liberals care about everything, including the bathroom issue. It therefore gets reported on, but as a relatively minor story in the mainstream press. RWNJs in the media, however, seize on it and pretend it’s a major story. They rant about it and use it to demonize everything about liberals and Democrats. The process is called “othering,” and to combat it you must get people to truly believe “we’re all in this together,” not simply adopt it as a campaign slogan.

  9. puck says:

The Senate is right now trying to take away our health care. Keep your eye on the ball.

  10. alby says:

@puck: And you propose to do what about it?

Meanwhile, kleptocrats are destroying global democracy so they can keep a few hundred billion dollars.

  11. anonymous redux says:

it’s not that the democrats cared about the bathroom stuff over other issues, but that they insisted on talking about it to people who didn’t want hear it. I don’t think all of them were fox viewers unable to decide for themselves that gender issues are not the most important to them; and fox is hardly the only outlet to report what democrats say about gender issues. some of those people would have listened to democratic messages about things more important to them, like the economy. maybe enough of them that the democrats could have pulled out a victory. (we know for sure that what they did didn’t work.) this stuff from trump about transgenders in the military would have never come up if the democrats had won. it’s not practical, or to the benefit of liberals, to think we can get people to believe “we’re all in this together.” at least not all at once. certainly not before the next few elections. they just don’t and you can’t turn on a switch and make them. but you can form alliances with people who share enough of what you believe in order to defeat far bigger assholes.

  12. alby says:

As I asked earlier, who are these people we’re talking about it? Not Democrats nearly so much as the media, which wouldn’t let it go.

You act as if these things happen by accident. The media is happy to foment culture war for money, as it precludes discussion of the problems facing late-stage capitalism.

Everything is not fine, and even Trump is a distraction from that.

  13. anonymous redux says:

the media reports what people say. democrats said it. people reacted as they chose. I realize places like fox demonize the gender stuff, but I don’t see that the mainstream media does. in fact, wouldn’t transgender advocates — or any democrat who wanted to get a message out — be angry if it did not report what they said?
