Delaware Pit Bull killed by cop to end vicious attack

Filed in National by on June 8, 2017

Police had to kill a dog at All Aboard Grooming and Kennels in Dagsboro June 6 after it attacked a state Office of Animal Welfare officer at the shelter.

Officers from Delaware State Police were called to the shelter shortly before 4 p.m. for a dangerous dog actively attacking an animal-control officer.

Dagsboro Police Department Chief Floyd Toomey said a Dagsboro officer was the first on scene, and saw a white-and-brown dog, suspected to be a pit bull, viciously attacking the 28-year-old female officer.

“The Dagsboro officer’s actions were decisive, crucial and heroic in bringing a close to the brutal attack on the victim officer, potentially saving life and limb,” Dagsboro Police Department Chief Floyd Toomey said in a press release.

But that dog never did anything like that before. I claim media bias.

So gentle and great around kids. Truly shocking.

I love how skepticism flies out the window when you agree with the story.

Why was there an animal control officer there in the first place? It’s among the dozens of things the story doesn’t say.

Here’s a pro tip: What police tell the press isn’t always accurate, and in fact seldom matches other eyewitness reports — perhaps you recall that from well-publicized interactions between police and African Americans.

So you are wise to offer this without comment. Until we have some idea of what happened, this just tells us that a dog that “looked like a pit bull” (this is what Aurochs was talking about) attacked an animal control officer.

Just checked the kennel’s Facebook page and found this:

“We at Allaboard would like to take a minute to briefly explain what happen on June 6th 2017. The incident took place in a building we lease to B.V.S.P.C.A., this agency contracts with the State of Delaware to take care of stray dogs picked up in Sussex County. B.V.S.P.C.A. has their own office and staff. On the afternoon of the 6th an Animal Control Officer was attacked by a stray dog housed in the leased building. Because the person attacked is a law enforcement officer, many police agencies responded. We can not thank the Dagsboro Police Department enough for getting here and resolving the situation professionly and quickly. Also to the other Police Officers, please accept a big thank you. The officer that was attacked was treated and released from a local hospital. We hope this clears up any and all speculation.”

A stray dog. So much for banning the breed.

With the big intro, I was expecting this comment to reveal some new information. It didn’t. “stray dog” means what? That it wasn’t a Pit Bull? Why do you think so? Also ease up on the straw man arguments.

I agree with you about banning. My position is (and has always been) that Pit Bulls should be acknowledged as a dangerous breed, owning to the fact that they’ve been bred to be dangerous. Further, I think the PR campaign to try to get unsuspecting people to adopt them by dishonestly reporting that they are not dangerous, is sketchy to the point of immoral.

If we put down the owners of violent dogs, I bet that would solve the problem.

  7. puck says:

Using the gun analogy – you are allowed to own a gun but you are not allowed to own a bazooka. Pit bulls are the bazookas of dogs.

  8. meatball says:

The animal control office is indeed 20 feet from the front door of the kennel.

  9. A friend sent this along:
Here is legislation introduced to give the OAW authority for enforcement since they were removed from the Constable Board.
There is still no regulations for training of their officers which should be included in this enforcement authority.

We could have saved a bundle if we’d left animal control to the non-profits but then we wouldn’t be a no kill state and Patti Blevins wouldn’t be gifted a bureaucratic paycheck.

Will this discussion help Carney be defeated?

  11. alby says:

My point is that you don’t know what breed it is. Breed-specific legislation will mean DNA testing. “Looks like a pit bull” is not going to cut it legally.

And we really have little information about what happened other than a dog got dangerously aggressive. We don’t know how long since it was brought in — was it just out of the van or had it been there a while? Did it attack everyone or did something trigger it?

Lots of pundits weighed in on Comey’s motives before they knew all the facts, and his motives now look different. I’ll wait until I know more before condemning this dog and all dogs who look like it.

  12. jason330 says:

You don’t need DNA testing to launch a PSA campaign that warns:

“Don’t be tricked into thinking that your neighbor’s Pit Bull isn’t dangerous. It is dangerous. Be careful.”

  13. Phil says:

If it looks like a pit bull is good enough. That’s what the brady bill did for guns. Certain styles were banned, while the same gun with a wood stock was allowed.

  14. Dana Garrett says:

I had a student write a paper on this topic. She cited well sourced evidence that pit bulls are not the breed that is most inclined to attack humans. Several breeds come before them with Dalmations being the most likely breed to attack humans. But you don’t hear about them. I now own a pit bull and it’s the most loving dog I’ve ever owned. I do think, however, that pit bulls reputation stems not from the amount of times they attack but from the strength they possess and consequent damage they do when they do attack.

  15. meatball says:

Nobody said they are the most likely to attack you. Pit bull derivatives are the most likely to send you to the hospital or funeral home, though.

Newspapers are full of quotes from survivors like, ” she was the most loving dog ever….”

  16. mouse says:

That’s the problem, pits don’t bite any more often than other dogs but they are one of the few that tears off limbs and kills kids
