Trump Pressed Comey to Stop Investigating Flynn

Filed in National by on May 16, 2017

I wonder what would have happened if Obama had asked Comey to stop investigating Hillary Clinton?

“I hope you can let this go,” Trump asked of Comey. Knowing the President was in the process of obstruction justice, Comey drafted an unclassified memo to create “a paper trail” documenting what he saw as Trump’s improper attempts to influence the FBI probe. The New York Times did not obtain a copy of the memo, but cited two unnamed sources who read it. An unnamed associate of Comey’s also read parts of the memo to a Times reporter.

“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Trump said, as quoted in the report. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”

  1. God, I hope that there are tapes. Trump has already done far worse than what got Nixon hounded out of office.

    Blatant obstruction of justice.

  2. john kowalko says:

Time to impeach and repeal this aberration.

    John Kowalko

  3. chris says:

A lot of Republicans would not mind Pence as President.
Trump might end up taking down the whole party.

  4. Dave says:

I have been concerned that if something happened to Trump, we would end up with Pence. I wasn’t sure who was the lesser of evils because Trump is certainly not a conservative, he is just Trump and is essentially amoral.

However with this latest cluster f***, the Trump Presidency has jumped the shark and a Pence presidency is the best we can hope for.

  5. Ben says:

There is no way the GOP impeaches him. The party of Duke/Bannon owes Drumpf their jobs. The rabid mob of incestuous Klansman that is their base will primary them out.
It’s time to start organizing voter registration drives so make sure people in Dumpistan can vote in the mid-terms. It’s the only way.

Could someone please tell me the actual technique that the Russians used to “hack” the election, and the damning information that was disseminated as a result ?…..Thank you.

  7. Dave says:

“Could someone please tell me the actual technique that the Russians used to “hack” the election”

    Sure. Here ya go: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disinformation.

    “And the damming information…”

Sure. Anything and everything that conforms to your beliefs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias

  8. jason330 says:

By “hack” I suppose you mean the widely know Russian interference in the election which took a couple of forms including direct collusion between Russian intelligence services and members of the Trump campaign.

I say widely known, but I guess it isn’t something they dwell on where you get your “news.” Here is a primer: Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections

Why would you bring that up now though? Does it simply not matter to you that the Russian’s are basically calling the shots in the Trump White House?

  9. fightingbluehen says:

But there is zero evidence of collusion, direct or otherwise, and Democratic politicians have admitted this each time they are pressed with the issue.

I think the Democrats should stick to the proven blueprint and go for the old, “coverup is worse than the crime” strategy , or just maintain an indefinite investigation because of the “seriousness of the charge”, right?

  10. Jason330 says:

There is only “zero evidence” if you live in a conservative dreamland which, appearently, you do.

  11. mikem2784 says:

Why cover up for Flynn? Why cover up at all? Why give secrets to the Russian ambassador? He’s either a traitor or the most oblivious moron to ever hold office. Either way, he shouldn’t be president.

  12. Jim says:

OK, I’m not the brightest candle on the cake but will someone please detail for me what treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors have taken place.

  13. fightingbluehen says:

Why would Comey hang on to this apparent, “the coverup is worse than the crime” information, instead of reporting it, if in fact the story is true?…..(evidently the money is afraid it’s true)…Also, the law says that the President gets to decide what is secret and what is not….Just saying.

  14. jason330 says:

…the law says that the President gets to decide what is secret and what is not…

…on the fly… while trying to impress his Russian masters.

I’ve heard a lot of idiots making this alleged point. You’d really have to be stupid to not see how this is bullshit. Stupid or willfully ignorant. Or both, as in fightingbluehen’s case I reckon.

  15. jason330 says:

    Jim –

For one, Trump pressed Comey to stop investigating Flynn. And based on your question, I agree with your self assessment.

  16. Alby says:

“there is zero evidence of collusion, direct or otherwise, and Democratic politicians have admitted this each time they are pressed with the issue.”

There is zero evidence that has been made public, perhaps, depending on how you parse each of the terms involved. I well remember how you always give Democrats the benefit of your doubt.

“Why would Comey hang on to this apparent, “the coverup is worse than the crime” information, instead of reporting it, if in fact the story is true?”

Because that’s how the FBI operates. If you’re walking out on a branch and carrying a saw, they’re not going to stop you from using it unless you would hurt someone when you fell. You let the bad guys incriminate themselves.

The very act of asking the questions calls into question your ability to see things without partisan glasses. It also prompts me to wonder what kind of idiot you have to be at this point to give Trump or his Republican enablers the benefit of the doubt.

  17. Jason330 says:

A standard issue GOP idiot, it seems. There will be no end to their faith in the strong man because the party is now all about loyalty to the strongman and nothing else.

  18. fightingbluehen says:

“Because that’s how the FBI operates.”

Comey was supposedly duty bound to immediately report Trump’s alleged attempt to obstruct justice, to the DOJ. Apparently it’s code.

You guys just hurl insults and sidestep. Where is this current proof you claimed that exists that Dianne Feinstein recently claimed didn’t exist?…..Maybe this new special investigator/counsel will find something, huh.

  19. Jason330 says:

If firing Comey for investigating his links with Russia isn’t enough evidence for you, if telling Comey not to investigate Flynn isn’t enough…what would you have to lear to admit that Trump and his campaign had and had links to Russian Intelligence?

Maybe try this, mentally remove the name Trump from this and swap it out for Obama.

  20. fightingbluehen says:

What links to Russian intelligence ? Comey was having a nightmare and had to go.
Comey was like a referee who makes a bad call and then tries to make up for it by inserting himself into the game to try and make amends, but just compounds the problem.
Yes, the referee James Comey. The man who put Martha Stewart in jail, was “having a nightmare”……Sent packing to officiate non-league football.

  21. Jason330 says:

Sounds like you have no intention of thinking critically about this. Too bad.

  22. Alby says:

He’s just rooting for his team. That’s the depth of his intellect.

  23. Jim says:

So tell me Jason330, how is it that you personally know what exactly was said in that alleged conversation and what exactly was the demeanor of the two parties involved? Facts please, not hate driven rhetoric.

  24. Alby says:

@Jim: If you’re actually interested in the material, rather than fighting with liberals, there is literally an encyclopedia’s worth of stories published about this every day, from virtually every news outlet.

I didn’t read above, so I don’t know what particular “fact” you are focused on, but only someone insistent on ignoring reality can still pretend that everything about Trump and Russia is normal — or that there’s nothing wrong with it.

In short, if you were truly interested you would educate yourself. But you’re not. I think you’re actually trying to prove to yourself that you’re smarter than liberals, which you’re not.

Furthermore, I’ve yet to meet the — whatever you are, Trump defender, let’s call it — who had even the slightest doubts about the non-factual bullshit piled up against Obama.

You’re a child, which means you have the perfect president for you.

  25. jason330 says:

    What Alby said.

  26. Alby says:

The real question is, why does FBH think Martha Stewart didn’t belong in jail? The outcry, IIRC, is that she got off very lightly because of her celebrity. Apparently Trump thinks being a celebrity comes with special privileges vis a vis breaking the law, and why wouldn’t he? OJ, Michael Jackson, and scores of others in addition to Martha got off easy because the general public has the IQ of a group of baboons — which, perhaps not coincidentally, is called a “congress.”

  27. mouse says:

    Nah ha! lol

  28. fightingbluehen says:

Comey testified at a Senate hearing on May 3 that Trump never tried to pressure, or influence any investigations; so, was he lying? Can he change his testimony?
…..What is the “Nah ha” taunt? I’ve seen ha ha or even ja ja, but I’ve never seen this Nah ha business.

  29. fightingbluehen says:

“The real question is, why does FBH think Martha Stewart didn’t belong in jail?”

I vaguely even remember what the circumstances were for her incarceration….I just knew that Comey gained some of his notoriety from it.

And yes, being a celebrity does change things….For instance, what would the Feds do if they found out that Oprah Winfrey was innocently telling certain people that she planned to lose weight in the near future…..You could make a lot of money off of that information…..My guess is that they wouldn’t pursue something like that, due to her celebrity.

  30. RE Vanella says:

This conversation really derailed. What a shame.

  31. Alby says:

So you’re holding Comey to a much tougher standard of honesty than you do Trump. Interesting.

  32. fightingbluehen says:

I don’t, but the Senate will, because Comey testified at a Senate hearing.
If Comey told the Senate committee on May 3, that Trump didn’t try to influence him, and then goes out and changes his story, and says that Trump did in fact try to influence him, then the Senate will probably have a problem with that.

  33. RE Vanella says:

On the spectrum from perfect, unachievable honestly on one extreme and pathologically dangerous deception and deceit on the other the gap between Comey and Trump is so great you can barely graph it. A kindergarten student could recognize it.

I have no admiration or good will toward any US Senator, but each is slightly more perceptive than a five year-old.

This entire thread is fucking stupid.

  34. Alby says:

That’s because FBH is fucking stupid. But he’s a longtime customer, so I find it amusing to watch him twist himself into knots denying the obvious.

Wanna take bets on how long it takes him to mention either Obama or Clinton?

He’s right about the Senate, but only because they’re as stupid and partisan as he is. He seems not to have noticed that numerous Trumpkins have lied to Congress and nothing has happened to them. He also seems not to be the least bit bothered by the blindingly obvious double standard these fucksticks deploy.

He also doesn’t seem to have an actual value system, by which he can determine for himself whether something is right or wrong. Like all conservatives, he needs liberals to stake out a position so he knows what he opposes.

These people are proto-humans, Rob. At least FBH is trying to think. Failing, but trying. Most of them don’t even do that.

  35. Jim says:

Still waiting for facts, not some media stories from nameless faces. Oh well.

  36. Aurochs says:

My impression of FBH is that he’s a fanatical Sanders supporter/Clinton opponent who reveled in the leaks because they “proved” that the DNC used dirty tricks to sqaush Sanders’ candidacy. The infinitely more plausible scenario that Sanders simply didn’t play the game well enough to win is impossible in his mind.

I’d guess that FBH would have voted for Stein in November had Stein actually been a serious enough candidate to bother getting herself on the ballot in Delaware.

ETA: However, I agree that this tread is fucking stupid and I really shouldn’t be here keeping it alive. Goddamnit.

  37. Alby says:

“Still waiting for facts, not some media stories from nameless faces. Oh well.”

No you’re not. And the second you can’t deny anymore you’ll disappear. Why don’t you declare victory and leave?
