After screwing around, Dover picks police chief

Filed in National by on May 5, 2017

Via Delaware State News- DOVER — In a historic hiring, Deputy Chief Maj. Marvin Mailey was selected as the city’s first African-American police chief by unanimous vote on Thursday.

All eight city council members approved of Mayor Robin R. Christiansen’s recommendation to become Dover’s 14th police chief.

Chief Mailey, 50, topped a list of 34 candidates who applied for the vacancy left when Paul Bernat retired in January. He said he wanted to be chosen because of his qualifications as a police officer and nothing else.

Selected by merit in state and local government?? now theres a fresh concept.

After screwing around? No. After running a professional national search process based on the merits instead of immediately bowing to Sean Lynn and the ministers and NAACP who wanted someone picked just because of the color of their skin without even an interview? Yes.

  3. Jason330 says:

lol. Was the sub rosa rewrite of the JD part of the professional national search? I don’t recall.

  4. SussexWatcher says:

To require that a police chief of the state capital have a college degree?I have no problem with that.

  5. Jason330 says:

Got it. You concede that there was a sub rosa rewrite of the JD. One that you are cool with.

  6. SussexWatcher says:

From what I understand, the “JD,” or job description in English, was being discussed by the committee and a draft was inadvertently posted that included a college degree as a requirement – which would have precluded Mailey. Lynn, Gunn and their compadres raised a holy fuck of a stink accusing the mayor of everything short of racism. The job description in question was never used in the actual search. So your high horse can go back into the stable unless you have top-secret inside information that says otherwise.

I have no problem with a police chief being required to have a college degree, and actually think it’s a positive thing for a professional police force. Mailey has been with Dover for 24 years; the city has a tuition reimbursement program. He could have knocked out a cheapo low-stress do-nothing joke degree from WilmU over the last decade easily. Why is it racist to suggest that a qualified police chief should have a bachelor’s degree? Still struggling with that.

Now, is the mayor blameless? Certainly not. The guy ran the process in the most hamhanded incompetent way possible. He’s a doofus and a dope, but I’ve seen nothing to indicate he’s a racist.

Who has the leisure time to spell out the word “Job Description”?

A “professional national search process based on the merits”…? Nah…this looks like an all too typical sham of a search intended to distract from the reality that they wanted an internal candidate from the jump.
