What Do Charlie Copeland and Mike Harrington Have In Common?

Filed in Delaware by on May 1, 2017

Glad you asked.  Both have held the title of Republican State Chairman. Both are former legislators.

Here’s the thing, though.  While Copeland’s short and relatively recent legislative reign ended when he chose to pursue…well, whatever he chose to pursue, Dissolute Recrimination and the like, Mike Harrington lost his reelection bid by 23 votes…back in 1982.  In a Dover-area district to challenger and, I think, dry-cleaners operator, Stu Outten1982.

Since that time, the name ‘Mike Harrington’, while still associated with the Dover real estate market, has had no political visibility. None. Before this weekend, have any of you even heard a public statement from the guy?

So now, some 35 years after he left the Delaware General Assembly, he has been ‘elevated’ to the role of R State Chair.

There can be only one conclusion: No one else wanted it.

So quick to dismiss what you do not know about. Mike is in my field and he is accomplished and highly successful in 2 people oriented businesses real estate and insurance. He has been an R activist and has roots in Kent and Sussex County. Dismissing your opponent is a quick way to lose elections.
Know your opponent before you run your condescending mouth,
    cheers

  2. I know a bit more than you do. Especially the fact that he’s 35 years removed from being in public office. Didn’t question his accomplishments in his field. Hey, I’m 9 years removed from working in the General Assembly. I make no bones about the fact that campaigns have changed so much in that time that I’d be a dinosaur today if charged with running one.

I know that if you’re looking to re-energize a political party, you don’t want someone that rooted in the past. As much as I personally like John Daniello, for example, the Delaware D’s, at least, recognize the need for rejuvenation and renewal. Harrington does not offer that at all.

No actually you very definitely do not “know more” about Mike or aside from one building in Dover Kent and Sussex counties for that matter. I know the man personally and have for 35 years. we both served on our industry’s regulatory body appointed by Governors of our respective parties. I agree on little policy and issues with Mike but to continue to dismiss him as you do at your and the candidates we will be supporting will suffer the consequences.
to compare him the the idiot that you did is to again sell him short. there is not an age limit on critical innovative thinking. Mike has been financing candidates and working the back rooms continuously . The good news is that the D’s have assembled a strong Team statewide and in New Castle with the merciful retirement of the idiot you reference. Also the mean spirited vindictive dude in Sussex is gone replaced by a nice well meaning but likely marginally effective Chair. But hey, sit back and take fact free condescending shots that will pay off big in November 18, FOR THEM!

  4. What I wrote was that, when you appoint someone who is 35 years removed from the active political fray as State Chair, it means that nobody else wanted the position.

Couldn’t care less how respected he is in his chosen field. That field has not been elective politics for 35 years.

Don’t take is as a diss on him personally. It’s not. It’s about a Party that had to go that far afield to find someone willing to take on the role.

And there’s no triumphalism as far as my opinions about the D’s. Totally agree w/you about the Sussex situation. And the Kent County D’s have been AWOL forever.

I just don’t see any way Harrington can move the R’s forward as a State party. Of course, the D’s just might do it for them.

Ok , Last try, The idiot who was chair LOST a primary 46 years ago and was never elected to anything. i will say by any reasonable definition that makes him an activist and idiot that he is became a long term party Chair.

Mike has not been OUT of the fray. I ran a PAC for a few cycles that was probably 70% R money and Mike was a contributor. He has been an inside player since at least 76 or so. He is cunning, course, and not overloaded with sensitivity. He is at the very least substantially smarter than the idiot and attuned to his constituencies not tone deaf like the idiot. but hey, continue to make uninformed assertions about a political party and its functions of choosing leaders about which you know and probably care to know, very little
    cheers

  6. The idiot who was chair? Charlie Copeland? Well, he was elected to the State Senate. You’re losing me. Are you talking about Daniello? He was elected to the precursor of New Castle County Council (Levy Court, I think) with the promise that ‘I want to eliminate my job’. Which he did by pushing for a County government. He was a reformer back then. So, you’re wrong. He’s not an idiot. Or is it some other idiot? Please elucidate.

Daniello stayed on the job too long, IMHO. But Harrington is almost the same age as Daniello, and has been, according to you, an activist since ’76. For over 50 years now. But Daniello’s retiring, and Harrington is just taking over. Just for the record, I’m totally fine with it. Think it sucks for the R’s, though, which was my point.

Mike is lucky to have a good friend like you.

Gee–been busy at work and just caught up with this. “Mean spirited, vindictive dude”??? Who could that be? I am the guy who just stepped down as Sussex Dem Chair. Call me a loser who failed to win elections during my tenure, but mean spirited and vindictive? Even my worst enemies don’t call me that….oh wait, one just did. He just didn’t do it while I was chair. I guess he was too busy raising money for some of those Republicans who beat my candidates, and the same guy who did not become a committeeman so he could “keep. (his) options open”.

An you agree El Som?!? I am so hurt.

  8. You’re not mean-spirited or vindictive, Mitch. Should have called him out. I apologize.

It took me an additional comment or two to realize that this guy is a resurfacing troll.

    The ‘cheers’ gives him away.

“Old trolls never die. They just lick their wounds and come back up for more abuse.”

Thanks El Som. Gymrat’s comments amused me because his political positions are “Old Sussex” in that he wants Democratic candidates to “look like Republicans” and harks back to the great days when Sussex elected such great Dems as Thurman Adams and Bob Venables. He thinks those who moved here shouldn’t run for office but are free to write checks.

I was hurt by your seeming to agree with him, and accept your correction. I have many faults, but mean spirited and vindictive are not among them- just the opposite as I tried to work with the conservative elements of the Party and they mostly did nothing but criticize everyone else’s ideas without offering any of their own.

Gotta get to work and try to do some good there.

  10. Mitch Crane says:

Sorry for that. I let someone else use my computer and she commented on DL, and I didn’t correct the name.

  11. Gymrat says:

Well I may be an “old Troll” but I don’t put words in peoples mouths. Not one word of the paragraph below did I say or even indicate:

“Thanks El Som. Gymrat’s comments amused me because his political positions are “Old Sussex” in that he wants Democratic candidates to “look like Republicans” and harks back to the great days when Sussex elected such great Dems as Thurman Adams and Bob Venables. What I did say is that it makes sense to actually know your opponent not make up stuff about them.
So in the response we get a bunch of made up BS from a guy who is so clearly mean spirited and vindictive:)
By the way if we did not welcome folks that “moved here” we would not have Joe Biden PA , Tom Carper WV, or even Bert Carvel MD. You 2 should hang out you would not need to leave a seat for the truth,
    Cheers

  12. I see that the years you spent lodged in Karen Weldin Stewart’s anal orifice have done nothing to sharpen your intellect.

This stops now. You’ve been banned before. Move on to something else or lose your platform. Your choice.
