Erik Raser-Schramm to Run for Chair of Del Dems

Filed in National by on March 26, 2017

It is clearly a big upgrade. Raser-Schramm brings a lot of energy and the proven ability to win elections. I hope it also means that the Democratic brand comes into sharper focus. For too long Democratic politicians have used LGBTQ friendliness as a fig leaf to cover their Republican, trickle down economic sensibilities. It is time that being a Democrat means more that being someone who is comfortable using gays as window dressing.

This is Sarah McBride on that topic:

Visited Erik Raser-Schramm at his farm and am thrilled to hear that he is running for chair of the Delaware Democratic Party! I met Erik more than ten years ago when I first started volunteering in politics. Erik has dedicated his life to Democratic campaigns and progressive causes and will breathe new life into the state party. What an exciting development that will help transform the party, invigorate our politics, and help move Delaware forward!

  1. Erik is as inclusive as they come. Not only won’t progressives be dismissed as not being ‘team players’, but they will be recruited.

The guy knows grassroots politics, and he is probably the best D political operative we have.

There is literally no one I’d rather have as Party Chair.

  2. Jason330 says:

Well… Awesome. You can’t get a more ringing endorsement than that.

  3. RE Vanella says:

I try to keep myself at least three arm’s lengths from anything labeled D. Madison warned explicitly against faction and all evidence compiled over the 230 years since seems to indicate he was correct.

Everything I hear about E.R-S. is agreeable. Every time his name comes up he’s doing something I agree with.

finally some good news. Best of luck to Erik and his team. Smart, progressive, principled and stubborn. Exactly what Delaware needs right now.

  5. Bane says:

Who is his team though? If Erik just replaces Daniello, but you have the same leadership everywhere else… what’s the point?

  6. jason330 says:

The one I’ve heard of so far is a good pick.

  7. SussexAnon says:

Erik is a great guy and I hope he gets the job.

I hope he will spend time in Sussex trying to win. Somewhere.

  8. Delaware Left says:

Anyone but Daniello and his spawn is an upgrade, but at the end of the day, he’s still a lobbyist and consultant, not the best jobs for a party chair to hold

  9. bane says:

But what if you’re a lobbyist for great causes like Equality Delaware and small businesses? This blind anti-consultant thing on the left is getting creepy

  10. RE Vanella says:

I take your point as far as it goes, but what’s “creepy” about wanting political leaders to be advocates for the citizens rather than this or that faction? Just because they seem like good factions…

  11. Bane says:

But why this position only?? What about lawyers? Business people? Union members? People who work for heavily regulated companies and state institutions like Dupont and the University of Delaware?

But someone with their own LLC representing causes of their choice is problematic? I really feel like the causes you represent should be the determining factor, not the job title.

  12. RE Vanella says:

Agreed. It depends on what the candidate did and for whom. That’s why it’s important to care. This is not creepy.

I think we should be suspicious of all the activities you listed (lawyers and “business people” especially). Nobody is arguing that a particular list of jobs would be disqualifying. Some are more tainted than other and we should examine them all. Again, there’s nothing creepy about due diligence.

  13. JTF says:

Without being combative, is there something you could point us to that shows his position on taxes or medicaid or anything other than being pro LGBTQ? (which is great!) I haven’t seen it and am genuinely interested.

At least he ran a campaign against John Marino and didn’t give him money, which puts him at an advantage to some in curent state party leadership.

  14. Jason330 says:

Yeah. That is a worry. If you look at the Hansen campaign, it is a mixed bag. Some “right to work for less” real Dem sounding stuff, along with the typical “I’m fiscally conservative” homage to capital.

I do, howevere, know people who think that ER-S views people who want economic justice (E.g. Bernie Bros) as a legitimate constituency. That’s something.

  15. The thing about the Hansen campaign is that Erik was the guy everybody recognized as the best to run it. And he ran a great campaign. I have no doubt that the grassroots will not only be welcomed, but will play an integral role in the Party if Erik is the Chair.

  16. anon says:

Erik is energetic and is outstanding in anything he does, I have no doubt that he will be great as State Chair. Glen Schmiesing, his opponent, seems typical (I will leave it there).

As for Erik’s lobbying, his current clients are the Delaware ACLU, the Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence, and the Delaware Brewer’s Guild, all worthwhile causes!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bernie-sanders-progressives-medicare-for-all_us_58d6f5c1e4b03692bea68fd2 Does Erik support this? If not he is not a progressive. Need to know more about issues he supports or not.
