What have you done today (Jan 25th) to resist Trump? )

Filed in Delaware by on January 25, 2017

1) Sign the petition to demand release of his tax returns. It’s at 330,000 signatures and climbing.

2) Then call (or fax!) Carper and ask him to support Sen. Ron Wyden’s bill to require all sitting presidents and nominated presidential candidates to release their tax returns for the past three years.

Our goal today is straight outta 1992 – Ten faxes!

I filled out the form. Does this mean that I can tell Cassandra that I took action and she’ll approve of it as a form of action taking?

  2. nemski says:

    Not even good trolling.

  3. jason330 says:

    Yeah. Such weak trolling.

  4. Alby says:

I just want to make sure he has my name on his enemies list. Not the same as actual action, but hey, marching is hard on the legs.

  5. Ben says:

I love the idea of satellite marches. Not everyone can get to DC, and i feel like millions of people in dozens of locations around the country sends a stronger message than a single march that King Pig-fucker’s cronies in the MSM can ignore. You can already see CNN rolling over for belly rubs.

  6. Alby says:

@Ben: Agreed. But part of going to DC is putting ourselves in front of the cameras.

Remember the heavy coverage of that burning limousine on Friday? You know why it got so much coverage? Because it was right in front of the Washington Post building. Those close overhead shots were from cameramen who didn’t even have to take the elevator downstairs to cover it.

  7. Alby says:

There’s a march tomorrow in Philadelphia at 11 a.m. focusing on preserving the Affordable Care Act. Details:

    https://www.facebook.com/events/1499649786715157

Over 3,100 have signed up to attend so far. Exceeding the expected numbers is always a good way to get attention.

  8. Paula says:

    Today’s calls:
Carper: Thanked him for joining with Sen. Warren (now there’s an unlikely duo!) in sending a letter to the GSA requesting information on what the GSA is doing to resolve Prez Tiny Hand’s conflict of interest in the Old Post Office hotel (http://www.carper.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/pressreleases?ID=A159093F-E51B-4994-B8BF-1CABAA672835) and asking him to continue holding Prez Sticky Fingers and his cabinet nominees to strict ethical standards. To that end, urging him to support Sen. Wyden’s bill mentioned above. (Never one to pass up a good segue.)

Coons: Urging him to oppose nomination of Tom Price for Secy of HHS and to oppose efforts to dismantle the ACA.

LBR: Thanked her for voting no on H.R.7 (No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017). She has a vote tracker on her website, which makes this easy. (http://bluntrochester.house.gov/voterecord/)

Now I’m off to sign that petition.

  9. Jason330 says:

P- you should write this post.

  10. Bailey Brooks says:

What have you done in the past eight years to resist Barrack Obama?

  11. Alby says:

    See, they’re getting scared.

  12. Jason330 says:

Well… I’m sure all the freedom loving “live free or die” zealots from the Obama years are going to be on the barricades with us. Consistency .. values, integrity and all that.

  13. RE Vanella says:

Paula – You’re motivated and courageous. Tip of the spear. Point of parliamentary procedure, I second Jason’s nomination of Paula to be our daily legistlative activism coordinator.

And, yeah, they’re beginning to feel tightness in their anuses, clearly. That effete liberal trope is going to come in real handy when we want to employ the element of surprise.

Gil Scott Heron. Last lyric of Enough. We’re on to you, Bailey Brooks.

Resist today. Dream tonight about how you’ll resist tomorrow.

  14. Alby says:

The revolution will be televised, but it will be on social media first.

Huge crowd for the Queer Dance Party outside Loew’s Hotel last night. From the number of normally non-activist people I know who are going tomorrow, I suspect the current estimate of 3,000 will be exceeded.

  15. Paula says:

Well, here’s the thing — I stay up really late and don’t get up anywhere near the time y’all are writing your posts!
Nevertheless, here are two things for tomorrow (Thurs, Jan 26), which just broke today:

    (1) Write a letter (or call) our elected representatives in Congress and urge them to vocally oppose the executive order (leaked today) that will block resettlement of refugees.

From the Indivisible Guide Facebook page:
According to a leaked copy of the executive order that could still be changed before it is signed into effect, Trump is calling for: Blocking the resettlement of Syrian refugees; Suspending all refugee admissions for the next 120 days while it determines which counties pose a risk; Suspending visas for citizens of certain counties where it is deemed security screening is insufficient. A list of those countries is forthcoming; Cutting more than half the number of refugees admitted into the U.S. down to 50,000; Imposing a religious and ideological litmus test on those coming to this nation; Only giving religious minorities priority in refugee admissions – for example accepting Christian refugees from Syria but not Muslims.

CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) is calling on all members of Congress to oppose this executive order by making statements, writing dear colleague letters, and pushing the Administration, State Department, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice to oppose these discriminatory policies which Muslims are the sole targets of.
You can send the letter to your member on CAIR’s website:
    http://cqrcengage.com/cair/app/write-a-letter?0&engagementId=282013

This is Paula again: Or calling works, too (there should be plenty of news about this in the morning for more information). Here’s my take — Aside from this being antithetical to American values, many countries have offered asylum to interpreters and translators who worked with foreign armies in Afghanistan and Iraq and are now facing persecution. The US has such a program, which has been very slow to let people in, and now it seems these folks will be abandoned despite putting their own and their family’s lives at risk to help American forces. (There was an episode about this on This American Life not long ago.) Who is going to help us if this goes into effect? The executive order puts American soldiers, journalists, and diplomatic personnel at risk. (The organization Red T works on this issue.)

    (2) Regarding H.R.7 — from The 65: We’re His Problem Now page on FB:
BREAKING – Please contact your Senators and tell them to vote NO on HR.7, an assault on abortion rights. Get your scripts at http://thesixtyfive.org/theIssues.
More info about the bill: https://www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/newsroom/press-releases/planned-parenthood-condemns-house-move-to-eliminate-abortion-coverage
Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester voted against the bill. I sure hope Senators Carper and Coons are planning to vote against it, but some positive reinforcement couldn’t hurt.

    And (3)
If you’re on Facebook, like @indivisibleguide and @thesixtyfive, and you won’t need me to dish up to-do lists.

What I need help with is issues of state import. I would be happy to add a call to Gov. Carney to my daily (more like thrice-weekly) call list, and it would be cool if we could do it in a concerted manner. For instance, could we ask for a pledge to keep the Medicaid extension and the healthcare exchange no matter what happens with the ACA repeal? Could we ask Carney to make Wilmington and Dover sanctuary cities? I don’t care anymore what is realistic or not. I think I’ve finally gotten over the need to be reasonable.

Keep doing this “What have you done today” and I’ll chime in where I can. Misery loves company!

  16. Paula says:

@Alby — thanks for the link. Hope the demonstration Thursday is a success!

  17. Paula: You don’t move the Overton Window back in our direction by being reasonable.

You are performing a tremendous public service here. What you are doing is what needs to be done, and we need to band together to rise up and force action.

I’m sure I speak for DL when I say we’d love to have you as a contributor. But you’re ALREADY making a contribution.

  18. Elaine Smith says:

Paula- from a longtime lurker, thank you for the direction.

  19. Ben says:

Is anyone else having trouble getting Carper’s wilmo office? it’ll ring, then silence.

Also, The White House comment line has been shut down. President Pig fucker is too much of a coward to be reached.
I recommend calling his 2-bit tacky shag-shacks instead. He still is the owner of those companies, so it is relevant. Here’s the phone number for the Events office in NY 212-715-7290.
Remember, the person who answers the phone is an underpaid American who probably doesn’t have much job mobility, so be kind, just make sure the message gets through

  20. RE Vanella says:

Ben – Your note reminded me. Carper’s Wilmington office is in the lobby of the building next to my office. So I strolled over for a personal visit…

Met a staff assistant called Ms Cameron. Very cordial conversation. To paraphrase:

I said that I understood that the Senator isn’t a firebrand. He’s a moderate politician. That’s fine as far as it goes. Because I work on the block I can come in everyday and urge Mr Carper to take this or that specific action if that’s what’s required. (I did note that basically every cabinet nominee is a disaster and HR7 must be fought in the Senate.) But honestly the Senator knows what’s up. I see no need to play these games. I know it may not be in his nature but he needs to stand up publically, now, and fight this retreat into the dark ages.

Resist in any way you are able, in any place, everyday.

  21. RE Vanella says:

She also suggested I read his latest statements on carper.senate.gov

I have to say, although I admit to grading timid Tom on a bit of a curve, these statement are relatively strongly worded. Particularly the one on EPA nominee Pruitt. Maybe he is going fight.

    Keep up the pressure….

  22. Ben says:

    well done!
I feel like the daily call list to our “democratic” senators/representatives must include pressure to help Stephanie Hansen. The Northern part of SD 10 is still lousy with Marino signs. yeah, yeah, yeah, yard signs dont vote…. and a shit-head like President pig-fucker could NEVER get elected.
