Ask DL: Where should liberals do their banking?

Filed in National by on January 23, 2017

This came in over the tip-line.

I live in the “currently” unhinged and Republican stronghold state of Texas but if the turnout for Saturday’s Women’s March is a barometer, hopefully we can change that sooner than later even with gerrymandering.

That said, I would like to move my deposited money from BOA, headquartered in one of the most politically regressive states in the country, at least in my opinion, to one that reflects Liberal values. If you have any information as to how anyone on your blog has searched for such a financial institution, would you kindly share?

Thanks for the consideration,

William in Austin

This is a question that comes up from time to time because I think we all recoil at the thought of propping up the very companies that are robbing America blind.

My gut reaction is to advise moving your money to a credit union. They are locally owned and not under the gun to make quarterly profit numbers. But there must be a bank that has a national ATMs network and isn’t straight up evil.

New Resources Bank is Bcorp certified, so that might be a contender. Similarly, Sunrise Bank out of St Paul Minnesoata is Bcorp approved.

Does anyone have any experiences with any of these? Any other recommendations.

I’ve been pretty pleased with USAA. They don’t have a local branch, but it has only been an issue when I pay for something and people give be gobs of cash to pay their part of the expense. I try not to do that.

It is ostensibly for the armed forces and their families. I sort of inherited them, as my wife was a member when we got married. They cover ATM expenses (with limits) and you can deposit checks via your phone.
