Carper, Carney, Hall-Long and Purzycki Absent from Women’s March

Filed in Delaware by on January 22, 2017

Update: I’m hearing that John Carney was at the DC Women’s March.

The following Delaware Democratic Party leaders were absent from the Women’s March on Saturday: Tom Carper, John Carney, Bethany Hall-Long, and Mike Purzycki. I’m sure their Delaware Way base are extremely happy.

Senator Carper: Last post on Facebook about Biden’s welcome home ceremony. Two tweets in support of the marches.

Governor Carney: Last post on Facebook about Biden’s welcome home ceremony. Last tweet that disgusting Bonini tweet.

Lt. Governor Bethany Hall-Long: Last post on Facebook about Biden’s welcome home ceremony. Last tweet about Biden’s welcome home ceremony.

Mayor Mike Purzycki: Last post on Facebook about Biden’s welcome home ceremony. Last tweet about Biden’s welcome home ceremony.

That said Senator Chris CoonsRepresentative Lisa Blunt Rochester, and New Castle County Executive Matt Meyers did attend.

If it does turn out that Carper, Carney, Hall-Long and Purzycki did attend, I’ll update this post, but the headline will remain as it would only show that their social media skills are horribly weak.

How out of touch can Carney be? I can honestly see him turfed out in a primary.

  2. nemski says:

It’s not like driving to Newark would have killed them. Know one was asking them to spend the entire day in DC.

  3. Jason330 says:

I don’t know how far he expects the “Republicans favorite Democrat” brand he is building will take him given the mood of the Democratic voters.

  4. puck says:

Are we seriously looking to Twitter and Facebook as the arena to hold Democrats accountable? At a minimum I expect a Democratic leader to speak at the march or at least show up for prominent photo-ops. Their social media accounts and contact lists should be used for organizing and sign-ups.

  5. nemski says:

No, I was looking to see if they were there only. As far as speeches, how many times do we have to listen to excuses from Carney and Carper. I’d rather hear from activists than our Republican leaders.

  6. Jason330 says:

There presence or absence at the marches reveals what these guys view as important. Clearly women’s issues and standing up against Trump are down on the list of priorities.

Not that any of that is surprising, although I’d have expected BHL to get over her fear of annoying Republicabs long enough to pay lip service to the march

  7. liberalgeek says:

I personally spoke to Bethany Hall-Long yesterday while she was knocking on doors in the 10th Senate District. There were hundreds of doors knocked on yesterday by Her, Earl Jaques, Dave Tackett, Harris McDowell, Nicole Poore and Kim Williams.

It is my understanding that the Hansen Campaign asked BHL to stay to knock on doors.

So here’s some base-level organizing: let me know when you want to volunteer to knock on some doors or make some phone calls. I’ll buy you a beer afterwards.

  8. Jason330 says:

I haven’t seen the Hansen video yet. Can I at least have a look at that befor I make up my mind about how passionate I’m going to be?

  9. mediawatch says:

Meanwhile, Hansen was at the Newark march and rally, where she gave a rousing speech and strong description of her credentials. In his talk at the rally, Meyer gave a powerful explanation of the importance of electing Hansen.

  10. nemski says:

I get it, Newark is pretty far away from SD10.

  11. anonymous says:

Some people have a low bar for “rousing.” The only passion I heard was her decades-old complaint about what she was paid as a gem appraiser.

  12. Jason330 says:

It is a great speech. Esp. The pay equity stuff. Im fired up to go to work for her

(Although we are still lost as a party when it comes to corporate influence, and was hoping for something from her in that.)

  13. liberalgeek says:

Honestly Nemski, what kind of idiot are you? BHL (and the rest of the people I listed) spent the 4 hours knocking on doors while the candidate and her campaign manager went to the rally. What part of campaigning don’t you understand?

  14. Delaware Left says:

going after BHL for campaigning in her home district to save the majority is pretty fucking laughable. Would be nice to see you out there once instead of trollish blogging

  15. liberalgeek says:

I’m sure Nemski and Mrs. Nemski had a nice stroll through the city yesterday. I’m glad they had their couple-time.

  16. nemski says:

I’m sure liberalgeek loves being a mouthpiece for the Delaware Democratic Party. Must be nice being a puppet.

  17. nemski says:

Hey liberalgeek, calling the Women’s March a stroll is nice though.

  18. Stewball says:

This headline needs to be changed. Horrible reporting and yes, there should be some reporting by bloggers before they accuse someone of skipping out on an event as important as the Women’s March. BHL was in her Senate district, campaign for Stephanie Hansen. Keeping a Democrat in that district will mean better access to health care for women, higher wages for working families, etc. BHL made the right choice.

  19. Jason330 says:

Winning this special is job one. I’m glad BHL is spending shoe leather. That’s her specialty.

As for the rest of us, we need to figure out how we can contribute. Being more liberal than thou is Low on my list.

  20. liberalgeek says:

Nemski – I haven’t defended anyone on this thread that I don’t personally know had something that they were specifically asked to do instead of the women’s march. You’re the smart-ass that thinks that if someone didn’t spend the day doing the same thing to improve the world as you, they must not be as pure as you.

Hypothetically, if you were scheduled to work yesterday, would you have been marching? I ask because BHL was asked to work by her candidate during the event yesterday.

But I bet you had a lot of fun yesterday, so there’s that.

  21. pandora says:

I hope to see a lot of you at this event on January 30th. There’s a lot of work to be done and not only one way of doing it.

  22. mediawatch says:

Anon — Perhaps my bar was set low. Frankly, I wasn’t expecting much from her, and she delivered more than I expected. Sorry I missed seeing you there.

  23. evolvde says:

Senator Coons rode one of the Delaware buses with his daughter to DC to attend the march. Not only did he attend, but he spent the entire day with actual Delawareans, and his daughter (!) to participate in what I hope will become an event remembered for a generation. I don’t always agree with him, but his presence meant a lot to me.

I assume no one could reanimate either Carney or Coons long enough to get them to a march or rally….

  24. anonymous says:

@MW: Because I was in Washington, doing something more important to me than shilling for someone I distrust and disrespect.

@Stewball: “Keeping a Democrat in that district will mean better access to health care for women, higher wages for working families, etc.”

Bullshit. Democrats could have done any of that — particularly the wages — at any time during the past 16 years. Where’s the evidence they’ll suddenly do it now? And none of the other things you list are endangered because the Senate goes to the Republicans, who still don’t have the House or the executive mansion.

All that said, I agree canvassing the district is more important for BHL, and giving the speech in Newark was important for Hansen.

I’m just not going to fork over my vote for less than progressivism any more. And I want the Democrats to hear that, loud and clear. I’m not going to sell something I wouldn’t buy.

  25. anon says:

Nemski, you look like an absolute fool on multiple levels for your post. That is all.

  26. anonymous says:

“It is a great speech. Esp. The pay equity stuff.”

No, it was a decent speech. A great speech uses examples of other women, preferably someone who lives in the district, and a great speaker doesn’t have to use notes for a speech that short.

Are your standards really so low that this counts as “great”?

  27. anonymous says:

“you look like an absolute fool on multiple levels for your post. That is all.”

If you can’t explain it, consider it unsaid.

  28. Prop Joe (Hawkeye) says:

Nice to see you guys haven’t changed much since the divorce

  29. donviti says:

so let me get this straight the woman that is our lt. Governor…(the first woman lt. Governor) is canvassing in a district while the person running for the seat itself is at the march?

And people are explaining it away like it’s nothing?

Maybe she could have done both? Probably would have been overlap at the March? 2 birds one stone? It’s a dumb call on her part to not attend.

  30. Ben says:

    I dont get the problem.
People who attended the march are the likeliest non-pigfuckers (my new word for republikkans) to vote. Anyone AT the march who lives in SD10 is probably now VERY likely to vote for Hansen…. and to urge their fellow SD10ers to vote for her (like im doing).
Meanwhile, the LT gov (who’s only point in her favor is not being a pig-fucker) is showing her independence from the fake Dem Gov, but not allowing the senate (and any hope of progressive legislation) to slip away.
I bit the bullet and stood “with her” despite my bottomless distrust and contempt for neo-liberalism. Republicans are pure evil. Whining about a not-progressive enough while the Klan-old-party still exists (much less is in total power) only gives aid to the enemy. Buck up, elect Hansen, and continue the fight.

  31. Jason330 says:

Ben, it is just a couple of morons trying to stir up shit, trolling a couple of other people who are easily trolled.

  32. Folks, a lot of the people at that rally were likely from, say Kowalko’s district. Right? You DO know that there are 6 ED’s from Kowalko’s district in the 10th, right?

I’m clearly not Hansen’s biggest supporter, but people objecting to her being at the March are missing the point. There had to be a lot of people from the 10th there and, if she was also able to get some volunteers and $$’s, I think she was right where she belonged. Plus, being at the March made a clear statement.

    It was a smart move.
