Playing It Safe on the Road Well Traveled

Filed in Delaware by on January 19, 2017

We all knew how it was going to play out — this is Delaware after all. Our politicians are raised to find the center path all the time, thinking bi-partisanship is king. But the king is dead, the king has been dead a long time.

Delaware politicians are the middle managers of US politics. They got to where they are by agreeing with the status quo, not by making bold choices. They use words like process, substance, and respect. But in the end, they always want to play it safe. They lack the determination to do the right thing.

I’m disappointed in Delaware politicians because it’s obvious they haven’t even been paying attention for the last eight years. I am disappointed in myself because I let myself think this time it was going to be different. It’s like I have not been paying attention over the last 30 years.

I agree. When the safe choice is to bluster, from deep within a pack of blusterers, against Trump and his gross malfeasance they will bluster, and then only after it has been safe to do so for 8 months.

Corporatists are of the right, no matter what their position on social issues. Delaware politicians are center-right, not center. Calling it the “center” is only playing into Republican hands, and keeping all Delaware politicians to the right of center.

As Republicans push ever-rightward, you have to keep running to the right to remain in the “center.” The center should be defined in absolute political terms, not in relative terms based on whatever Republican extremists are doing.
