GOP takes first mover advantage: Picks Marino for Upcoming Special

Filed in National by on December 12, 2016

SENATEMarino’s 49% against BHL probably overstates his strength a bit because a few of those percentage points can be attributed to the late breaking sign theft scandal. Still, someone running a follow-up race is typically tougher to beat than a pure newbie.

Republicans Choose Marino for Upcoming Special Election:
Middletown Republican Won 49% Of The Vote in 2014

Newark, DE: The Republican Party of Delaware announced today that they have selected John Marino of Middletown as the party’s candidate for the upcoming special election to replace Lt. Gov.-elect Bethany Hall-Long in the State Senate.

John Marino is a highly-decorated retired police officer, and is currently President of J & J Homes, LLC and a top-producing Realtor®. John has been an active volunteer in the New Castle County community for many years: as the former President of Lea Eara Farms/Summit Farms Maintenance Corporation, a volunteer position which he held for ten years; as a longtime volunteer at a horse rescue; as a Little League Coach at MOT Little League, winning the State tournament and taking his team to the regional championship; as well as a past volunteer for the Appoquinimink Sports Boosters.

Marino has lived for the last 20 years in the Middletown area with JoiAnn, his wife of 25 years, and their three children.

“I am honored that the Republican Party has selected our team for this important challenge,” said Marino. “I look forward to spreading my message of reforming and improving our government to the great people of the 10th District. Delaware deserves much better than we’ve been getting from our state government, and I have a plan to get the results Delawareans deserve.”

State GOP Chairman Charlie Copeland noted Marino’s campaign experience, in particular his 2014 campaign against Hall-Long, where Marino earned 49% of the vote and fell short by a narrow margin.

“John Marino knows how to run a top-flight campaign and earn the votes of the people of the 10th District,” said Delaware GOP Chairman Charlie Copeland. “And the people of the 10th District can see that one-party rule has failed our schools, our government and our economy. We look forward to a fantastic campaign.”

Should Marino be successful, the Delaware Senate would change power for the first time in over 40 years. The Senate will be evenly split between the Democrats and the Republicans following Hall-Long’s inauguration.

“The Senate Republicans have been offering consistent solutions for years, only to be shut down entirely by the ruling Democrats,” said Senate Minority Whip Greg Lavelle (R-Sharpley). “We’re ready to win this race and show Delaware that balanced government can make a lasting difference for them. John Marino is exactly the right person to win this race and serve the people of the 10th District in the State Senate.”

The election will be called following the resignation of Lt. Gov.-elect Hall-Long from the Senate.

Boy, oh boy… If the Dems lose this seat, how much fun is it going to be for Bethany to get to preside over a GOP-controlled Senate that only got that way because she wanted to move to a different desk and maybe have a different gig in 2025!

  2. mediawatch says:

So, what’s the big deal? We’ve got Mr. Bipartisan as governor. He ought to love it.

  3. Steve Newton says:

If Jaques is the Dem, I’m curious as to the impact of his stands on public education over the past 2-3 years and how they will affect his chances. Certainly can’t see DSEA going all out for him, and I see a potential loss of support there because BHL wasn’t really affected by those controversies. I’m curious to see what Mike, Brian, of Kevin thinks about that.

The Delaware Senate will not “change power,” as the L.G. presides over it and is a Democrat.

  5. liberalgeek says:

If Marino wins, the Republicans would have a majority in the senate. In the interim, the LG will break any ties.

Just what we need, another former police officer.

As a builder, I am sure he hired only legal workers to build homes in Delaware.

Just like there are no straight houseboys in Miami’s South Beach, there are no English-only construction sites in Delaware.

It is Republican style factish truthyness come to Delaware. Where is Celia when you need her?

  8. chris says:

The Dems are looking at a strong female candidate. They know Jacques can’t win in there…plus he will have bad votes in House that can be used against him.

  9. Jason330 says:

That reminds me… I am going to enjoy all the concern trolling.

  10. Jaques told me two weeks ago he is NOT running. I’m hearing two possible choices for the Dems, both female.

  11. Tom Kline says:

This state is a shit hole. Things can only go up! (I hope).

  12. Well, that’s a change. Jaques, Quin Johnson (who votes like a Third Way D), and Clerk of the Peace Ken Boulden were the names that had been previously floated.

Sometimes, when you have a lot of possibilities, it means that you don’t have one really good possibility.

  13. Prop Joe says:

If one of the names Kevin’s heard is the same as what I’ve heard (likely is), this individual has a pretty strong narrative that can be unfurled and provides, in several areas, a policy and professional contrast w/ Marino.

  14. You’re such a tease.

  15. liberalgeek says:

There are two women in the mix and at least three men. And yes, one of the women has vast experience in policy and campaigns.

  16. LG: How will the D’s make the selection? Since the Senate District takes in portions of four RD’s, will the RD’s get together to vote? Would it be proportional based on number of registered voters per RD? Any idea when they’ll meet?

  17. liberalgeek says:

When the vote happens, any committee members that live in the senate district will have a vote. I am not at liberty to say when the vote will be held.

I suspect that by Thursday there will be more details coming out.

  18. Josh W says:

There’s going to be an informational meeting at the New Castle DelDems headquarters where I believe the selection process is going to be explained. I think anyone who is a Democrat can (and should) go.

Jacques I hear is completely out and I’ve heard that a woman is the likely choice instead, and from the comments here, I think we’re all thinking about the same person.
