I don’t get your point. Progressives at large disdain fundraisers? Social gatherings? Tributes to retiring and defeated Senators? I know there are a lot of unpleasant curmudgeons who are progressives, but a lot of us progressives (speaking for myself) can schmooze with the best of them. So speak for yourself.

  2. Teofilo Burrell says:

Regular liberals cannot afford these fancy ass fundraisers. Only elite party people do!!!! Get the $$ out of it!!!

  3. Delaware Dem says:

Good point, though in my experience there is no class difference between progressives and your regular old Democrats (whether they be liberals or moderates). There are a lot of rich progressives out there.

  4. jason330 says:

Maybe my point is that there is stuff that needs doing (like this bullshit) that I (and perhaps others) have no interest in? I’m not sure, to be honest. But when I get stuff like this in my electronic mail inbox, I recoil in disgust.

  5. Stat says:

Cash bar on a Sunday morning…woohoo

  6. My fave part?:

“Congressman John Carney is appearing at this event only as a guest speaker. Congressman Carney is not asking for funds or donations.”

    What a great guy!

  7. RE Vanella says:

My biggest concern is not that this is a stupid event. It is. But the fact that DD and the like don’t understand why is far more troubling.

At least it’s in a Union Hall. In other ten or so years people will forget what those were.

  8. ex-anonymous says:

i wouldn’t go to this if they paid me the $100. but it seems petty to resent the event. there are lots of terrible things going on that are much more deserving of your wrath.

  9. cassandra_m says:

Part of the point of this fundraiser is to raise funds for the Special Election. These efforts don’t pay for themselves, you know.

  10. Delaware Dem says:

RE Vanella… you understand that to win elections, we have to raise money, yes? If you are not willing to raise money to elect candidates and instead insist on attacking others for raising money, then you are fucking useless to everyone.

  11. So let’s make Blevins and Peterson cash cows one last time.

I’m sure that’s how Karen wanted to go out. I appreciate what Peterson and Blevins have done, I want to express my thanks. But I don’t want a single dollar of mine to go to this Third Way organization which pretends to be the Democratic Party. That’s why my donations now all go to individual candidates.

BTW, nowhere does it say that this is a fundraiser for the Special Election. Just be honest about it, or…have BHL host the event since it’s her seat that will be up for grabs.

  12. Delaware Dem says:

Curmudgeon leftists are so much fun.

  13. RE Vanella says:

Thanks for letting me know. I had no idea. You have so much to teach me.

  14. Anon says:

What’s ur point Jason?? This doesn’t make sense and now you have crossed into I’ll object to everything for the sake of objecting. I typically have given you a pass b/c you’re a progressive but for god sakes get some credible content before you post it.

We love this blog and you’re posts are piss poor at best.

BTW since Carney is a US Congressman they have to state that when he appears at state fundraisers not intended to raise money for him.

    Unsubscribe to the emails!

    I wish Cecilia was back!!

  15. What’s more credible than original source material?

  16. jason330 says:

I wish Cecilia was back too, and I’m fairly sure our wishes will be granted in the fullness of time.

While we wait, I’ll let in on my point which I think is obvious, but perhaps not.

Maybe progressive will never take over the Democratic party because taking over and running a party requires tasks I have no interest in and a skill set I don’t think I have. Maybe other progressives are like me, and they feel likewise. Maybe not, and I am on my own on this one. It would not be the first time.

    Okay?

  17. Delaware Dem says:

I think you have hit the nail on the fucking head. And I am saying the following in all sincerity and not out of sarcasm. Building a successful party coalition that wins requires many many many undesirable tasks to be performed. It requires the horror of fundraising. It requires going out to repetitive rubber chicken dinners in your local fire or union halls. It requires lauding your fellow public officials in your party in fundraising rubber chicken dinners/receptions, etc.

I hate fundraising. I literally hate making fundraising calls or even canvassing calls, let alone actual in person canvassing. Cheers to those that love it. I hate the dinners, the receptions too. But you do it to make contacts. To network. If you are committed to the party either to change it or to see it succeed or both, you have to do it. So you have to compromise with yourself and do it. The problem some progressives have is they won’t do the dirty work of party coalition building. Successful Progressives like Paul Baumbach and Bryan Townsend and Karen Peterson do. That was how they won their elections, by going door to door, by going to every Civic Association meeting and fire hall chicken dinner.

So Jason, you don’t like these receptions. That’s fine. You can make your contributions to the cause in other ways. One way you are doing it is through your writing here at DL. It’s what I do. I write. I write checks too. And I attend these receptions and meetings on occasion when my schedule permits. But my objection is knocking it generally. Receptions like these, fundraising like this, is all part of the larger party building puzzle.

  18. liberalgeek says:

As Cassandra said, this is a fundraiser to refill coffers in anticipation of a huge influx of cash expected from national Republicans. Why would you be pissy about that?

  19. Jason330 says:

I’m not against it. I’m just against me going to it.

  20. liberalgeek says:

Then WTF is this post even about? There are going to be plenty of progressives there, probably interacting with potential candidates for the special election. Would you feel better if the contribution was $27?

  21. hmm says:

El Som, the Carney language is required because of the difference in federal and state election laws and regulations. But kudos to working it into your narrative.

Also the fundraiser is for the county committee, not for a candidate committee so they can’t say it’s explicitly for any one activity. None of this is scandalous just normal logistics.

  22. Jason330 says:

“Then WTF is this post even about?”

Holy shit. For one thing, I was spreading the word in my own puckish way. For another thing, see my comment from 11:30.

  23. chris says:

Would be nicer if they raised the money for the Food Bank or Emmanual Dining Room or Cancer Care Connection –something charitable…

  24. Jason330 says:

Nicer, perhaps. But not helpful when you need money (and a decent populist message that isn’t watered down due to being beholden to the financial industry) to beat Republicans.

  25. MarcoPolo says:

Yeah, this post pretty much sums up the completely ineffectiveness of the far left movement. “I want stuff to happen but I don’t want to do any work.”

See also: Remember that Women’s March the day after the inauguration? Well it’s a complete shit show because they didn’t realize you can’t gather on the National Mall, Pennsylvania Avenue or by any of the monuments for the whole week after the election. And…that’s not a Trump thing…it’s a National Park Service rule. They have to take down all of the inauguration constructed stuff, so the whole thing is a construction zone. Another massive failure by lazy progressives.

See Also: Remember that Jill Stein Green Party “recount” cash grab? Everyone see how they pulled out of the recount in Pennsylvania? Everyone who contributed to that–congratulations, the Green Party is going to walk away with millions to fund their next spoiler campaign.

  26. Jason330 says:

I have to admit that the first point was pretty valid. Although I don’t know if the post is an indictment of the whole “far left movement” or just of me. I think just me based on the other responses.

    I can’t speak to point 2 or 3.

  27. SussexAonon says:

…..because $100 per person just SCREAMS, “no we really are for the common working person and not for the rich.”

  28. jason330 says:

Not only that, $100 is a laughable pittance for the party’s real donor base.

This is really some kind of sick joke. Allow some deluded goofballs to feel like they are playing a part, when in reality, John Carney, Chris Coons and Tom Carper know full well who they are working for.
