Paging 2016 MVP Nominees!

Yes, time to honor those who most contributed to the progressive cause in Delaware in 2016.  It was a real tough year, but there were some distinct bright lights, including longtime stalwarts and intriguing newcomers.

While I, of course, have some ideas, I fully expect many of those on the final list, and the order, to come directly from you.

The rules are simple.  Make your suggestions, and explain why they deserve mention.  Keep in mind that individuals or groups are welcome as are those who aren’t progressive, but somehow contributed to the progressive cause.  For example, Christine O’Donnell won this award the year she took out Mike Castle.

I’m also hoping that this may serve as a catharsis to get us all feeling more optimistic about the future and to inspire us to redouble our efforts.  After all, marching isn’t just important, but it’s a great way to lose weight.

  1. Steve Newton says:

Democratic primary voters … for finally dumping Karen Weldin Stewart.

  2. AAuen says:

Karen Peterson for her decades of work for the many minority groups in Delaware

Mike Matthews for his continued work in education and keeping legislators honest

Kevin Ohlandt for much of the above reason

Mitch Crane for his many, many years of fighting the good fight in Sussex. He’s put up amazing candidates like Paulette Rappa, Charlie Kosky, and Brad Connors

  3. Calvin Sparks says:

AAuen hit the nail on the head. Great list!

  4. SussexWatcher says:

Matt Meyer, for standing up when no one else in the county would and explicitly running against sleaze and corruption and the Gordon Way.

  5. cassandra_m says:

Eugene Young — took on the entrenched politics of the City of Wilmington to run for Mayor. He advocated and kept solid progressive ideas at the forefront of his campaign and ran the most grass roots campaign the city ever saw. Eugene overcame all of the objections to his candidacy — name recognition, money, not your turn to get the News Journal’s endorsement. It isn’t everyday that the NJ endorses a solid progressive. He came within 234 votes of winning and is still out in the city organizing for change.

  6. Prop Joe says:

Sarah McBride… Hard to find a more fierce advocate for equality and rights. Her presence as a lead national spokesperson for LGBTQ rights makes this Delawarean deeply, deeply proud!

  7. AQC says:

Joe Biden. Because, he’s Joe Biden.

  8. Delaware Dem says:

Meyer and Young are locks for co-MVPs

  9. chris says:

    Bernie Sanders.
A prophet was without honor in a rigged DNC under disgraced former Chair Debbie Wasserman- Schultz.

  10. Bane says:

    Pete Schwartzkopf
    Tom Carper
    Colin Bonini

  11. AAuen says:

I totally second Sarah McBride and would add the democratic candidates of 2016 for standing up to Daniello when he sent the letter telling primary candidates to drop out

  12. Josh W says:

This is probably cheating because because I just recently joined their ranks, but I think Delaware United deserves a nom. They worked hard all across Delaware, campaigning, door knocking, and phone banking for tons of progressive candidates. Matt Meyer has even given credit to them for his victory over Gordon.

  13. Capesdelaware says:

Charlie Koskey and Mitch Crane .

  14. anon says:

    Don Peterson
    Matt Meyer
    Karen Peterson

  15. Emma says:

The number 1 barrier to advancing a progressive agenda in DE is Pete Schwartzkopf. So Don Peterson should get an MVP award for being the first progressive to have the courage to challenge him. Mikki Snyder-Hall should get MVP for running his campaign. And I would also nominate Dustyn Thompson for founding DE United.

I can’t see how someone who worked to get Pete reelected could be MVP, especially a person who actively pulled strings to hurt Don’s chances in the 14RD, Sussex Dems, and Stonewall. Thus Mitch Crane should not be MVP, even though he did work hard for the party in Sussex.

  16. Dustyn says:

I have met some amazing people this year, mostly in part due to Delaware United. Everyone who has helped out with that, I cannot say enough about them. They are by far some of the best people I have ever known.

All the candidates we worked with were worthy of note here but three have stuck around, despite losing and one has even started a great grassroots organization to keep fighting in Delaware for the progressive agenda, and still others have remained vocal. So, I would have to nominate Eugene young, don peterson, and Sherry Dorsey walker.

As far as my nomination from Emma, thank you so much. However, I have to stick with bernie on this one: not me, us. DU is only as good as its members and this team is by far the most progressive, productive, and open hearted that I have ever worked with.

  17. Scion says:

Frank Knotts of Delaware Right for diabolically and systematically dividing and undermining the Delaware GOP.
