Coons Statement Predictably Underwhelms

Filed in National by on November 10, 2016

Nobody can know what a Trump Presidency means for America and be okay with it, unless your name is Senator Chris Coons.

Dear Jason330,

I have heard from many friends and family who are upset and concerned about what the results of this election mean for our country. While I understand those concerns, I have faith in the fundamental strength of our democracy and our collective will to move forward together.

Sometimes our commitment to democracy demands of us hard things. We need to acknowledge and address the change many voters want, even if we disagree with the chosen route. We all recognize the need to find a shared path forward despite real and deep differences. Our country has done this many times before, and each time we have emerged stronger.
I am proud to represent a state that last night elected new and promising leaders for state and local office as well as to Congress. I will do my best to continue to represent the values and ideas of my state and community in Washington. I also remain grateful to Secretary Clinton for her decades of service to our country. Her campaign’s central message that we are stronger together resonated with millions of people, and I believe it remains true today.

Last night President-elect Trump spoke about bringing America together, supporting veterans, and rebuilding infrastructure — priorities and values I share. It is my hope that he will seek to govern in a way that will address our national challenges and actually move us forward. If he is willing to do so, I will do my best to work with him and the Republican majority in the Congress.

President-elect Trump also said some outrageous and frightening things on the campaign trail, including proposals that would violate our core national values and our Constitution. To the extent he tries to move forward on those ideas, I will work tirelessly in opposition.

I will need your help, your input, your advice, and your encouragement as I do my best to reflect my community, honor our values, and defend our Constitution. It is my hope that we will find a way forward together.

Yours,
Chris

As the utter shock of this election wears off I am coming around to the realization that constant, disciplined, principled opposition to Trump is the only legitimate course for Democrats. “President Trump” can not be allowed to walk away from the disaster that is about to unfold. Democrats Coons, Carper and Rochester cannot give this Presidency bipartisan cover as if he is just another Republican.

Near the end, there is a slight nod in the direction of integrity, but overall this statement from Coons bodes nothing but ill for the country.

Not My President says it all for me. As for Coons…. well, he’s not what we wanted either.

  2. Prop Joe says:

His statement is fundamentally the same as the ones issued by the Jesus and Mary of Progressive Dems (Bernie & Warren). They said the same (willing to work with; will vigilantly oppose), so let’s cut him a tad bit of slack on this specific point.

Do I trust that Dems such as Coons and Carper will adopt a “vigilant, principled opposition” to the coming onslaught of offensive executive/legislative measures and actions? Nope.

Sometimes a press release is just a press release.

Huh? You agree with the point of the post, just not the post?

Coons arguably helped Trump to victory with his deciding vote against Obama appointee Debo Adegbile as chief of the DOJ Civil Rights Division. One lesson from this election is that voter suppression works. Sure didn’t help that after Coons tanked Debo, the Civil Rights Division was hamstrung, without permanent leadership, for the two years leading into this election.

Yeah. I forgot about that. Great fucking work Coons!

I think Trump will probably be a good surprise. I think we need to be very careful and watch him though, to see that he doesn’t catch us off guard and surprise us. I think Donald Trump will be very good for people who make flags for a living, though I don’t think the life of a flag will be extended very long under a Trump presidency. I think women especially should keep a close eye and have very much to fear but should love him and not be afraid for him as their president because he will make them great, he has promised. I think financial markets will do well except for those moments his surprise decisions make them do horribly. I think Hispanics will thrive and prosper as long as they don’t come into contact with any white supremacists. I think blacks will love Donald Trump for all the good he will do their cities, as long as they are able to stay out of his concentration camps where they will be redoctrinated into giving their labor for free. I think America has a chance to hope again, to look forward to the brightest future it has ever seen, but should try opening its eyes first before venturing out into the sun… I can say with solidarity, and with distinct wavering, that I learned everything about talking out of both sides by our former Congressman Mike Castle. I miss those days now.

So…..does he support term limits for congress? a 5 year ban on congressmen working as lobbyists? An outright ban on congressmen becoming lobbyists for foreign interests?

Because Trump wants to do that first thing on day one. It is on the top of his list.

McConnell has already said no to term limits yesterday. Other republicans are struggling to say anything about the infrastructure plans. But they all know the answer to Obamacare.

Not great that Coons called the President-elect (paraphrased) a Cheeto faced scam artist . Its on the record! Real classy move.

Do we need to bring up the list of “real classy moves” from the President elect?
