Colin Bonini Donald Trump Rob Tornoe cartoon

It’s hard to imagine the real Colin Bonini as the “Trump Mini-Me” he’s playing on the stump, which is why I drew him in my cartoon trying furiously trying to wash away the stench left by supporting the race-baiting candidate. But if he is just cynically playing to the most racist base of his supporters here in Delaware, he’s doing a convincing job.

Why is this hard to imagine? The GOP has been in dog-whistle race baiting mode for years — the Trump innovation is to stop whistling. If this kind of thing has been key to the communication your party does to fire up its base, of course he is comfortable with it. It isn’t as though he has taken up leadership opposed to any of the GOPs excesses — why would he start now?

I will say that this is not at all a winning strategy for Bonini for Governor, but will play pretty well in his Senate District. I’m pretty sick of him, since he is my Senator. He never does anything for his District and often doesn’t show up for votes, committees, etc. I actually think that is a good thing, because of his extreme views. However, there are enough Democrats in his District and maybe moderate Independents that should be appalled by his lack of participation in doing his duty – – if they voted in force. Actually, those voting for him should be most disturbed by this lack of effort and shirking his responsibilities.
