Celia Cohen puff piece on Carney/BHL contains one nugget of genuine info

Filed in National by on October 17, 2016

I had heard that Ken Boulden was looking at the empty RD seat Earl Jaques would create by moving up to BHL’s vacated senate seat. But Celia says it is down to Jaques or Boulden v. some GOP tomato can for the SD seat.

The confidence was so high, the intrigue was already thick at Hall-Long’s fund-raiser over who could run in a special election to replace her in the state Senate, since she is midway through a four-year term. Two possibilities — Earl Jaques, a Democratic state representative, and Ken Boulden, the Democratic clerk of the peace in New Castle County — conspicuously attended.

    Poor Daniello. All these primaries!!

  2. Jason330 says:

I’m not sure how a primary for a Special would even work. it may be a star chamber primary with just a half-dozen worthies making the call.

  3. liberalgeek says:

No primary. There will be a caucus of all eligible committee members (people in BHL’s SD). Those people will select the candidate. One evening, one vote, done.

  4. Mitch Crane says:

Liberalgeek is correct. Candidates for special elections are selected by a caucus of committee members in the district. Another wrench in the works is the fact that RD committees will be undergoing their quadrennial reorganizations in January. These are caucuses of registered Democrats ( I do not know how the other parties organize) in each representative district. At the caucus they elect new committee people and RD committee officers.

  5. doverdem says:

Hope they don’t pick Jaques. Nothing against the guy, but I can’t imagine lazy democrats getting out in numbers for one special, let alone two

  6. Jason330 says:

Since it is a star chamber primary, Jaques must be considered the prohibitive favorite.

  7. liberalgeek says:

FWIW, all registered Democrats are eligible to attend the “star chamber primary”.

  8. Jason330 says:

My esteemed colleague uses scare quotes as if I mean to use “star chamber” as a pejoritive term. I, for one, appreciate the wisdom of my Party overlords.

I’m just saying that nobody is going to be beating the bushes to let everyone know that “all eligible committee members” is the same as “all registered Democrats”

  9. liberalgeek says:

They are not the same. If you are not a committee member, you can watch and listen to the candidates as they make their case. Then you would have to watch as eligible committee members complete their ballots.

  10. Jason330 says:

Thanks for the clarification. I’ll pass. I have faith in the star chamber.
