Something I Learned Today: Friday, Oct. 14

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on October 14, 2016

Need advice on your next wine purchase? Today I learned that, in the future, electronic tongues may well help guide you:

The ‘tongue’ is made of gold, platinum and carbon electrodes, and measures the electro-chemical signals of sugars, phenolics and other compounds present in wine, according to its designers.

They added that it might even be developed to help predict scores from critics.

That’s all well and good. But will the tongue be able to craft winespeak like this?:

“The 1999 Merlot from Machiavelli Vineyards incorporates burnt sauerkraut overtones with a mildewed Cool Whip bouquet.”  Or:

Owl River Winery brings us raucous ketchup undertones and a scintillating spearmint essence in their 2005 Zinfandel.

You like those? Craft your own review at Wine Review Generator.    A website that I just found today.

Proof that you’re never too old to learn.  Until next time…

Who just completely debunked the entire idea that wine critics make any coherent sense whatsoever? Someone did so recently.

That said, I for one, welcome our robot tongue masters.

  2. Here’s a real good article that claims that wine tasting is ‘junk science’. Including experiments to prove it (I disagree, but I’m something of a wine snob).:

  3. This is a real wine review that I read today:

“Extremely precise tensile acidity with gunflint, soy, vanilla, dry and lean citrus and pear fruit and just a faint note of eucalyptus leaf.

The bead and texture is also fine and pure leading to a terrifically long finish. This will certainly age for 25 years plus and shouldn’t really be broached for another five.”
